Photography Tips for Moms23 Apr 2007 05:00 am

This was our first full weekend home in a while. Pascaline and I were so excited b/c it was also the annual YMCA “Run for Kids” race. Last year she did the kid’s race. It was a mile long and at the end she was mad b/c she wanted to keep racing. So this year, I signed her up to join me for the 5K adult race. Oh boy! :)

Let’s just say she was a bit of a yo-yo. One minute she was unsure of the whole thing and then next minute she was rearing to go. We put glitter all over our face and hands and named ourselves the “Glitter Girls”.

Pascaline wanted to line up at the front of the starting line to have a better chance at beating everyone. Can you see us in the middle? :)

The clock started, and we were off! The first half mile she was doing AWESOME!

But then someone on the sidelines cheered for her number, and she totally went into a tantrum b/c she thought they were making fun of her. People cheering was a totally new experience that overwhelmed her (and you can guess at how many cheered for her b/c of her size :)). Every time someone yelled “Go 363!” Oh boy, we were in trouble. :)

At two miles into it, she wanted to give up. I’m so proud of Pascaline b/c on her own she decided to keep going and finish. At one point she even looked at me and said, “I thought you’d have to catch up with me the whole time mom, but instead you’ve had to slow down for me. I really appreciate you sticking with me.” (totally made me want to cry)

We walked half of the race, but at the end she decided to run again. Her dad was so proud! Brian said he was a little worried when I came home with our registration for a 5K, but then he saw us come around the corner and was so excited!

And Pascaline made it across the finish line at 44:57 minutes!

That’s my girl! A 5K for a 6 year old is a HUGE thing! And with all the meltdowns we went through I wasn’t sure if we’d be doing another one together. But to my surprise, she told me she can’t wait to do the next one with me! :)

Pascaline’s excited for this post, so if you have a free minute leave her a message!

To those of you that love our photo recipes and exercises, here they are!

For the shots of Pascaline and I pinning on her number, giving each other high fives, lining up at the start line, Brian had his shutter speed at 320. He kept his aperture at 2.8 and ISO at 100. He shot all these photos with the zoom lense.

But when we were running, Brian needed a fast shutter speed to shoot us in motion with us also being sharp and crisp instead of blurry. So his shutter speed went up to 640, aperture stayed 2.8, and his ISO stayed at 100. The key is the faster shutter speed for motion or action photos, like soccer games or kids riding their bikes. If your shutter speed is to slow, your child will be blurry.

Try experimenting with Shutter Speed!

1. Put your camera in TV mode (this is shutter speed priority where you determine the shutter speed and the camera decides the aperture for you).

2. Have your kids run around in the backyard. (tough one huh! :))

3. Take a couple photos at a slow shutter speed (maybe a 1/100). Then speed up your shutter speed to 1/600 and see what happens. Is the shot with the faster shutter speed more crisp than the first?

4. Remember, play around with your settings trying different things all the time. This is the fastest way to get a better understanding of your camera’s shutter speed, aperture and ISO!

Way to go Girls!! Pascaline, thats so awesome that you were able to finish your first 5K…that is such a huge accomplishment. I’m not sure that most of us reading this could finish, nevermind do it in 44:57. We’re very proud of you!!

  2. on 23 Apr 2007 at 5:34 am Leah

Oh my goodness! That is so awesome! I don’t think I could have done a race that long! You guys looked so great together and I am sure everyone is very proud of you Pascaline. You are a very special girl!

  3. on 23 Apr 2007 at 6:21 am Brandon

Wow! Good job, Pascaline! A 5K is a hard feat, but you made it! You should be so proud of yourself for keeping at it and deciding for yourself to finish the race. Many people would have just given up when they got tired, so that makes what you did extra special!

Go Glitter Girls!! What a wonderful race Pascaline! And it’s so cool that you did it for such a great cause. I can’t wait to see pictures of your next race!

To the incredible little Pascaline: Congratulations on such an accomplishment at such an early age! I am very impressed : ) When you saw the finish line did you feel like you could just sprint there because you were so excited? I used to be a runner and at every race I could run so fast at the end because I was SO excited to be almost finished : ) Can’t wait to meet you someday. Say hi to your mom for me!

Great Job Pascaline, you did a fabulous job. You set a goal, pushed forward and when it was hard you didn’t give up. You are going to go a long way in life.

(Good job to Mom too, it is hard not to give in and let them give up, what a great example you are )

WAY TO GO PASCALINE!!! I don’t think I could have run a 5K, and you did it! That’s awesome. I will have to see about signing myself and my 7 and 5 year old sons up for a family race like that for such a great cause. Thanks for inspiring me Me Ra and Pascaline!

    That’s my girl!!!
While the “Glitter Girls” ran their race, the “Hot Chocolate Boys” (Blaze and I) drank their cocoa and ate their doughnuts.

And we made really good time if I may say so myself…

  17. on 23 Apr 2007 at 1:03 pm Sharon

Pascaline! You rock!!! I read your mom’s blog all the time and this is one of my all time most favorite entries! Next year you should wear tiaras to go with your glitter! Way to go and hang in there when it got tough!

  18. on 23 Apr 2007 at 1:35 pm Jen

    Pascaline,
Not everyone can finish a 5k, and YOU did, you should be very proud of yourself. You did a great job! :)

  22. on 23 Apr 2007 at 10:44 pm grammie :)

That’s my beautiful Pacaline . . . running with the wind in your hair and a twinkle in your eyes! Did you and momma have fun telling stories while you ran, you have to tell grammie all about it!

MeRa you are such a wonderful mom - encouraging your children by showing them how to ‘break through the barriers’ and slowing down to lead them, not push them. You continue to be an inspiration to me!

Hey ‘glitter girls’, maybe next year grammie can join your run (you might have to slow down for me Pascaline)and Papa can have hot chocolate with the boys! I’m going to start training!!

Love you both ~ grammie (^;^)

  23. on 23 Apr 2007 at 10:55 pm Me Ra

    Pascaline you did sooooo awesome!

That’s nice that J Sandifer invited you to run in Maine. Jay is a great guy - but his tummy is not as big as your kitty cat’s. Now she really is a couch potatoe!

Maybe you should take her on your next run: )

PS. Tell your daddy that he did awesome on these special pictures!

  29. on 28 Apr 2007 at 6:57 pm Carla Ten Eyck

I ran my very first 5k last year and know how big that is for a 34 year old, nevermind for a little girl! How cool are you guys? Keep it up, you are inspiring me to register for my next race now! I may even do it with my little girl!

  30. on 03 May 2007 at 4:11 pm Shyla
