For those of you who missed this, I posted a couple weeks ago about my dear friend Jennifer.

From her blog, this is what happened:

Over this past weekend on July 8th, Jennifer was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a Leukemia called Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a fast-growing cancer of the white blood cells. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that the body uses to fight infections. In ALL, the bone marrow makes lots of unformed cells called blasts that normally would develop into lymphocytes. However, the blasts are abnormal. They do not develop and cannot fight infections. The number of abnormal cells (or leukemia cells) grows quickly. They crowd out the normal red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets the body needs.

I got to see Jennifer for a few hours on Saturday night. It was wonderful. We laughed, cried, and laughed some more. Her beautiful hair is all gone now, but she is more radiant than ever. I can’t believe how absolutely stunning she was! I got this image off her blog, isn’t she beautiful!

In the very near future, Jennifer needs a bone marrow transplant. She actually has a twin sister and two other siblings, and can you believe that all three were a match for each other but not for Jen? It’s unreal. Her sister Judy works at Fred Hutchinson where they search for DNA matches, another unreal thing, that her sister’s job is right in the midst of this search! She was telling me that Jennifer’s DNA is particularly tied to her ethnicity. Jen is half Mexican and half Korean and there is a trace of African American showing up in her.

Brian and I talked it over this weekend and decided to sign me up at www.marrow.org to see if I might be a match for her or someone else. Judy said the need for minority donors is so huge. My mom has Spanish in her and as you know my dad is Korean. I know it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, but we have to try and see if it’s possible. Brian and I are praying it is, if not me someone else very soon!

If you or someone you know has a similar ethnicity, I invite you to consider signing up at www.marrow.org and joining the register list. It’s a huge thing to ask, so please pray and think about it. There is a lot of good info on the website for what happens when you are a bone marrow donor.

But most of all, thank you for praying for Jen. She is doing incredibly well with what she’s facing. When I posted the blog on Jennifer a couple weeks ago, people emailed her from all over the world. You have no idea how much that meant to her. Keep the emails coming. And thanks for considering being a donor.

To email Jennifer, send to kate_stinson@hotmail.com.

To view her blog, visit Jennifer.

Tomorrow we are going to update you with what’s happening on the workshops and spaces left. We’re so excited to meet so many of you! And you’re coming from all over the country! It’s so fun! Brian and I have also committed 10% of the workshop proceeds to Jennifer’s recovery and needs. We wanted you to know that you are a part of something bigger than you realize!

Much love, Me Ra

Remember Monica and Ryan? Ducking into a Seattle coffee house as it started to rain on their wedding day?

Ready to see the rest? :)

But first, I have to say a couple things…

Monica, wins the official “most calm” bride I have ever known. She deserves a medal! If something could go wrong in all your wedding planning, it happened to Monica. From losing the place they’d booked, to having to change wedding dates months later at the last minute, to a day of surprises that I can’t even explain. And through it all, Monica just smiled and said to me, “All I care about is marrying Ryan today. Nothing else matters.” And then she smiled.

Capturing the joy in their love was a honor.

Without a doubt, I am a better person for knowing Monica and Ryan. As I witnessed first hand how they handled every challenge with ease and peace.

The cafe we stumbled into was perfect for the two of them! It was like a gift being given to these two despite the weather, the missing “go away” car, etc. :)

While I was shooting the couple, Brian caught some of me thinking you’d have fun seeing the shot from another angle!

Here’s one in the series that I was taking!

You can’t take a bad photo of these two. Their chemistry is gorgeous!

So without further delay, enjoy Monica and Ryan’s Slideshow!!! (And pay special attention to the bridesmaids photos. These girls were a kick! You’ll see what I mean! :) )

To all friends and family of Monica and Ryan, we are extending a $15 gift certificate to each of you! Monica, will let you know how to access it. Enjoy! It was a pleasure meeting all of you!

Monica, you know I absolutely adore, respect and love you! A big congrats to you and Ryan!

Love, Me Ra and Brian

Yesterday was OVERWHELMING with how many people signed up and all the emails we got! Brian and I feel so incredibly blessed! We can’t even tell you how fun it was to talk with you, email back and forth, and feeling all the excitement happen with so many of you! If you didn’t hear back from us yesterday, watch for my email today. There are still spots left, and we are so excited at how many filled yesterday and this morning!

One of the BIGGEST requests we got was to extend our Advanced Workshop into an option of being a two day workshop. We tossed the idea around a lot because we were planning to do something similar in 2008, but as many of you know the average cost for a workshop like this is $1599 pp. So after talking, thinking, planning, we decided to just go for it and give just about the best deal of 2007 for a workshop! :)

Here’s the scoop!!!

The first day will be Saturday, October 27th, and if you’ve signed up for that you can either stick with it or you now have the option of joining us on Sunday, October 28th for even more! Both days will be from 9:30am-4:30pm. With so many of you flying in from out of state, we want to make the most of your time here!

Day 1 will focus on all the stuff mentioned in yesterday’s post (advanced lighting strategies, shooting techniques with models, and a large focus on Photoshop and how NOT to get overwhelmed by post process).

Day 2, Sunday, will continue into a closer look at sharing some of your images from the model shoot and assignment, the in’s and out’s of how to have a photography business with topics on marketing, finding clients, pricing, branding, how to charge, contracts needed for portraits and weddings, and shooting techniques specific to couples/weddings and groups photo strategies whether it’s a family or a wedding, and a topic close to our heart–working together as a husband and wife team and making this an AWESOME experience and business. And then at some point the guys will probably get a beer together, and we’ll talk about specific issues to women and moms in the photography industry.

Yes, it’s going to be a JAM PACKED two full days! :)

I know you have tons of questions, so here are the most popular FAQ in the last 24 hrs!

Question 1: What will the second day of the Advanced Workshop Cost?

A. $450 for the second day. To some of you new to the industry this may feel like a lot and a definite commitment to your business starting up or growing from where it’s at now. But to those of you who have been in the industry for at least a year know this is a “screaming deal” :) . I can already picture a few of your faces being here! :) And make sure you get your business license on-line if you haven’t already so this workshops can be a tax right off!

Question 2: Is there a discount for doing both days of the Advanced Workshop?

A. Brian and I would like to offer you a $100 credit to use toward one of our Kits. When we speak at photography conferences we sell Kits packed full with information on a certain topic. The Kits are $100; and there are five different ones to choose from;

1. Associate 101 Kit–all you need in legal documents, contracts and pricing to expand your business with hiring associates.

2. Getting Published 101 Kit–all you need to know to get your images published in national magazines with a worksheet to give clients to fill out to help develop a story to pitch to editors, as well as contact info for several editors and the things each like that has taken Me Ra a couple years to pin down. :) As well as waivers and release forms for publishing clients photos.

3. Portrait 101 Kit–all you need to start up your portrait business from the questionnaire to fill out over the phone, to the release forms, how to prepare them for the shoot, and a special section on booking Newborn Shoots

4. Weddings 101 Kit–all you need to get your wedding business off the ground or maybe take it to the next level. The Kit includes; our wedding contract with clients that our lawyer has helped us develop, our excel spreadsheets to help keep your workload organized and payment due dates in place, our pricing strategy and packages, our bride questionnaire when booking, and our payment terms, and vendor lists of who we use and why.

5. Survival 101 Kit for Moms (my favorite and new)–this is my favorite kit that I’m developing for women who have children and are pursuing their dream of a photography business. I can’t wait to share more on all the stuff going into this one from boundaries to set for yourself, to must haves for yourself and your business, to weaknesses women tend to struggle with and how to tackle those in business, and more and more that I’ve got to keep secret for now. :) The rich content in this Kit is inspired by my amazing business coaching sessions and the work she’s done with me as well as many other Fortune 500 CEO moms!

We sell these Kits for $100 each, and we would love to give you the option to choose one for your business if you are attending both days of the Advanced Workshop!

Question 3: Is there a discount if you sign up for all three; the Beginner, the Advanced, and the Second Day for the Advanced Workshop?

A. Absolutely! It’s called “The Big Three” discount! :) If you sign up for all three, we will give you $250 off. The original discount still stands for signing up for a Beginner and Advanced Workshop. That discount is $150 so the total is $750. But if you do all three the total (after the discount) will be $1100, plus the $100 in credit to one of our kits.

Question 4: Can I buy the Kits if I’m only coming to the Beginner Workshop?

A. Of course! We’ll be offering a discount on these Kits as well as other products we carry at each of our workshops!

Question 5: Can I buy these Kits if I’m not able to attend a workshop?

A. Absolutely! Stay tuned on our blog, and we’ll let you know when they are up on our e-store. Probably after we get out of high season craze. :)

Question 6: Will there be any thing happening at night?

A. Yes, depending on how sick of us you are! :) For those of you staying for both days of the Advanced Workshop, Brian and I thought it would be fun to have dinner all together! So keep your night open!

Question 7: What about accommodations and transportation?

A. The workshop is being held at the beautiful estate called the Villa! They have four rooms available and are offering 15% off to our workshop attendees. Be sure to give them a call soon so that you can take advantage of this great deal! Their rooms are just dreamy! Villa’s # is 888-572-1157, ask for the hostess Kristy, and tell her you’re with us! Here’s a photo! But check out their website!

Transportation? Make a reservation with the Capitol Airporter by calling 253-927-6179. They’ll bring you right to the b&b and take you back to the airport. We’ll provide any other transportation you may need.

As I mentioned, we still have spots left in the Beginner’s Workshops too! These are for women only (sorry guys). But the Advanced Workshop, whether you join us for one day or two, is open to both men and women! Which brings me to my last FAQ.

Question 8: Is there a couple’s discount for those of us who are married and both wanting to come?

A. I guess! (lol) Being that we’re a married team, we know what it’s like to try and choose the “lucky” person that gets to go to the workshop. It’s usually me. :) But no, we want to make this as possible as we can for those of you who both want to come because we feel like it would be an incredible benefit to you as a couple! So if you’d like to both attend, your married couple discount is the second day being free for your spouse! Does that sound good? :) And yes, you can still have the $100 credit to one of the Kits. :) But you have to babysit our kids Sunday night so Brian and I can go see a movie! :)

Whoops! on more FAQ!!

Question 9: How do we sign up?

A. Follow this link to our e-store, and you will find the different options of signing up. If you are doing the Advanced Workshop for both days, we ask for a retainer of $550 to hold your spot. If you are planning on taking advantage of the couples discount, the retainer to hold both your spots is $700. If you are planning on doing all three “The Big Three”, the retainer to hold your spot in all three is $600.

Remaining balances will be due within thirty days of the Advanced Workshop dates. The retainer is non refundable if you have to cancel and the remaining portion is refundable if you cancel within 3 weeks of the workshop. However, if we fill you’re spot, we will gladly refund you the whole amount!

***Click e-store! *** to reserve your spot!

I think that’s it! Feel free to email or call with any more questions! Can’t wait to meet you ALL!!!

FYI–I guess that’s not it because I almost forgot!!! If the interest in this 2 day Advanced Workshop (or one day if you prefer) is over the top, we may extend the limit to 30 and fly in a surprise guest! :)

J) What’s a Digital SLR? A camera that has the ability to swap out different types of lenses.

The class size for the beginner workshops are limited to 12 women who are newbies and 3 women who are reserving a refresher seat. We like to keep the group small so that we can maximize your learning experience.

Content Covered:

For the Beginner Workshop: We’ll spend the first half of the day going over the mechanics of your camera and learning about indoor lighting so you can get great shots of your kids in the kitchen, living room and bedroom! The second half of the day we’ll do some hands on shooting as we process all the things we’ve learned throughout the morning. You don’t need a camera with removable lenses for this workshop, you can totally borrow one of ours.

For the Advanced Workshop: If you have a basic understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO but struggle with your light metering and fluency with your camera’s settings while on the go, this is the workshop for you. We’ll take the mechanics and functions of your camera to a higher level. Me Ra’s also excited to address the request so many have emailed her “Will you show us what you do in Photoshop!?” The answer is “Yes!” In the Advanced Workshop, you’ll learn about Me Ra’s workflow and her ten favorite actions/filters for images. If you have a laptop with Photoshop or a similar program please bring it. It’s not necessary but great to have if you have it!

Terms: You can either pay in full on our e-store, or email us about mailing a retainer (non-refundable fee) of $350 to reserve your seat. But please keep in mind that this is a first come first serve basis, and the best want to ensure your spot in a workshop is through our e-store. The remaining balance of $100 (total is $450) must be paid in full 14 days before the workshop date. Call us if you have any questions at 253-468-8913, or email mera@merakoh.com.

Lodging: The workshop is taking place at the Villa, and Kristy has four beautiful rooms available to guests. She is offering a 15% discount to workshop attendees, so whether you’re flying in or local, I’d check at their rooms and take advantage of her generous offer! Call Kristy at 253-572-1157.

If they’re booked up, five minutes from the workshop is a new hotel on the waterfront called The Silver Cloud Inn. The room rate is $159 plus tax. This rate comes with a water view from every room (the whole inn is literally over the water :) ), complimentary breakfast, King Size bed or two Queen Size beds, Free Parking and Free Internet Access. The Silver Cloud Inn is only two miles from the Chihuly’s Museum of Glass, the Tacoma Art Museum, Point Defiance Park and Zoo. There is a beautiful boardwalk right outside the doors of the hotel that follows the beach (a 3.5 mile jog my husband and I often do! :) ). One block away is the center of Old Town, filled with coffee shops and tea houses, and a couple quaint restaurants. There are also bigger restaurants all along the waterfront boardwalk (The Lobster Shop, The Ram, Katie Downs, etc). There were a handful of people in the last few workshops that stayed an extra night to enjoy how sweet this part of the country is!

To reserve your spot now, visit our e-store and click the appropriate workshop, whether you are doing the Beginner, Advanced or attending as a Refresher Seat (no Refresher Seats available for the Advanced Workshop this time around)! You will be given the option to pay your deposit with a credit card. You can also email us for our mailing address to mail a check.

What’s a Digital Sir?

I first have to say I just love all of you ladies!! Sue C. posted my favorite comment/question ever yesterday! I had said on a previous comment that for the beginner workshop you’ll want a Digital SLR (or borrow one of mine). Sue posted and asked what a Digital Sir is. And Sue, your innocence in that question just made my day! :) You have no idea! I’m glad your son filled you in, but you and your question are the reason why i love my girls-only beginner workshops! I had all those same questions five years ago! In one of the workshops, a mom asked me what Shutterture was. She had combined the words Aperture and Shutter Speed, and we all got the best laugh! Laughing with women and growing together–few things in life are that great!

I feel like we’re on a countdown for tomorrow’s big workshop announcement of dates! I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! You’ll hopefully see a photo of the chic place where we’re going to hold it, and you’ll for sure see a video trailer from past workshops! It’s going to be fun!! I will also detail the difference between the beginner workshop and the advanced one, so you can see where you fit in the mix! But I also decided last night to have “refresher spaces” set aside for those of you women who have attended a workshop already and need a refresher. You can join us again for half the price, actually less than half, $200. BUT, you have to help the newbie next to you if you know the answer. :)

Okay, check this out! Pascaline has fallen in love with cameras this summer! I caught her doing a self portrait!

And then yesterday morning, I found her on the steps. She had Blaze’s Superman pj’s on, and she was actually letting Blaze rest on her! I just about died!

These are definitely in the running for my favorite images of the summer!

And thanks for all the wonderful comments about the business section’s write up! It was such a wonderful story, I’m still blown away!

Hyper Focused!

Do any of you ever get hyper focused on something, and then you look at the clock and realize it’s 2:43am!!! I don’t do this very often. That’s usually Brian. But tonight, or should I say this morning, I am the loser b/c my kids are going to totally take advantage of this when they wake up! So that’s why I’m blogging now—because I’m probably going to look and think like a zombie in a few hours!

If you didn’t catch the front page of the Business Section in Friday’s paper, here is the link to our article! It’s titled “Photographers Rise to the Top Gives Message of Hope“. Isn’t that a great title! Especially for the Business Section! A couple details are a little off, but we’ll go with it! :) I was overwhelmed at what Dan, the editor, decided to focus on. I’ll let you read it for yourself. Since Friday, I have received numerous emails from men and women who have experienced similar experiences that the article highlighted, and it’s been a honor to read their stories.

Here’s some more fun news! On Wednesday this week I’m going to release the dates for fall photography workshops, so be sure to check in and be ready to sign up! I’m so excited at how the last couple details are falling into place! The price is going to be $450. Why more? As much as I loved doing it in our home before, it was a bit rough on the kids. So I’ve found a new location that is perfect! (I apologize for the raise in price due to these extra costs) Also, the workshops have been for women, but if I have enough men (10-12), I would be more than happy to have one just for guys or maybe we could mix one up…not sure…probably to late right now. :)

So I’m going to stop now because I’m afraid that I don’t know what I’m saying any more with how tired I am! And I need to get a serious nap in because our good friend, Dane Sanders from CA, is here tonight! And then Mike Larson and his beautiful wife come later in the week! It may just be one of those 3am every night type of weeks. :) Blogs should be interesting if that’s the case. If you want to see a great video, check out what Mike Larson did recently! It’s great!
