To Dream by Brian

Okay, here’s the deal.

Me Ra is still looking at the 100′s of 1000′s of water contest entry’s and she asked if I, her supportive, loving and handsome husband, would write the blog fer her this morning so she can focus on trying to narrow down millions of amazing images to 5 for us to vote on.

Me Ra asked me a while back if she could post one of my poems. I’m not really a “writer”, but when I write or journal it tends to be more of a poem format than prose. They never rhyme though and there’s not much rhythm, but maybe you’ll agree. All that said I thought, posting a couple of my poems for Me Ra’s blog would be an easy way to write her blog for her today as we patiently wait for our 5 finalists!

Disclaimer: If you don’t like reading poetry of any sort, today’s post may bore you to death. So don’t worry. Me Ra will be back tomorrow or maybe even later today.

I’m going to share two, but PLEASE be nice with your comments. I’ve never shared my writing with anymore than 1 or 2 people, so I’m feel a little vulnerable and I know you don’t want to read tomorrow about a grown man crying. That really would be embarrassing for me. (Even more than my underwear shot. We remember how embarrassing that was don’t we? If you don’t, you’re going to have to find that one on your own). :)

This first, one let’s call “To Dream.” I was thinking that maybe I’d give some background to each of them either at the begin or end, but what do you think? Is it interesting to hear about a poems background, or is it more meaningful on its own? Anyway, here’s the first of two.

To Dream

I Need Not to Need
I hate hate
I’m desperately independent
I need to loose to constantly prove I can’t be beat
Like a boxer needing to be punched
My soul longs to be shamed
to know my place
to know what to do
How to be
What to want
without doubt
know I was meant for more
to Dream

————-

Me Ra can just sit down and write and write and write for hours. Me I can write for 1, maybe 2 hours and end up with 1 – 2 words per line for 1-4 pages. I usually spend as much or more of that time sitting and feeling. Other times my mind is blank, I’ve got nothing to say, but remember how much I enjoy the feeling of my pen touching my paper. I enjoy watching the lines, then letters materialize from nowhere, like witnessing God issue forth creation with a word. With his breath.

So I pulled out my pen and pad and in about 30-60 seconds I wrote this next one, which 10 minutes ago didn’t have a name. 9 minutes and 30 seconds ago I thought I’d call it “Warm up” and after reading it about 9 minutes ago though, I think I’ll call it “Reveal”. (Hey, Blaze got to name the dog. The least I get to do is name my own diatribes. And this is actually kind of fun naming them in front of you. I feel like I’m sitting on a stage and this audience is hanging on my every fascinating word…I know…now I’m DREAMING)! :)

Reveal

The pen rolling over my pad
words issuing forth
Living ___ Breathing
Dieing ___ Hating
Loving ___ Birthing
Changing the world
wasting ink
chopping down trees
Starting wars
Saving souls
Entertaining
Boring
Depressing
Inspiring
Unburdening my soul
Releasing my heart
Revealing Your Spirit
Ahhhhhh…..

Well that’s it from me. I hope this was an okay change from my wife’s beautiful voice and charming words.

Brian and I got to brainstorming the other day around the idea of the upcoming December Workshop. (look out!!)

A number of you have been sending us emails with all kinds of workshop requests. Some of you have asked for a Beginner Workshop, like what we’ve done on our City Tour this year. Some of you have also emailed for an Advanced Workshop. And yes, some of you have requested a combo of both. Our readers are very clear on what they want! :) We love this about all of you!

Based on all your emails, we have come up with three different ideas. If you are thinking of attending our Dec. 6 and 7th 2008 workshop, which one of these combos would you prefer attending? Based on what the results are, we’ll release registration for the December 2008 workshop!

*Please note, we ask that you only vote if you are planning or thinking of attending the Seattle, December Workshop. This way it gives us a true idea of what to release. If you want to vote for your own city, please do on the poll below!

Here’s the poll to vote for the December workshop and below the poll are the descriptions of each. (This is a little warm up on voting so your all ready to vote for the winner of the Water Photo Contest tomorrow! :) )

What Combo Workshop Do You Want in December 2008?
( polls)

Descriptions of the Options!

Option A: 2 Day Beginner Workshop!

We do our popular Refuse to Say Cheese, 2 day, Beginner Workshop. The women who attend this workshop vary in levels. We start with the basics and build our way up through post process and lighting. These workshops often sell out and leave people with a desire to attend an Advanced Workshop. The tuition for this workshop is $999, but if you register before Sept. 20th you can get the Early Bird Discount and pay only $749.

Option B: 2 Day Advanced Workshop!

The return of our 2 Day Advanced Workshop! We did this last October, it sold out with people coming from all over the country. We spent the first day on reviewing the Basics and then focusing on Advanced Lighting. posing and technique. We spent the second day talking about the Business side of running a photography part-time or full time business (i.e. marketing, packaging, pricing, etc.) The tuition for this workshop is also $999, but if you register before Sept. 20th you can get the Early Bird Discount and pay only $749.

Option C: The Combo Deal!

We COMBO the two workshops in 3 jam packed days! This is for all you who emailed and asked us to spend 1 day on the Beginner stuff and 2 days on the Advanced stuff. And that’s what we would do! This is the workshop for those of you who would like a refresher on the Basics but want to have a bit more focus on the Advanced Lighting and Business side. We would start Friday morning and end Sunday evening. Okay, Brian and I had fun coming up with the pricing for this. Technically, based on our tuition costs, the workshop would be $1499 for 3 full days. But if you sign up before Sept. 20th, you get the CRAZY Early Bird Discount of all three days for $999! Isn’t that cool!! I think that’s the BEST deal of all.

But you tell us! What do you want to have happen this December in Seattle! Your wish is what we will do!

But wait! Help us plan for 2009′s City Tour too! (And again, only vote if you plan on attending the workshop you are voting for. Thanks so much!)

I VOTE for this Workshop in 2009!

These Three!

We have so MUCH to talk about together on the blog this week with the Five Finalists from the Water Themed Photo Contest to getting your vote on a combo type of workshop to a new photo exercise for you to try! As Fay and Karen would say, “All kinds of delicious stuff happening this week!” :)

Aside from still not understanding San Francisco freeways, my weekend in Berkeley was wonderful. I was filled to the rim with rich conversation about being a wise woman in our life, love and leadership.

But nothing is ever richer then coming home to these three. Today I’m making this post short as I soak these three back in to my being.

Oh, I almost forgot. I had my first experience of a dog being thrilled to see me home again. Wow, these little pups can make you feel good! Rosie totally remembered me and went crazy happy when I came through the door! I have to admit how good that felt. I get dog owners even more!

Here is Pascaline taking Rosie swimming for the first time. If only swim classes for kids could go as fast as dogs learning to swim! I think Rosie had the whole swimming thing down in her first try!

Have a beautiful Monday.

Happy Friday! What a week it’s been with this nasty cold!

I fly out this evening to San Francisco to do a photoshoot for Sophia’s Smile! I’m so excited! In fact, if you are in the Bay area you can look at the website link and join us!

And even better, I get to have a beautiful brunch with my Next Octave girlfriends on Sunday. I am in need of some great “girl time”! We haven’t gathered as a group since early May, and I can’t wait to catch up on how all our businesses, loves, and leadership roles are doing. Brian is going to brave the kids, Rosie and Prince Phillip by himself. I’m sure you’ll find them poolside at the Tennis Club if you need him. Make sure he doesn’t have more than one Margarita! :)

On to Housekeeping! First things first!

The Chicago Workshop is SOLD OUT!!!

And the waiting list is going!

If you are already signed up and wondering about hotel rates, our wonderful workshop hostess, Gretchen, is working away on this. She hopes to have some ideas to us by next week! Stay tuned!

And if you are signed up and wanting to join us for the amazing Add On Day with Bob and Dawn Davis, hold your horses! We are going to allow all registered attendees to sign up first and then if there is any room left, we’ll open it to the public. For registered attendees, look for an email in the next week about how to sign up to see Bob and Dawn!

One last workshop item. Start thinking about a woman you know who is Running On Empty. That’s right, we have the Running On Empty contest for the Chicago workshop coming up! We want to bless a woman out there who is in desperate need of a break from life, an encouraging word and creative inspiration. Be thinking because the nominations will go live in the next couple of weeks.

I lied, one more workshop item. We are still thinking about having a Seattle Workshop the first weekend of December (6th and 7th). I just need to see if our schedule can make it happen. We’ve got a couple crazy, big projects going right now (I mean CRAZY-BIG!). As soon as I have it figured out, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, feel free to keep sending me your emails if you’re interested. I’ve been collecting them into one big folder and plan to send a note out to all of you when we are official on the Seattle date.

If Chicago isn’t your city, where do you want us to consider coming in 2009? You can always email us at mera@merakoh.com and put the word in!

Next…The FORUM, the forum, the FREAKING FORUM!!!!! Can you hear me scream this? :)

The forum has been a journey all in itself! Brian emailed a half dozen of you that replied to wanting to be Beta Testers (thank you, thank you, thank you for volunteering!). I guess he got so many emails that he asked if I would jump on here and thank everyone. If you didn’t hear back from him, it’s because he has already moved forward. But he wanted me to make sure you knew it wasn’t a personal thing! As soon as our Beta Testers are doing trying out a few things, we’ll be that much closer to going LIVE!

Last…the Photo Contests! (yeah! We love the Photo Contests!)

We’ve got the Water Contest to finish up! I’m so excited to post our top Five Finalists next week for the Water Contest! I don’t think we ever said what the prize would be. How about a copy of Adobe’s Lightroom software! Keep an eye out this coming week for the Five Wonderful Finalists!

And a special word to all our voters!!

I had so much fun creating my own “Starbucks Gift Cards” (you know you can customize the image and text!) that I want to do the same thing for the Random Voter Awards on the Water Contest and Pet Contest. But it has to be $25 instead of $20. I know, bummer. Starbucks will only let you have $25. :) And if you don’t like Starbucks, we’ll give you another option or two.

The last day to submit photos for the Pet Photo Contest is the last day of August. The contest officially ends on Sunday, August 31st at midnight PST.

Have a wonderful weekend friends!

I feel like I’m coming back to life after sleeping for three days straight. I spent a little time in the studio working with our albums yesterday, and I had to share this with you.

I had a conversation with our head album designer a few months back. I wanted to do something different, unlike anything we’d ever done in regards to our album design layouts. This new thought process was inspired by a single book I came across. Have you seen it? It’s The Kennedys Portrait of a Family by Richard Avedon.

The design layout in Avedon’s book is simple with lots of full bleeds. What is a full bleed? This means the image fills the page and runs off it. But it’s not just the placement of the images. It’s how Avedon combined the images with simple text and color. This weaving of the three takes my breath away. A former bride told me about this book, and ever sinc, I can’t get it out of my mind. It has seeped into our business bringing a fresh wind of inspiration.

Amy, the head of our wonderful designers, took this project on with me. (She is the brave one here! :) )

We decided to try Katie and Mike’s wedding because it was a wedding with vintage flare and original vows written by the bride and groom. This would be the perfect imagery and unique text to try a design layout with Avedon’s inspiration in the back of our mind. Needless to say, I’m thrilled with the final result. And even better, Katie and Mike are thrilled too! They don’t want a single thing changed.

Take a look at their album and tell us what you think of this Avedon inspiration! It requires more album pages than we usually do so you can accommodate this type of design. The trick is to do the design so nothing feels rushed as you look through the pages. You have a sense of ease with each new page. The album layout is our final service in helping a couple remember their wedding. The very book needs to breathe grace and beauty.

As you watch the slideshow, feel free to pause it at any time to read the beautiful vows that Katie and Mike wrote to each other. But get a Kleenex because their vows will require it!

To see their album layout, click on Katie and Mike’s Wedding Album.

Thank you Katie for letting me try something new with your wedding. Your wedding was an event to be remembered.

p.s. Check back tomorrow for a Friday Housekeeping day on Upcoming Workshops, the Forum and Photo Contest results!

xoxo, Me Ra

Monday, Monday!

The whole family was a bit under the weather yesterday and again today. First Brian, then Pascaline, last night I started feeling it, but Blaze is holding strong.

Since I’m feeling yuck, I’m going to keep this super short and just remind everyone of this month’s photo contest. (Don’t you hate feeling sick when it’s summer time and the skies are blue? Drives me nuts!)

The Photo Contest theme for this month is PETS. The photo is supposed to show us something about their personality.

If you’ve got an image to submit, attach it in an email as a small JPG to contest@merakoh.com. The deadline is the last day of August at midnight PST.

Thanks friends and have a good Monday!

p.s. Rosie is getting better and better at the whole training thing. And we are falling more and more in love with her.

Baby Teaser!

I’m processing a baby shoot that I did for some very special clients. Gayla and her family are so dear to me. So far, my biggest problem is narrowing the images down because there are so many cute ones. I think baby shoots tend to be like that–how can you not like a photo of a chubby baby?

I’ll share a lot more when I’m done processing them, but for now, here are a couple Baby Teasers.

Look at his smile and big brother’s chubby hands!

And this is one of my favorite “mama and me” images. I love the circular motion that is happening because it almost gives off the same warm, covering energy that a mom feels when she is pregnant. Even though this little one has arrived, you can still feel the encompassing, quiet, devoted love of mama.

One last teaser! Guess what DVD 3 is going to be about? :) Yep, DVD 3 is in the works…

A Chance to Try It!

I received an email yesterday from my business coach, Karen Buckley. The email seemed to flow well with yesterday’s post and all your wonderful, vulnerable, beautiful comments.

Karen and Fay Freed are going to offer a Free Teleconference Call to women on August 13th from 4-5pm PST. To listen in on a conference call with these two women as your teachers—oh my goodness! You must, you must! And it’s free! How can you not!

You will hear the wisdom ooze out of their very voices. And then I’m sure you’ll get a glimpse at how these two women have had such an impact on my life, love, leadership and feminine wisdom. In fact, a handful of you are now doing business coaching sessions with Karen Buckley. It’s so fun to hear how much she is helping some of you grow on an individual basis. The lady is simply amazing. If we ever get the Refuse forum finished you’ll get to read monthly columns from her too (hint, hint Brian! :) ).

Here are the details if you want to join in on the conference call. My favorite line is “What is feminine wisdom anyway?” Remember, you can join in and not say a word but just listen. You won’t regret it. These women know how to pack an hour phone call up with all kinds of delicious things to think about!

“Infusing our Life, our Love and our Leadership with
Feminine Wisdom”

? Why should we even bother infusing our life with feminine wisdom?

? What is feminine wisdom anyway?

? How would I know if I have it?

? What benefit will this have in my day-to-day living of life?

Join us in a lively dialogue about these topics!
Find out how you can be a part of the growing Wisdom Connection community.

Please just let us know by return email that you’d like to be a part of the call and we will get you the teleconference access information. info@wisdomconnection.biz

Feel free to invite your women friends to join as well!
It’s the green way to meet.

Brian and I have returned from shooting a wonderful wedding in Moses Lake, WA. We were flown into Spokane from Seattle (a whole 40 minute flight–I know. We are totally spoiled!). Then we drove about 90 minutes into complete farm country. You know you’re in the middle of nowhere when your three choices for eating are Denny’s, Sheri’s and the cafe at Shilo Inn–and the cafe at Shilo Inn looks the best. :)

Our groom is a Portuguese dairy farmer. We had the most fascinating conversations with their family members. And wow, we had the best BBQ and salsa dancing I’ve seen in a long time! Dairy farmers know how to SALSA! And confession time, I have to admit it was nice getting a little break from puppy training. The kids went to Grandma’s and Prince Phillip and Rosie had their own sitter spoiling them both all weekend. Brian and I feel rested, refreshed, and ready to start another week of puppy potty training! :) Thank you for all your tips in Friday’s post! We have already learned so much from what you’ve shared!

I’m excited for you to see the whole wedding, but there is one image I can’t wait to show you. I was taking photos of the bride’s wedding dress and the sweetest little flower girl was practicing her twirls in the background.

I was trying out the Sony 350 with these shots because we have the 35 mm that will go down to a 1.6. I wanted that extreme, low aperture so I could enhance the dreaminess of the little one twirling. And the color on the 350 is FANTASTIC! But did I get this shot on my first try? Not quite.

She was actually twirling in another part of the room, and I thought she was so cute that I had the idea to open up the windows and let her twirl in front of the windows. I wasn’t sure what I was wanting, but I knew there was something to be captured with the vintage wedding dress, bright window light, twirling flower girl. I also felt like this image was about feeling dreamy, not perfect detail or perfect lighting. What would the end result be, wasn’t sure yet–just had this sense.

Creativity is often like this, don’t you think? Your not sure what it is your envisioning, but you know it’s there. You can just feel the quiet nudging inside.

I love how Julia Cameron wrote, “Artists are visionaries. We routinely practice a form of faith, seeing clearly and moving toward a creative goal that shimmers in the distance–often visible to us, but invisible to those around us…” She goes on to write, “Art is an act of faith, and we practice practicing it. Sometimes we are called on pilgrimages on its behalf and, like many pilgrims, we doubt the call even as we answer it. But answer we do.”

How many of you feel called to a pilgrimage of photography? How many of you doubt the call even as you begin to answer it?

I think the toughest, most challenging part to being an artist is one thing and one thing only. It is trust in yourself. Trust that the pilgrimage you desire is not vain or a waste of time, but it is real and meant to bring you joy, wholeness, and restored wonder. Trust that those little nudges or shimmers I see in the distance when shooting a wedding are real and alive only waiting to be found–even if it’s invisible to those around me.

The painful truth is we have all tried trusting these quiet tugs inside us and at one point or another found utter failure as a result. We have all experienced listening to that inner voice only to end up feeling embarrassed in the end. Or maybe you come from a past like mine, where you trusted another person only to be victimized. How could you ever trust your sense of judgment again? Where do you begin?

I don’t often give these types of photo exercises, but I think it’s vital to practice this no matter what form of art you do. It’s an exercise of “exercising” your trust in your creative self.

Find 45-60 minutes this week where you can take your camera and practice “art as an act of faith”. Take pictures of your kids playing, or your pet for the photo contest, or nature around you. But allow yourself to be quiet inside. Have your camera on Auto mode if that will help you relax. Focus on listening to your inner voice. Look for the shimmer inside you that sees the world in a unique way. Try capturing the shimmer. Try following those quiet nudges. And when you feel uncomfortable and awkward remember, we are practicing “art as an act of faith”. Faith is the key component.

When you’re done, look through your images and see if you can identify something different. Write down what that different thing(s) is. I know this is a very abstract photo exercise, and it won’t make sense until you are in the midst of experiencing it. But go with me on this. :) We are working at acknowledging those shimmery things we see in the distance. We are working at trusting our inner, creative voice. And if you are comfortable, email me and tell me how this exercise went. mera@merakoh.com

Let’s shimmer this week in a way we never have.

Meet Rosie! Our new Golden Retriever puppy. She is 8 weeks old and a sweetheart. How could that face ever exhaust anyone? :)

Little background on her and how we came to find her…

Even though Brian and I didn’t grow up with dogs, we love Goldens. They are so sweet in personality and have a great reputation for being the best family dog. We know they shed a lot and plan to tackle that when we get there since we are not “dog hair” fans. But how can you not love their beautiful color and how soft they are? We knew we wanted a female and a lighter Golden that was on the bigger end.

Her dad was a $2K puppy and comes from a line of award Goldens. He is a 95 lb dog (if I remember right). Her mom has the most beautiful, soft coat and is a 75 lb dog. Isn’t she a beauty!

Thus, we’ve got a puppy with big paws.

And don’t forget, her mom’s floppy, soft ears.

Blaze is still warming up to her because when she jumps up it’s a lot more intense for his height than mine. But he is totally involved with feeding her and walking her. It’s pretty sweet.

Pascaline on the other hand has finally met her match. This puppy is as high energy as she is. It’s unreal to watch them run back and forth and roll all over the grass together.

If the puppy wasn’t crying at 5:30am, Pascaline would be up for running all day. But even she is experiencing a little sleep deprivation along with the rest of us from this baby.

The only member of the family who is dead against having a puppy is…Prince Phillip (who is bigger than the Rosie). We don’t let Prince Phillip outside, and this week he has been sitting at the back door watching the kids play with Rosie and not him.

You can feel the bitterness stew.

Prince Phillip is the absolute Passive/Aggressive type and has decided to express his feelings by peeing around Rosie’s kennel–like he’s setting up his own perimeter! Then he throws up at random in different parts of the house–which he has never done before. This is great, just great. But I can somewhat feel for him. Yesterday I found him sitting by his empty food dish after lunch. The kids had forgotten to feed him that morning, the dog had already had breakfast and lunch. And seriously, I literally heard him say, “What the F#$%!” He opened his mouth and literally said the F word to me!

When Rosie comes near him he freaks out. Doesn’t Prince Phillip understand that Rosie just wants to play?

This whole experience reminds me of having a new baby, and I swore I would NEVER be one of those people to compare my pets to our kids! But it’s true!! I get it now! Rosie wakes us up in the middle of the night, needs constant supervision, needs potty training, is super high energy, annoys the heck out of the cat, then without warning…Rosie collapses and the whole family takes a deep breath. And again, it’s just like a baby. Because remember when your baby would totally exhaust you and then you’d see it sleeping and fall in love with them all over again? That’s what I’m talking about!

Okay, so where did we get the name Rosie?

When we were thinking of getting a dog, we started brainstorming names together. Blaze looks up at me and says, “Mama, when I was a little baby someone once told me the name Rosie and I have never forgotten it. I’ve been saving that name for something like this all these years.”

Need I say more? :)

The fun part is that when I looked through Rosie’s papers I learned that her mom’s name is Phoebe Rose. Was this name meant to be or what!

But seriously, we are all a bit frazzled and wondering if we are cut out for this. Do all new puppy owners feel this way or is this a sign of us not being able to endure to the end? How long before they are potty trained? I got up and took her outside this morning for 45 minutes already, and she didn’t go. Then we come in the house and she goes in the house. Am I doing something wrong or missing something here? And what can we do to help Prince Phillip release his bitterness? HELP! The woman we bought Rosie from has been the best trooper. I think I’ve emailed her half a dozen times for advice and encouragement. She’s my Golden consultant. :)

p.s. It’s also August 1st which means we start a whole new photo contest! Can anyone guess what the theme is? If you guessed “PETS”, you are right! :) In honor of Rosie, let’s do a photo contest that is all about capturing the personality of your pet! Start sending in your photo submissions to contest@merakoh.com! The winner gets a $100 to spend at a pet store like Petsmart! Goodness knows you can sink money at these places fast! We’ve definitely seen this first hand this week!
