Meet Joker, Batman, Poison Ivy, and Hawk Girl!!

Joker says, “Why so SERIOUS!” hee, hee, hee, hee!

“Soon Gotham City will be Gotham PARK!”, says Poison Ivy.

“Wish I could say the same Poison Ivy and Joker!” says Batman.

“Hawk Girl is ready to help Batman! Watch out Joker!” says Hawk Girl.

________________________________________________________________

Before Batman and Hawk Girl head off to spoil the plans of Joker and Poison Ivy, we must tell you that Brian made all of Hawk Girl’s costume!! Little did we know dad had such talents!

For the last three nights, Brian has (on his own w/o any of us knowing) been to JoAnn Fabrics and craft stores. And while I’ve been reading to the kids at night, we’ve all been curious to what dad is thinking!

Stage 1 with no template, tracing or anything!

Then he plugs in the hot glue gun like nobody’s business and glues this white mask to an old ski cap. But that is only the beginning!

Watch the master artist work! Brian blew us all away!!! Who freaking knew Brian was this talented at costume design!!

That’s my man!!! I love you babe!

Here’s one Photo Recipe for Jack O’Laterns at night.

I turned off all the lights and lit the pumpkins so I could capture their glow.

ISO was 800 (setting it high so I don’t need my flash), my Aperture was 1.6, my Shutter Speed was 1/125. Suggestions: Set your ISO to 800 and your camera to Aperture Priority Mode. Go as low as you can in your Fstop/Aperture and let the camera choose your Shutter Speed (this will happen automatically b/c your in Aperture Priority Mode (A or AV)).

I decided to show you this shot instead of the others b/c I think a lot of people take Jack O’Latern pictures and get this horrible glare back from the pumpkin’s light. The top pumpkin is a good example of this. But see how the one below has a nice warm glow with no glare shining back? The reason being is that if you take a picture of a lit pumpkin straight on or close to it, the light will be to harsh. But if you step off to the side of the pumpkin, the pumpkin’s light is shining out and not right at you. Does that make sense? Think of it this way, if you point your camera right at the sun and take a picture, to much light and lots of glare comes back. Try this Photo Recipe tonight and see if you can get your pumpkin shots to glow like the lower one instead of the top one.

And Tip #2 for Halloween Photos: Dress up your kids early in the day and take your pictures. If you wait till tonight when it’s dark outside, you’ll be forced to fire your flash. And then the kids will look like they are walking out of a black cave with super pale skin. :) Know what I mean?

So get em dressed early like we did, and go for it!

Happy Halloween from the Justice League family!

Don’t forget, the Atlanta Workshop Registration OPENS on Monday at 6am PST!!!!! Yeah!!!

Workshops & Speaking30 Oct 2008 05:31 pm

Wow, in 24 hours, 46 women said they wanted a workshop in Atlanta this January!

When I started seeing the stats, I ran with it! And wait till you hear what we’ve already set up in the last 12 hours!

Here are some goodies!

1. Brian and I will be teaching the workshop at the studio of the amazing LaCour team! The LaCour team (Rachel, Andrew and Mark) are good friends, and this last year they were voted as one of the Top Ten Wedding Photographers in the WORLD! Yep, amazing stuff! ;)

2. Sooooo, since the workshop will be at their very own studio, they are also going to hang out a bit! Is that cool or what! When we do the live model shoots with moms and babies, they will be around to help you hands on!

3. And on top of this, there is one more thing. Bad news first, we will not be able to fit in a Friday night Meet and Greet, BUT, here is the good news! On Saturday night we will all go out to dinner, and I’ve asked the LaCour team to share a little on their artistic approach to photography during the dinner. :) Don’t be scared away b/c they are wedding photographers. Their eye and creative spirit is so rich. I can’t wait for you to meet them and be inspired not only by us but them as well!

4. Aside from these wonderful sprinklings of LaCour magic, we will have an incredible weekend together doing our Refuse to Say Cheese Workshop! And as you know from our workshop’s reputation, all kinds of stuff is in store!

The dates for the Atlanta, January 09 Workshop are Saturday and Sunday, January 17th-18th!

Okay, we have 46 women and only 20 spots!

Registration will open on the Refuse to Say Cheese site, Monday morning at 6am! The website will share all the details for hotel options, airport to fly into, etc. Once you are registered we will email even more specifics.

And yes, we will have the Early Bird Registration of $799 start Monday and end Friday.

See you in Atlanta!

-photo of Atlanta taken by the LaCours! Rumor is that Andrew used wire cutters to get this shot, we’ll have to ask him about this for sure in January!

If you’d like to get to know the LaCours a little more before the workshop, you can check out their blog here!

p.s. Brian and I were also excited to see how high the numbers were for having a workshop in Dallas or Scottsdale. I’m thinking on it and looking at the schedule. thinking, thinking…thinking…

p.s.s. The Justice League family photo coming soon! :) Happy Halloween!

Workshops & Speaking28 Oct 2008 11:00 pm

As our high (insane) season dies down, Brian and I find ourselves reflecting over all the good this last year. Teaching workshops has been one of the highlights without a doubt. By the end of 2008, over 100 women will have attended our workshops in just this year alone! Isn’t that awesome! It makes me so excited b/c behind every woman was a life touched, inspired, rejuvenated and empowered. Workshops…they are at the heart of where our passion lies.

In the midst of reflecting, we are also mapping out 2009. Turns out we are pretty much booked through May 2009, and we haven’t scheduled a workshop yet. Waiting until the end of May to teach a workshop–that’s FOREVER AWAY! No way! Holding these workshops inspire and fuel us for all the other stuff we do! We need your energy as much as you need ours!

So here’s the deal. We have time in mid January 09 to teach a workshop. Below are four cities that we’ve chosen as options for our January 09 location. Vote below and tell us where you want us to come!

Only vote if you are thinking of attending b/c we do make our decision on the city’s location based on these polls we post.

What City Should the Jan. 09 Workshop Be In?
( polls)

Thanks everyone! You have one week to vote! Once we get the results, Brian and I will soon-after release Early Bird Registration price for our first 2009 workshop! Yeah! And since I know some of you are going to ask, not naming any names :), we are working on the details for the Advanced Workshop too.

One last thing! We only have TWO spots left for the Seattle December Workshop, and then it will be officially sold out! If you are thinking of coming, click here for more info!

See you in January 2009!!

Photography Tips for Moms and Tips for Photographers28 Oct 2008 12:58 pm

The Hawk Girl costume tips are great! Here’s my thank you! :)

After last week’s posts on what photography questions do you have, a number of you emailed me about photo coaching teenagers for Senior Portrait Sessions.

Let me start by saying, Seniors are rarely, if ever, impressed with you.

I remember doing a Senior shoot a couple years ago after we had finished working with VH1. I was relaying the story to this Senior and her mom. We had just got back from Maui, and worked with a VH1 film crew for crying out loud. Was this girl impressed? No way. Her mom thought it was amazing, but her daughter seemed more interested in watching the traffic go by then listening to any thing I had to say. And that is how it often goes. Not always, but often enough.

So here’s the post tip: If your Senior seems unimpressed with you, don’t sweat it. Once they see their photos, you’ll see their face light up.

Having said that, what kind of Photo Coaching do we do with Seniors? A mom barking like a dog isn’t going to fly this time. :)

There is so much to say on the topic, but here are the Top Six Photo Coaching Poses we shoot during a Senior Session. Let me know what you think!

__________________________________________________________________________

Gina Sook, our Associate Lifestyle Photographer, shoots most of our Senior Portrait sessions. She’s awesome! She has been with us for four years now, and her work is beautiful! Last night, Gina was showing me a recent Senior portrait session. Her photos were awesome! AND, Gina demonstrated all the things I wanted to blog about. She said I could use her images as examples, so here we go!

The TOP SIX PHOTO COACHING POSES for Senior Portrait Shoots!

1. Hands Behind on the Wall and Leaning Forward!

We always do a series of shots where we ask the Senior to place her hands behind her at hip level against a wall. Her hands don’t have to be flat against the wall, just gently placed there. Make sure her bottom is touching the wall too. Then have her lean a bit forward into the camera. This is a slimming pose because it elongates her neck and waste.

This is hard to explain to a Senior, so I advise demonstrating it for them. Don’t touch the Senior. Once you touch them by moving their shoulder or chin, they feel like they can’t relax unless you place them. So keep hands off, and model, model, model.

Sometimes a subtle tilt of the head works nice with this pose too.

2. The S Curve Face On!

This pose never feels natural. Be prepared for your Senior to look at you with a frown and say “Is this right?” When she says that just smile back and say, “Yep! You look awesome for the photo even though it feels weird.” Then gently keep adjusting her pose until it’s where you want it, telling her how well she’s doing the whole time so she doesn’t stiffen up on you.

What we’re doing is showing a nice S curve of her hips and shoulders. I usually start by asking the Senior to rest their forearm on their head. Then I ask her to put her weight on the opposite foot to the arm that is up. See below. This creates a curvy line that looks like a S. If I need to, I’ll have her lean into the camera ever so slightly.

Depending on the personality of the Senior, I’ll either have her look away with a big smile, or look right at the camera with no smile or somewhere in between. Even if you don’t use this pose, the S Curve should always be in your mind when it comes to posing women. However they are standing, you want to accentuate motion and curves.

3. The Hip Shot!

This is one of my favorite poses b/c it looks great on so many different body types. It’s a lot like the S Curve above b/c your being thoughtful of accentuating her curves. But it’s a little different. The palms rest on her low back or even lower, depending on her height. Have her push her hips forward and be leaning on one foot more than the other. Then have her look straight at the camera.

Or accentuate the curves by putting a little more sassiness in her hip, elbows and tilt of the head. It’s a flattering pose because the arms behind her are a slimming effect which draws out confident shoulders, her chest and curved lines of her hips.

4. Wide Angles Help Ease the Nerves!

It’s also nice to start with wide angle shots before you move in closer. This gives your Senior a chance to get used to the camera being on her, the sound of you clicking your shutter, and all that other non verbal stuff that makes a Senior tense.

With a wide angle, we still want to be intentional about shooting the shots from a slimming spot. Meaning, we don’t want to shoot straight on. Gina demonstrates this well in her photo. See how it looks like we are looking just a little bit down on the Senior? You see it more in how the railing seems to be descending down.

The Senior is also not standing face on for a reason. Having one shoulder closer to the camera than the other, slims your subject down too.

After Gina grabs her wide angle shot, she moves in for the close up.

The Senior doesn’t have to move anywhere.

5. Teeth, No Teeth and Laugh!

I always take a handful of close up shots whether it’s a Portrait Session or Bride. And I will specifically give these directions, “Can you give me a small smile? Perfect. (click) Now, can you give me a smile with no teeth, only lips? Wonderful. (click, click) Now, close your eyes and go to a quiet place. When you open them, I want to get a shot of you with no smile at all, just your bright eyes looking right into the camera.” (click, click, click) We go through this a couple times so I can capture the many expressions she possesses. Then I end with the Fake Laugh that you already saw us demo on the recent video. :)

6. Try Something Out of the Box!

Gina has done countless portrait shoots at this campus. But the other day, she thought of a new pose that was out of the box. And the results are fantastic! I love the lines of the Senior’s arms and neck and how the shadows help bring definition.

Don’t be afraid to try something new at the end. It’s important to push yourself out of your comfort zone. And once you’ve covered all your basic shots, why not try something totally different. If it works, it works. If not, it’s okay!

There is so much more to say on the subject of Photo Coaching Seniors, but let’s pause for now. Are these tips making sense? Any questions come up for you on the subject?

A BIG, BIG thanks to Gina for letting us use her images as examples. Gina, your awesome!

For booking a session with Gina, email our Studio Touchpoint lady, Genie! (genie@merakoh.com). Genie is happy to answer all your questions.

Question: How do we price our Senior Sessions?

Check out our Portrait 101 Kit to see what my Senior Portrait Pricing is and what the package includes. We also have new packages that we created this year for Gina to offer. We like to change it up every so often for her, and these three packages have been going over well! If you buy the Portrait 101 Kit (or if you have bought it in the past), email Genie with your email receipt. Write “Gina’s Senior Packages” in the subject line, and Genie will forward those to you. (please note: These are Gina’s new packages and are currently not in the Portrait 101 Kit, but just ask Genie and she’ll email them to you once you’ve purchased the 101 Kit.) Also, give Genie a day or two to get those to you. The kit also comes with Photo Release Waivers, Marketing Ideas and Much More!

Blaze is going to be Batman.

Pascaline is going to be Poison Ivy.

Brian found an old suit and purple shirt at the second hand store. He’s going to be the Joker.

And Mom, mom is supposed to be Hawk Girl. Oh boy. I need help!

How do I make a costume to represent myself as Hawk Girl from the Justice League?

That is her on the far right. HELP! :)

She wears a yellow strapless top which I’m not totally up for with how cold it is here. :) And then she has these huge wings. I feel like all thumbs when it comes to craftiness like that. Any ideas? Anyone!

“Why Hawk Girl?” you ask. Since Blaze was 3 yrs. old he has called me his Hawk Girl. The whole first year I thought he was saying “Hot Girl”. :) I loved it! Then Pascaline and dad informed me of the Justice League and the actual hero named Hawk Girl. That’s the why. :)

Here’s the deal…

If you give me some good ideas on what kind of costume to make as Hawk Girl, I’ll post the my Top Six Poses for Seniors Portraits today! At 1pm! :)

Advise away friends!

Photo Contests!27 Oct 2008 05:38 am

Brian and I want to thank each of the nominees for the Chicago Running on Empty contest.

We read every one of your stories, sometimes two or three times…struck by your strength to carry on. The heaviness you are carrying must leave you out of breath. And yet, you are still going. Still caring for your little ones. Still choosing to wake up every morning and give of yourself. We are deeply moved.

To narrow this down to one woman is never an easy task. I’m glad I don’t have to decide.

Brian and I consider it a great honor to leave one spot open in each workshop for a Running on Empty mom. And with every workshop, we pray that not only the winner but every nominee is blessed in some special way.

For the Chicago workshop, the Running on Empty Winner is Nicky!! Nicky was nominated by her friend Kelly!

This is Nicky’s amazing story that Kelly posted…

I absolutely have to nominate my friend Nicki. Without a doubt. I think she has been “running on empty” for years. We met and became friends a LONG time ago. Before kids. Before even the weddings. We met at work - interviewing on the same day for 2 different positions in the company. We were both hired and started right away. We both had fiancĂ©es and were married within 2 weeks of each other. Then, 2 years later our lives took very opposite directions when she came down with lymphoma; cancer of the lymph system. They caught it fairly early. But even then, the chemotherapy was harsh and exhausting. I really cannot imagine going through it myself. But she was a fighter. I remember admiring her so much for her positive attitude. I remember she never said anything negative about her situation. I even remember telling her how amazed I was that she had so much strength and confidence. She just smiled and told me she just wasn’t going to let it beat her. And it didn’t.

Right after she finished her treatments and was in the clear for a few months, they found out she was pregnant! Which was supposed to be impossible to have happened - but by a miracle it did and nine months later her little boy Duke arrived. So much happiness! But just a few months later, Hurricane Ivan hit their beach front condo and they had to move in with her husband’s family in town for 6 months until their condo was livable again. So, things started rolling downhill again.

Nicki’s husband lost his job. It was a very stressful time financially with the baby, the new condo, and just life. She started working back at the same company we worked together at years ago. She tried getting a second job with a makeup company, which didn’t end up working out. I just remember she was working so hard and racking her brain to come up with a job to do that she would love and make some money.

And when the crazy mortgage times hit, they lost the condo. Her hubby ended up finding a job, but they had to move and start all over again. Then things at work started changing with her picking up another employee’s job. So now she’s working 2 jobs, not getting paid nearly enough. They were into the rental house trying to make ends meet.

That’s when she & I both discovered we LOVED taking pictures. We took pictures of our kids all the time. It was an addiction =) And it was Nicki that suggested we take a class and learn to do it right and start a business. So, we did that about 2 months ago. And she got your DVDs to help us out even more. And she has encouraged me and helped me all the way. She has been such a good friend to me.

So, I can’t think of anyone who would need a day off and attend a photography seminar with you - more than her. And have something positive happen in her life. Something encouraging and enriching. And empowering. She is truly running on empty.

Please choose her and spoil her and let her enjoy something she’d be able to do only once in a lifetime.

Kelly

________

Well Nicky, you have been chosen, and we guarantees you will be spoiled and this weekend will be life changing! You, my dear, get to give to your creative self for a whole weekend with 20 other wonderful women! We are so excited for you!

Nicky, we ask that you contact us by this Friday to confirm you can come. To contact us, email Genie at genie@merakoh.com with your info. If we don’t hear from you by this Friday, we will assume the opportunity didn’t work out.

If this is the case, we will contact the runner up. The invitation to come to the workshop will be extended to her. (If any of you, besides Kelly, know Nicky, please email her and share the good news so she doesn’t miss out on this opportunity!)

Again, thank you to everyone for nominating these amazing women. If you’d like to nominate someone for the upcoming Seattle’s Workshop in December, we will begin accepting nominees on Thursday’s blog post this week! Keep a look out.

All our love to the Chicago nominees. Your strength and commitment to keep going is strength to the rest of us. Thank you for sharing your stories with us. Thank you for not giving up, even when your Running on Empty.

Much love, Me Ra and Brian

Wedding Slideshows24 Oct 2008 06:15 am

I’m so excited for you to see this wedding slideshow! I usually don’t put the Rehearsal Dinner in the slideshow, but this was such a fun group of people. They all had a blast at the Rehearsal Dinner, and from what Brian and I understand, they started celebrating the night before. When a large group of people flies in from all over the country to celebrate two people with such adoration, wow, you can’t help but love shooting the event.

Thus, you get to see a little bit of the Rehearsal Dinner in Catherine and Trevor’s Slideshow.

But before you watch the slideshow, I want to share some of my favorite photos with you.

Just before the ceremony, I had Catherine sit on this ottoman. The ladies got ready downstairs in the Women’s Locker Room at the Sanctuary. There weren’t any windows or available light. Lockers were everywhere. Keep in mind, it was a beautiful locker room! But I wanted to capture Catherine in the setting without the setting taking over the image. Does that make sense?

I decided to have Catherine sit and look up at the light to illuminate her face and dress. Because I metered on Catherine, the lockers went dark in the background. I was so excited with what happened. She glows. Isn’t she beautiful!

Light was the theme of the day b/c at times we would have light, then we would lose it and have a down pour of rain instead. But when the sunset started, I ran to Catherine and Trevor. They were such great sports b/c I swear they had barely sat down to finally eat. I’m sure my body language yelled, “Stop! Don’t EAT. We have to go back outside!!!” We couldn’t let this sunset lighting get away from us!

Brian’s perspective.

And mine.

The light was golden, and then the stormy clouds decided to have their say in things. This photo has to be one of my FAVORITE from our whole year! I love how dark every thing was getting around them, how moody the sky was, but the sun is still illuminating them as it sets.

The groomsmen were a blast to work with. They were up for just about anything. The slideshow has some fun shots of them too, but this is one of my favorite.

And last but not least, a classic Brian shot. Tight frame drawing out the intimacy between these two. I know I say this all the time, but I am saying it again, “I love Brian’s eye!” Brian captured the second shot as well.

Catherine and Trevor, we are so happy for you! Thank you for allowing us the honor of capturing your day. Your family and friends were wonderful to work with. And you two, you two were amazing!

Much love to you both!

xoxo, Me Ra

p.s. Now the rest of you click on Catherine and Trevor’s Wedding! Then if you have time, post a comment to congratulate these two.

…..

Upcoming for Monday…

I’m going to get back to answering some of your questions, and we are going to announce the winner for the Chicago Running on Empty contest! Yeah!!!

Amazing Associates23 Oct 2008 01:55 pm

If you haven’t yet, meet Yuriy, one of our AWESOME Associate Photographers,

and his lovely shooting partner, Julia, (Julia, we SO NEED a photo of you!).

Brian and I book a limited number of weddings each year, and then we hand the rest off to this amazing duo. We are proud to have Yuriy and Julia on our team!

And let me just say, they blew a local Seattle wedding out of the water this month!!

And I’m not just saying that because our kids were the Ring Bearer and Flower Girl!

Below is the beautiful slideshow Yuriy created. Click on the play button to watch it. Yuriy and Julia’s combined talent and artistry on this wedding means the world b/c it was my cousin Jason getting married. Jason and I have been with each other since we were kids. He is one of the most kind men I know. He is always there for you. And, he is a total goofball. This image…this is totally Jason’s personality! You nailed it Yuiry!

Jason and Kyu are so dear to us, and I couldn’t have asked for two better photographers then Yuriy and Julia. Thanks you two!

And a big congrats Jason and Kyu. We love you!

Photography Tips for Moms22 Oct 2008 12:16 pm

Last week, I did an interview with Pictage and a number of photographers asked for suggestions on how to Photo Coach a family session. What is Photo Coaching?

Photo Coaching is a term Brian and I came up with when we realized we are not photojournalists. We are not the fly on the wall. Our clients look to us for direction in how to relax in front of the camera. And we love using a number of strategies to help this happen. Whether your client is paying you $200, $2K or $20K or is a high fashion model, at some point they look at you and your camera and say “Now what do you want me to do?” Photo Coaching is our answer to that question.

Since the issue of Photo Coaching a Family Session has come up a few times in your comments and emails, let’s make this topic Segment #1!

Read this over and then tell me what other questions it stirs for you.

__________________________________________________________________________

I find that Photo Coaching my family shoots happens before the session as well as during.

If it’s a family, I make sure I know how old the kids are (before I go to the session). I tell the parents prior to the session, at the beginning of the session, during the session and after the session (seriously!) that “I know you don’t feel like we’re getting any shots, but I promise we are. Don’t worry. Your kids are doing fine.” Parents ALWAYS freak out about how their kids are behaving or not behaving. And thus, they tend to be the most stressed out looking subjects of all. I know you know what I mean!

So with the kids, I strategize my session in how I set up the shots. I get the group shots often done first b/c these are the toughest when kids are tired.

And this is often what kids expect to do when a photographer shows up. But once we have those out of the way, I do sibling photos (brothers together, sisters together, etc).

I have them sit cheek to cheek and model what I mean with their mom.

I have the younger ones tickle the older ones.

I have dad stand right to the side of me and make goofy faces right above my lens. I have mom bark like a dog when the kids least expect it. No matter how old the kids are, they always laugh when mom jumps out barking like a dog. And the most reserved of moms will do ANY THING for a great photo of her kids.

It’s the opposite of weddings, I find that if I’m being goofy for the kids they don’t respond as well as when their own parents are being silly. If I have a high energy child who can’t sit still, I have dad hold him tight and tickle the crap out of him.

I then split them up and take one parent with me and one child. I have them sit on the ground (I like cement best because it casts up a great grey light) and take close up shots of them individually. Then I get the parent in there for some shots together, and I work through the whole family this way, one child at a time.

At the end I use my zoom lens and shadow the kids. I used to do this in the beginning and try to capture them “just being kids” but they take advantage of the freedom really fast and need direction. I found the situation would unravel faster than if I let them do this at the end when nothing else is really expected of them and now they are free to roam and play.

Does any of this help?

For info on how to start up or beef up your Portrait Business, check out the popular Portrait 101 Kit.

And then if you want help with the actual shooting, see the DVDs.

What questions does this post bring up for you?

Also, Steph asked yesterday about who should attend the December workshop. All levels, and I mean ALL levels. In every workshop we have women who are total beginners to women charging clients. But I found that there is a common thread with each woman: a lack of confidence in the technical side of photography which breads a lack of confidence in their overall photography aspirations. We tackle the technical stuff head on (from a women’s perspective in digesting tech stuff), aside from many other topics we discuss. But really, all levels gleam from the workshop. Steph, we hope to see you in December! Women are flying in from all over, and we are going to start the Christmas season off with a blast!

Chicago ladies! We are counting the days! :)
