Today’s blog is becoming one of my favorite kinds of posts to do! I’m featuring another Amazing Mom who is going to inspire you and probably make you cry at the same time. But before we get started, one quick item. It’s GOOD NEWS!

In case you didn’t hear, we are going to extend the Early Bird Discount for the Minneapolis CONFIDENCE Workshop to this coming Friday, September 4th! A handful of you have signed up last week, and I know a few more wanted to get in at the Early Bird rate. So instead of ending the discount on Tuesday, we’ll go to Friday! I hope the little bit of extra time helps. CLICK HERE to get one of the last spots!

Okay, Today I’m super excited to introduce you to the beautiful Tracie Stier-Johnson!

Tracie Stier-Johnson, an Amazing Mom and Portrait Photographer!

When I invited blog readers to send me an email if they’d like to be interviewed, Tracie was one of the many who emailed back. I was so excited b/c Tracie is one of the most beautiful spirits I’ve ever met. We first met when she attended our CONFIDENCE workshop in Chicago last November. And I fell in love with her. This amazing woman has endured so much hardship in life, and yet she still sees promise and hope in every new turn. You’ll see what I mean. She is simply amazing.

1. Tracie, when did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people and putting up a website?

I started my business only a few short months ago! Like most photographers, once I had children (starting 14 years ago), the camera was constantly in my hand. I have photos everywhere.

Then, mid-last year, enter the blog world and flickr {both new to me}. I found my insides turning with a strange feeling of angst in wanting to take images like the beauty I was seeing all over the Internet. So I signed up for a couple of workshops. I truly just wanted to take better photos of my children and our travels. Starting a business was the last thing on my mind!

I already owned a business, a small stationery store I’d had for 8 years, at the time … I seriously was not looking for a new or additional career!

Apparently, God had other plans for me. After attending Me Ra’s Chicago CONFIDENCE workshop in November of last year, I came home and offered photo sessions to several of my friends and their families. Just for fun and to continue to hone in on the skills I learned at the workshop.

Tracie Stier-Johnson

Me Ra, you truly made the technical side of photography click with me! {get the little pun?} :) I walked away from the workshop thinking, “I can do this.” And an ever-so-small voice was whispering to me … “you can do this.”

For other lengthy reasons that revolve around wanting and needing to be emotionally ‘present’ for my children, I decided to sell my stationary store. And somehow … in the meantime, I started a photography business.

It was crazy. It all started with a donation of a photography package to an auction. I typically donated a stationery package from the store, but couldn’t. So thought, “Hey, I can donate a photography package.” One thing led to another … I needed a name {tsj photography}, a website, business cards, pricing packages … whew! A new business was born!

After I sold my store, I’ve never looked back. This is the first summer I’ve been home with the kids. My photography business is building at just the right pace for me. After each portrait session, I’m continue to learn and evaluate what went well and/or needs improvement. I’ve got just enough sessions that I’m not overwhelmed with editing, etc., but also have ample playtime with the kids. It’s been amazing!

And like Leslie, I’m amazed when I look back at my sessions from just six months ago how I’ve continued to evolve in my work, but also my confidence.

2. What inspires your photography?

Honestly, I continue to be inspired by the amazing images I see all around me. I definitely strive to have my own look … and when I see other images that inspire, it makes me want to be a better photographer. Truly, there is something that happens to my insides when I see an amazing image and inspires me to want to be a part of that incredible beauty and deliver that beauty to my clients.

Tracie Stier-Johnson, Amazing Portrait Photographer and Mom!

3. What inspires you as a person, artist?

First and foremost, God. I’m seriously inspired by the gift He’s given me. I believe God has entrusted us all with a gift or talent and it’s up to us to nourish it, which in turn, thanks him for giving it to us.

Tracie Stier-Johnson, Amazing Portrait Photographer and Mom

Secondly, my children inspire me {is that cliche?}. They make me want to be a better person, a better mom. They make me want to give them myself, and ultimately my clients the very best of me. I’m constantly inspired by their innocence, energy, creativity … they inspire me to be the best I can be.

4. What are the classes/workshops/DVDs you’ve watched to teach yourself photography? Were they helpful?

I feel incredibly blessed with the path I’ve taken. It amazes me when I look back at how each piece fit perfectly for my future plans … even if I didn’t know it at the time.

Of course the only DVDs I’ve ever watched are the very amazing “Refuse to Say Cheese” and “Beyond the Green Box.” J I watched Refuse to Say Cheese last summer and immediately took the girls outside to ‘play’ and catch all the little details of toes, dimpled hands and dress ruffles. I thought I was “it!” The stuff photographers were made of! Seriously, Me Ra’s DVDs opened my eyes big time!

Then I took a private class with Jessica Claire. She taught me a lot about natural lighting and how to catch it right.

Tracie Stier-Johnson

When I got home, I ordered and watched Me Ra’s second DVD, Beyond the Green Box. Me Ra and Brian made it all sound so simple! I was already signed up for one of their workshops and couldn’t wait to talk in person about any other questions I had. From watching the DVDs, I was definitely able to have more confidence in shooting in manual {my goal}, but I feel like I was still missing something.

The CONFIDENCE workshop was like the flood gates of Heaven opening! I could hear the angels singing ‘Hallelujah” when I finally got it!! Me Ra, you guys must see that moment all the time in your workshops! I’ve been shooting in manual ever since your workshop and have even been trying to teach some of my friends the simplicity of it. No technical mumbo-jumbo … I call it Me Ra – ease. J

In April, I went to the Learnfest workshop. It was helpful to me in getting my business off the ground. It definitely gave me things to think about in the way I wanted to approach my business.

And the last workshop I went to was the amazing, awe-inspiring, goose-bump giving. It was the Discovery Workshop in San Francisco that Me Ra and Brian held with Rick Chapman and Garrett Burdick … absolutely amazing! The Discovery workshop really helped me see myself as an artist, not just a photographer. It helped me open up and learn how to make better connections … with myself, with others, with my clients. An experience I will forever be grateful for and will never forget.

6. What was your first “paid” shoot like? How did you feel on the way, during and after?

I get butterflies before every session! So I don’t think my first paid one was any different. Is that weird? I feel like I’d done enough free, portrait building sessions … I’d done what I could to be the best photographer I could be {at that time, not to say I don’t continue to grow and evolve}. But I’d prepared myself enough to have the confidence I needed to know I would succeed. Trust me, that sounds better than what I was feeling on the inside, but the ‘brain’ part of me was saying, “you can do this. This is what you’ve been training for.”

So … my first official session was truly like all my sessions, only better than my free sessions, because I’d come to a place where I thought, “yeah, I can do this … I’m really doing this!”

7. What is the best and toughest part about doing this while being a mom and wife at the same time?

The best part is having the ability to take beautiful photos of my family! Also, for me at least, I need to have something outside of my family that is just for me. That makes me feel like I’m contributing in some other way. So having this business allows me to keep myself ‘whole’ and in turn be more for my family.

The toughest thing would definitely be the logistics of leaving the family when I have a photo session. But that leads to my answer for the following question …

8. What is one piece of advice you’d give to newbie’s?

Balance. Keep things in perspective.

Tracie Stier-Johnson

But isn’t that true about anything we do? We want to be all and give all … to all! I think we have to realize, and more importantly be okay with, the fact that we can’t do-all and be-all.

My family is my first priority. I’ve taken that all into account when starting my business. I don’t want to work on Sundays, so I don’t offer sessions on Sundays. And a session on Saturday will cost more than a weekday. I’ll also continue to limit myself to 2 sessions a week. It’s very tempting to schedule, schedule, schedule. We don’t want to turn anyone away, we’re anxious for the business and opportunity … but I have to remember, “At what price?”

9. What else would you like to add that I’m missing? Feel free!

I’d like to share two more things. The first involves adversity. I know from reading the hundreds of comments, and from talking to others at the workshops … we are all facing adversity in one form or another.

I was recently diagnosed with early stages of Multiple Sclerosis {MS} and have started a treatment to slow progression of the disease. It’s an every-other-day injectable medication that I have to take for the rest of my life. I’ve lost part of my vision in my left eye, and unfortunately, I shoot using my left eye. I’ve been trying to switch over to my right, but when I’m in the heat of the moment … I revert to my old habits. I’ve also been losing my close-up vision. Almost daily, it gets worse. I find myself having to move items further and further from my eyes, again … difficult when I’m trying to look at the viewfinder to see what I’m getting. Bottom line is that I’m dealing with it.

And not for one minute have I asked, “why me.” Instead, I’ve chosen to embrace my diagnosis and move forward with a brave face even though I may not always feel brave.

The second thing I’d like to share … as I mentioned before, I believe we’ve all been given a gift or talent and I’m so thankful I’ve been given the gift of photography. What an amazing craft we’ve been charged with! Giving others everlasting memories … makes me smile just thinking of it!

Tracie Stier-Johnson

I’ve had a yearning in my heart to give back to others through my photography. I wasn’t sure what all that meant and hadn’t had it sorted out yet. I was worried what others in the industry would think, etc. Me Ra, I don’t know if you remember us talking about my thoughts? We were at Stinson Beach in the little clubhouse on that rainy afternoon during the Discovery Workshop, and I brought the subject up to you. You were the sweetest ever and encouraged me to continue figuring out exactly what it was I wanted to do. And not to worry about what others thought. If it was in my heart, I should do it.

And I did! I’m currently giving back half my profits to organizations all over the world. My giving plan is focused on organizations mostly overseas involving mother, children and the spreading of God’s Word. You can read more about it here GIVING PLAN. I feel so incredibly blessed to have this plan.

I encourage everyone to look for ways you can give back … it doesn’t have to be grand … but it should be something that makes you feel good!

Me Ra, thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my story with your readers. My hope is that I’ve inspired and encouraged anyone that might be feeling uncertain in their own story.

—————————————————————-

We’ve had a crazy week. Good on so many levels. But crazy too.

We got home from camping late Sunday night. I did a speaking engagement Monday night. We were out Tuesday night. Our house was full of 63 people for the Pictage gathering on Wednesday night. Family from out of town arrived yesterday and today is Friday. phew.

This week and next week are two consecutive weeks that we’re home, and I had all these goals. Organize my office, once and for all! Every wedding season the same thing happens, by the end, it’s chaos as we’ve been going hard all summer. How about organizing the craziness under our bathroom sinks? That’s another thing I want to tackle. Or, transplant some flowers in my garden. Bills? That is one for sure. Ugh, bills. Order Pascaline and Blaze’s homeschool materials. Start gearing up for 3rd grade. The list goes on and on. It’s like we have two weeks at home, and I think I’m Wonder Woman and want to catch up on everything. When all my body really needs is some serious down time and rest. So is that part of the game–to travel this much means your bathroom cupboards may never be organized?

I must admit…I feel pretty wiped today. And then I stumbled upon a gift last night. While I was working on a new Amazing Mom Feature, which I’m so excited to share, I came across this slideshow at Garrett Burdick’s blog. I don’t know how I missed this back in May! But I did! It’s a slideshow that Garrett did from our 3 day, intensive Discovery Workshop. I watched it and tears ran down my face. The slideshow brought back all the wonderful memories from that weekend; focusing on nurturing the artist within, digging deep, stretching the creative spirit, and not being afraid of the results.

If you haven’t seen the Discovery Workshop slideshow, check it out. The song that Garrett chose is perfect. (Awesome job Garrett. Man, we miss you guys!)

I love the Fall, and I can feel it approaching. The early morning air is just a little colder than it’s been. But change is also never easy for me. Anyone relate? It’s as if I need to be a little more intentional about nurturing myself as the upcoming changes pass through our family and my heart. And of course, I need to let the bathroom cupboards go!

Are you feeling change in the air? How do you deal with change? Are you feeling the pressure to organize your life before the new school year starts? What is one thing, like bathroom cupboards, that you can let go of?

much warmth,

Me Ra

Yes, you have to take three showers to get the campfire smell out of your hair, and you freeze at night when the temperature drops, and you have nightmares about what things live in the bottom of the outhouse toilet–then your daughter drops her flashlight down there because she needs to know. Was Brian’s “Disappearing Blackberry Peach Gluten-Free Crumble” awesome or what? I love that guy. Your comments made, I’m talking MADE, his day. You can be sure to see the Mean Mojito recipe soon! :)

If you follow my Twitter Feed (merakoh), you probably noticed that we came back from a 5 day camping trip on Sunday night. It was AWESOME! HILARIOUS! I can’t wait to show you the images and tell some funny stories. Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have that ready for you. But I want to tell you about one of the best photography conferences this November (because the seating is selling out fast!).

One of our FAVORITE photography conferences is the PICTAGE PARTNER CONFERENCE!!! This year it’s going to happen in the French Quarter of New Orleans on November 3-5, 2009!

Brian and I are excited to be a part of this. I think this is our fourth year speaking at Partnercon (Partner Conference). And this year, we are going to do a different type of talk, per request and encouragement from our good friends at Pictage. Instead of talking about Marketing and Technical Skills, we’re going to focus on reviving YOU! Here is the summary!

Joe Buissink

Me Ra and Brian of Me Ra Koh Photography

Revive the Artist in You: Live the Impossible Life!

What does your life look like? Has stress piled so high that your creative child can’t play anymore? Me Ra and Brian are excited to bring something unique to this year’s Partner Conference! They are shifting their focus from marketing and shooting to YOU and how to rediscover your creative self- the most powerful piece of your business. In this session you will learn simple exercises and practices that you can do to revive the artist within you. Me Ra and Brian believe that their commitment to constantly rediscovering their creative selves is the foundation for living their lives and running their business. Come to this session ready to be inspired, artistically refreshed, and ready to look at your business in a whole new light.

Want to join us?!!

New to the idea of Pictage Partner Conference? Let me fill in some blanks.

First, to find out who Pictage even is (and you must find out if you don’t know–they are a HUGE piece to our photography business), CLICK HERE! All our workshop attendees get a free, 1 yr. membership to Pictage Lite!

But the reason Pictage’s Partner Conference is so amazing is because you get to hear from the industry’s best in an intimate setting for 2 1/2 days for only $200 (or less, depending on how early you sign up!). Instead of a HUGE conference with thousands of people, PartnerCon is limited to a few hundred. It feels small enough to handle. You know what i mean? I can say without hesitation, that you will love it. And this year, you don’t have to be a Pictage Member to come. Anyone can come. ANYONE! Plus, this year the conference is going to host several Live Shoots with some of the speakers based on first come first serve basis. So basically, you get the opportunity to spend a couple of hours shooting alongside one of your photography heroes. How can you beat that? This year our heroes will be back doing new talks; Joe Buissink, Denis Reggie and more! Click HERE to see the awesome speaker line up and their topics!

The location is going to be the beautiful Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel. More DETAILS

Q: Have you ever been or felt like a Wall Flower?

Brian and I are working on a way to help host a “newbie” Pictage dinner one night. If you’ve ever been or felt like a Wall Flower b/c you were new to a group and didn’t know how to break in, you are not alone. The idea is still in the works, but if you come to Partnercon and don’t know anyone, we want to help you feel comfortable and welcome. Maybe we can find a place to all meet at for dinner. What do you think? This 21/2 day conference is about giving to you, leaving you inspired and most of all, connected.

We hope to see you there!

See you at Pictage Partner Conference 2009 New Orleans

P.S. If you are interested in one more chance to attend a CONFIDENCE workshop before the end of 2009 (think Early Christmas Present), what do you think of a Seattle CONFIDENCE Workshop on November 14th and 15th? We are making final decisions about our 2009 speaking schedule, so post a comment or email Genie today! (genie@merakoh.com)

Hey, this is Brian (aka Me Ra’s amazing husband :) ) signing in today!

We got home from a great week of camping last night. I know Me Ra’s got a lot of great images and stories to share this week, but I’ve been really excited to share my own original “Disappearing Blackberry Peach Gluten-Free Crumble” recipe that I created last week. Being tired from returning late last night, Me Ra enthusiastically agreed to let me write today’s blog.

Last week Me Ra, the kids and I decided to try out a new bike route. Our neighbors told us about a fun route called the Interurban trail starting in Auburn. We ended up riding 26 miles, looking for the restroom that was supposedly three MORE miles away. Yes, I said 26. And that’s NOT Kilometers. I can’t believe Pascaline rode the 26 miles. When we got home later, Pascaline insisted she wasn’t tired. But for some reason she just leaned against the car for a L O N G time.

The highlight of the bike ride was the 2 mile long blackberry patch lining the trail. This is where we took a little break on the way back to the car. We left the patch with a ton of Blackberries and a little boy who looked like he’d been painting a house purple. :)

Me Ra had the great idea that we should make a Blackberry Cobbler when we got home. I jumped up and volunteered for the task. I LOVE Summer Blackberry desserts (or really any kind of dessert)!!! :)

The only problem is that I can’t eat anything with Gluten any more. We recently found out that Gluten keeps me up at night with a form of insomnia known as Restless Leg Syndrome. Ever since I stopped eating Gluten, I’ve been able to fall asleep. (For anyone who doesn’t know, Gluten is the protein in Wheat and Oats. So basically I can’t eat anything with Wheat or Oats in it. Talk about a pain, especially for a Swedish roots boy who has great respect for dessert!)

And then I saw my Gluten-free diet problem as a fun challenge. How could I go wrong with a bunch of sugar and butter? :) So I searched the net for the yummiest Blackberry Crumble recipes. Then I searched for Gluten-Free Blackberry Crumble recipes for the best wheat substitute ideas. Finally I went to our local yuppie grocery store for more gluten-free flour substitutes. I added a little sweet tooth twist and this is my very on original “Disappearing Blackberry Peach Gluten-Free Crumble” recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 Cups Fresh Picked Blackberries (You should probably rinse these off first)
  • 1 Large Fresh Peach
  • 2 or 2 1/2 Cups Organic Sugar (This depends on your sweet tooth. I recommend 2 1/2 Cups.)
  • 1 3/4 Cups Gluten Free All Purpose Backing Flour (I used Bob’s Red Mill)
  • 3/4 Cup of Sweetened Coconut Flakes
  • 2 Sticks of Room Temp/Softened Butter
  • Few Teaspoons of Lemon Juice
  • Few Dashes of Cinnamon
  • For a little more gourmet flavor I might add little Vanilla, Cardamom, Nutmeg or other tasty spice next time
  1. Coat 3 Quart Baking Dish with Butter
  2. Put Blackberries and Peaches into the 3 Quart Backing Dish
  3. Splash a couple teaspoons of Lemon Juice over Berries and Peach (It think this is for more than flavor, does anyone know?)
  4. Sprinkle a portion of your Sugar (about 1/2 to 1 Cup) over Berries and Peaches
  5. Mix Butter, remaining Sugar, Flour, Coconut Flakes and Cinnamon in BIG bowl (I softened my butter in Microwave)
  6. Spread Crumble Mix over Berries
  7. Bake Blackberry Peach Crumble for 35-45 Minutes at 350°

Serve warm with Vanilla Ice Cream, and this is what you get!!!

Disappearing Blackberry Peach Gluten-Free Crumble

That was YUM MAY!!! So my family told me. Give it a try. I think you’ll love it. I’m going to try and bake another one later this month and hopefully post a picture of it out of the oven before we gobble it up.

I’ve also started making a MEAN Mojito this summer, inspired by Me Ra’s brother Shaun. If you’d like me to post my MEAN Mojito recipe let me know.

Until then, in the immortal words of Julia Child’s, “Bon Appetite!”

-Brian

p.s. Jeramy, don’t leave me hanging by not posting a comment today. :)

Remember these beautiful Seattle Workshop ladies and the token man, Brian? ;) We joked about how this image demonstrates how the fear the Seattle Sistas felt when we started teaching them how to shoot in Manuel.

Seattle Photography Wkshp for Women, June 2009

Well my friends, it’s time to show you how well they shot during the workshop! I’m so excited. We’ve been meaning to do this post since June, but life got a little crazy this summer. Let’s not waste another second!

On the Saturday of the workshop, we had a handful of mamas come with their new babies. The Seattle Sistas (attendees :) ) were split up into groups of 3-5, and they were given different lighting situations to tackle with their assigned mama and baby. The focus of the practice shoot was to consider lighting and composition when shooting a mom and baby. What are the types of things we must be sensitive to with a new mom, when we consider composition specifically? This type of question and a bunch more are what we were tackling together.

On Sunday, we had a handful of families join us for a mock “family shoot”. One family had seven people! That was our beloved blog reader and friend, Kari Hale! She and Dave came with all five kids. I started our time by demonstrating different strategies I would use with a bigger sized family. And then the women were split up again and given their own assigned families to work with. One of the best parts for me was having Pascaline and Blaze participate for the first time. I felt like they were old enough to handle being one of the model families, and they did great (plus, we got some great images of the kids!).

The Seattle Sistas sent me some of their favorite results from both shoots to share with you! Some of them told me that they were holding their breath as they pushed the “SEND” button b/c the idea of having their images up here is terrifying. But I know that you will be the encouraging audience you always are! Thanks for helping me welcome the Seattle Sistas images!

First up is Katie. She took these beautiful images during the Baby Shoot on Saturday. She flew all the way from Washington DC to join us. What a pleasure to have her with us. Katie is so talented.

I just love how intimate this first one is–a precious moment between dad and baby.

Me Ra Koh Workshop Ladies Share Their Family Portraits!

And then look at the sweetness of this one! Doesn’t this image make you want to kiss baby Nathan to pieces!

Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop Results from Photo Shoots!

Katie, these two images are AMAZING! I love that you captured baby Nathan sucking on his mama’s finger b/c that is such a timely detail shot that shows us how old he is. Knowing that this time for baby Nathan is limited makes the image that much more significant. The color is also beautiful on both images. Fantastic job!

Tacey captured Valerie and baby Nathan from a completely different angle. Look at how sweet his eyes are.

Image Results from Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

And I love how tight Tacey got on this next one. We see just enough of mom’s smile to know that she adores this little guy and for this moment, he is her whole world.

Image Results from Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

You have to check out Tacey’s new blog. I loved getting to know this firecracker of a woman. Tacey had found our blog only a month before the workshop happened! She told me she had read three years of blog posts in that single month (giving her an amazing perspective on how this blog has transformed)! And now she is GOING FOR IT! So proud of you girl!

Erika had the opportunity to work with Marianne and her baby. Marianne came to our workshop a couple years ago, and it was WONDERFUL to have her back as a model with her precious baby. The first baby shot above is her husband. But look at this image Erika caught. I love so many elements of it. I love Marianne’s hair that falls over her face. I love how sweet this little guy’s face is cuddled next to his mama. I love how you can almost hear Marianne comfort him with soothing sounds. Wonderful Erika!

Image Results from Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

And one more! I can’t resist. I pulled this from Erika’s blog. :) It’s just beautiful! Same mom but hair down. Don’t you love it?!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

During the Family Shoot on Sunday, one of the challenges was to capture moments that show the personality of the different family members. I’m thinking Erika nailed it on this shot! :)

Inspiring Image Results from Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Erika did a great job of using the Thirds Principle to frame this image. I love all the empty space on the other side of us. It brings more attention to Blazey’s face. And I love how Brian is standing there, thinking about his own things. You can totally tell this is a mama and Blazey dynamic. :) Erika, thank you! I love that you caught this moment! To see more of Erika’s work, visit her blog!

And if you want a window into Pascaline’s personality, Melanie did an AMAZING job of capturing the moment! This is totally my (superhero) daughter. :) Blaze idolizes Bruce Wayne (the hidden identity of Batman). I guess Bruce Wayne will rub his chin when he’s thinking, and thus, there you have it. Melanie, you caught them both in total character–and different characters! Way to go!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Remember the tight black and white image that Tacey captured? Here is another perspective of that moment. I love that you can frame the same moment in so many different ways!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

I love all the circular motion in the above image. Melanie, you did a great job of framing this image b/c mom’s arm looks good, her hands are gentle, baby’s tucked into her, and it gives you the feeling of him being in her womb–safe and surrounded by her love. Beautiful Melanie.

Jennifer Caplinger (yesterday’s Vacation Photo Contest winner!) captured this image of Valerie’s husband and baby Nathan the next day. I loved this image because of how Jennifer chose to frame it. Zane and Valerie are some of our dearest friends, and the expression on Zane’s face is classic. I can just hear him talking to baby Nathan. And then I love how Valerie and the girls are blurred in front. What a great composition!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Here is another one of Jennifer’s images. Look at how she used composition in this image with a totally different focus.

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

She left us empty space on the right side and bottom corner. I feel like that little bit of empty space gives more motion and a rocking sense to the mama’s hands holding baby’s feet. Wonderful job Jennifer! Your composition for both images is so distinct! To see more of Jennifer’s work, check out her blog!

Kalli caught one of the sweetest images of my kids! I’m so excited to share this with you! I LOVE the expressions on both their faces. Totally their different personalities, and yet I love how this images shows us so many of their similarities from twinkly eyes to hair color. Thank you Kalli! What a gift you’ve given me and Brian!!!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

And Kalli unknowingly gave all the women of the Discovery Workshop and last year’s Seattle Workshop another gift b/c guess who showed up to be a model! Our own sweet Jenny!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Every time I look at this image that Kalli caught of Jenny, I think JOY! And Jenny’s smile is beautiful! Great job Kalli! We ALL thank you for capturing these priceless images of people we love!

Here is another image of Jenny’s little guy from a different perspective. There is a little movement in this image, and I think that softens the overall story of the image. I encouraged the women to not be quick to throw out blurry images that have moment or soft focus. Sometimes those images have a wealth of emotion that we miss b/c we’re so focused on finding the sharp images. Jennifer, thank you for sharing this image of Jenny’s little-big guy! :)

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Jennifer also captured this family image. This little guy has two big sisters to contend with, and yet his personality is so sweet. I love how Jennifer’s composition helped accentuate the relational dynamics with big sisters blurred in the background. Great storytelling Jennifer! What a moment!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Speaking of little boys, Phillipa caught this great image of Dave with Ty. We were challenging the women to get out of the box with their framing and composition, and I think Phillipa reaped the rewards in this image! I love how powerful and solid dad looks with his son. I feel like the empty brick wall accentuates that strength. What do you think?

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Going to the other side, focusing on mama and baby, look at this little one’s FACE! It’s so precious! Another great image taken by Phillipa! For those of you who have had babies, can’t you taste the binky in your own mouth remembering those days? The image below is like a “time setter” where it shows us the story of the “time” of life they are in. One that feels so overwhelming when your the parent, and yet it ends so quickly. Thank you for noticing this precious dynamic Phillipa. Great work! Phillipa is GOING FOR IT with her photography! Check out her new blog!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Here is Jenny’s sweetheart again! Look at those eyes! Erin Wheeler captured this magic!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Erin’s husband Bill has a photography business, and Erin came to the workshop to build her confidence with the camera. She sent me the sweetest email and said;

I want you to know that, thanks to you and Brian, the camera doesn’t mock me from it’s lofty position on the table anymore – 5D and I are becoming better friends every day :)

I know exactly what she means. I remember starting out and feeling like my new DSLR smirked every time I walked by it. It took a while before I had the guts to show that camera who was boss. :) Erin, I’m so excited to see what images you continue to capture! You have an awesome eye. Bill is a lucky man to have you shooting alongside him! I mean look at this image below of our family! Did Erin capture ALL our different emotions responding to Brian’s jokes or what? :) Check out Erin and Bill’s portfolio and blog!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Same crazy family, but a little more tamed and in color! :) The shot above and below were in the same five minutes that Brian and I jumped out of helping the small groups. The image below was captured by Jen Wills. I love how gentle we all look, at peace. Thank you Jen. I put these two images side by side b/c I love how dynamic the images from a family shoot can be–even within minutes of each other!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

And here is Jenny’s sweet boy again! Look at those BLUE eyes! What grabbed me about this image is how Jen blurred out a blue element in the background. That blue element brings the blue out of his eyes even more. Don’t you think? Talk about creative and smart composition. Great job Jen!!

Okay ladies, if you think the image below is great than wait till you see Jen’s new website! OMG, the first image of Jenny and her baby are AWESOME!! (Jen, I’m so excited for you! And I love that this is all bringing such joy and life to you! yeah!)

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Melisa did a great job of capturing an image that makes you feel like your looking through a window into someone’s life. For instance, look at this moment she caught between Marianne and her husband. His arms are wrapped around them, and you feel like you are looking through a window seeing this sweet, unscripted family moment.

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Here is another one of Melisa’s images. What is more precious than a baby cooing at his mama? I know, not much! This image is another great example of how Melisa clipped in enough of Valerie to know that mama is there and what baby Nathan is looking at, but the image is still full of baby’s cooing. Melisa has started her own blog. Check it out!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

These next two images were captured by Allison. The first image is so special. Look at this little guy’s pensive look. I can totally see mom and dad’s face in his expression. And I love how he seems totally at peace, resting in dad’s arms. Great job Alison.

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

This next one is so CLASSIC! I happen to know this little girl that Allison captured. She is a spirited little girl–full of confidence and personality. I love the energy that comes out of this image. Allison you captured the best expression on her face. You have no idea how much personality is in this smile you caught! Good job! Check out Allison’s new blog! (I can believe your doing it! And I’m so excited for you!)

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Here is another special example of capturing diverse images in the same couple minutes. Look at Allison’s image of baby above. Now look at Michelle’s image! What mom or dad could resist either? Even though the moment is within seconds, the look on his little face is totally different. Thanks so much Michelle for letting me use your image as an example of this! Great job!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Michelle also caught my little guy in a defining moment. This is the kind of “defining” moment that shows the world why this little guy has me wrapped around his finger. Man, oh man! I love how he’s leaning back, elbows propped, and just chilling. Blazey knows my number in a way that puts Brian to shame! Classic example…I walk out of the bathroom in the morning, and Blaze looks at me from the bottom of the stairs and gasps, “Mama, you look so beautiful today.” …see what I mean! “WRAPPED”

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Michelle, thank you for being tuned to the moment and capturing this image of Blaze! I LOVE it! As you can see, it brings up all kinds of goosebumps in me! :) Check out Michelle’s website to see more of her work!

And speaking of having your parent wrapped around your finger…guess who has Zane wrapped around her finger? :)

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Totally! Melinda caught this image of Zane and Solenne. It’s priceless. Zane’s smile is great–relaxed and present. And Solenne, can you tell she is daddy’s girl? Oh boy! Melinda, I also love how you got rid of the background and let it become a soft blur. Sometimes we make the mistake of having background that distracts from the story in our image. But Melinda, you did a great job with keeping your framing tight enough for this one and the next one of Jenny.

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Again, the background is blurred and we are totally engaged with the subjects; Jenny and her little guy. I never noticed the blue ring Jenny was wearing. I like how you clipped that in. It adds a little to mom’s personality. In fact, I noticed mom’s beautiful highlights even more with the blue ring included. This isn’t any mom, this is a hip and fun mom! Good job Melinda! To see more of Melinda’s work, check out her website too! She has some great food and travel images to see!

Amy Little flew out from Utah at the last minute to jump in the workshop. It was wonderful to have her with us. (Amy, I loved our talk that night. Thank you.) She captured two beautiful images of Valerie and baby Nathan.

This first image feels so clean to me. I know “clean” is a funny word, but it’s clean, crisp, alive. The blacks are saturated well which adds the overall crispness, and I think it also helps the emotion become that much stronger. Plus, don’t you feel like you could just reach through your screen and feel his soft hair? I love the back of his head!

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Then Amy sent me something totally different from the first image. I like how she mixed it up. This reminds me of goals I have while doing a baby shoot. I love to get those super clean, crisp images. But I also love the stories in the type of image below; where mama is blurred out, the framing is tight, maybe there isn’t even a face, but emotion is still incredibly present.

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Look at those folds in his skin! Wonderful job Amy! To see more of Amy’s work with kids, check out her website!

And last but certainly NOT least, these next two images were taken by our Running on Empty Winner, Sarah. She flew in from Idaho last minute and was so ready to be there!

The first image is of Marianne and her baby. Look at how tight the framing is on this image. Doesn’t the tight frame make it feel that much more cozy and intimate. I love how Sarah clipped Marianne’s profile and sweet kiss, but her sleeping baby fills the frame. Sarah, you must have been standing real close to get this shot. But I’m not sure. What lens did you use? Do you remember? Was it the 50mm?

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

And if you ever wondered where Ty got his blue eyes from, wonder no longer! Sarah solved it for us in a magical way! Man, look at Ty’s expression! Isn’t that priceless! And Kari, good choice on having him wear a blue shirt. That made his eyes pop even more.

Inspiring Image Results from a Me Ra Koh Photography Workshop!

Sarah, you did a fantastic job with these images. Thank you for sharing! Thank you for getting on a plane last minute and blessing our group with your presence. I’m sure I speak for a lot of us when I say I LOVED laughing with you! (Wait, you drove didn’t you?! Weren’t you the one sitting outside my house on the night of the Meet and Greet?! :) ) To see more of Sarah’s work, visit her website!

    WINNER #3

The last winner is for the Washington DC, Running On Empty Contest! As many of you know, we save ONE spot in every workshop for a mom Running On Empty. Every workshop, we invite people to nominate their friends, wives, sisters, daughters, themselves. The winner is given the last seat to the workshop at no expense. Brian and I don’t pick the winner. This would be way to hard. Instead, we host the opportunity. The winner is often picked by former winners, and or a group of select women. Without further delay, the winner to the upcoming DC workshop is AILEEN REILLY!

    Below is Aileen’s heartfelt submission;

My favorite part of photography is the honesty – the raw emotions, the unguarded glances, the moments. I’m an observer. I see life in pictures – a snapshot here, a snapshot there. I have been carrying a camera for as long as I can remember, at least since I was 10, and that gives me 30 years of capturing life. Photography is my passion. It is something I have always done, and like life once you have children, I can’t truly recall a time when I didn’t have a camera. It is just what I do. I am an artist and a photographer. People invite me into their homes and to their special occasions, to see their lives, to peer into their eyes and to see a part of their souls. The least I can do is share a part of myself as well.

I grew up without knowing my father. When I was six, he signed off on having any legal rights to me as a father. With the stroke of a judge’s pen, I was fatherless. To a little girl, this was the ultimate rejection. But I’m a survivor, and life goes on. I grew up and went on to graduate from law school. I took a job as a criminal prosecutor, my dream job. I love criminal law. Much like photography and capturing raw moments, in criminal law I was able to see humanity from one extreme to another. Eventually I settled into the S * x u a l Assault Unit – r a p e cases, i n c 3 s t, domestic violence r a p e, etc. The work was emotionally challenging, but there is no greater satisfaction than providing a moment of justice for a rape survivor. I treasure every “Thank You,” and every survivor remains in my heart to this day.

Two years ago (ten years after my job as a criminal prosecutor ended), my mom told me that my father never knew his father either (father-issues are a continuing theme in my life). His mother (my grandmother) was raped by a stranger in the park at the age of 16. She chose to keep the baby (my father). The rapist was never captured. I never knew any of this. That rapist’s granddaughter grew up to prosecute rapists. Imagine that. Fate, Divine Providence, Karma – call it what you will. It is that same fate that I believe has brought your wonderful conference to DC at a time when I need it the most.

I left my job as a criminal prosecutor and went on to have children. I now have four – three girls (9, 8, and 6) and one boy (2 ½). I gave up my law career, and I stay home full time with them, struggling to ground them spiritually, to educate them, and at the same time, trying not to lose myself in the process

At New Years this year, I made myself a list. Not a resolution list – I don’t really do those. Rather, it was a list of four specific areas of my life I wanted to focus on and my goals for each of those areas. Of course, photography was one of those areas. My goals are to continue developing my skills, take the camera off “auto,” study and teach myself exposure, lighting, proper composition, reading histograms, with an eye toward 2010 when I plan to go pro with my skills. In my notes, I listed “MeRa Workshop – 2010?” I’m in Washington, DC (though formerly I lived in Seattle) and I knew that to attend one of your West Coast workshops would be a great expense to us, but also a great creative opportunity for me. I wanted to plan for it.

Unfortunately, shortly after writing my list of goals, unemployment hit our family. My husband lost his job, along with too many in the rest of our country. Our situation is not unique, and I know this. I can look back and see what happened, but I didn’t realize while I was in the throes. As my husband worked wholeheartedly to find a new job, he needed constant access to our laptop. However, the laptop was also the valve for my creativity. That’s where my writing was done, that’s where I viewed all the photos I’d taken and where I edited them, that’s where I wrote my blog, that’s where I posted photos for others to see and to receive feedback. As a SAHM, too often, that’s where I interacted with other adults.

Slowly, I stopped picking up my camera. It was not a conscious decision, it just happened. I stopped writing. For someone whose camera is virtually a third arm, this was debilitating. I would look at my camera and think about picking her up, but I didn’t see the point. She became unknown to me, a relationship that had lost its communication and I didn’t know how to bridge that gap. My creative energy suffered, and I suffered. Looking back, I can see I was slowly losing part of myself.

And then an angel appeared. Circumstances put me in touch with an acquaintance with a similar love of photography. This acquaintance would not have been made otherwise; I have no doubt that it was destined to occur. An angel saw me suffering and wanted to put me back on the right track. It worked. I saw my acquaintance (now friend) taking great photos and wanted to share my work too. It reminded me that I take great photos too. Slowly, I picked up my camera again. I started shooting in full manual and I was back on track. I started staying up very late so I could view my photos and so I could go back to interacting with my on-line photog community. I was rejuvenated. I was breathing again, and I realized how essential photography is to my life – to me being me.

And then, the unbelievable happened. On June 17th, you announced your next workshop would be in Washington, DC. Imagine! My stars were aligning. On that very same day, my husband received a job offer. No kidding. It was destiny. Can it get any better? I’m going! Yay! But, reality set in – We are a family of six who has been living without income for 7 months. We have exhausted our savings. We have used credit cards in circumstances we normally would not have. We have borrowed from family. And then borrowed more. Is that possible? I am so grateful we have such a generous and giving extended family. Without them, we would have been out on the streets, but it may take years to repay.

Reality set in: No, I would not be attending MeRa’s Workshop. That day, I cried. A lot. I don’t know what got into me, because I’m not really a crier. I’ve been through a lot in my life, and I think I’ve just learned to stop it all up. But that day, I cried. I hid my tears from my family. I took two showers that day so I could be alone with the tears streaming down my face.

MeRa, I am Running on Empty. I feel beaten down and exhausted. This year has pushed and stretched me in ways I could not have foreseen. Sometimes I feel like I’m crawling out of my skin. It’s hard for me to admit this. There is a part of me that thinks, It’s life; you get through. I’ve always gotten through. But, this time, I’m asking for help. I’ve been taking care of others for 10 years now. I need a break before I find myself broken again, losing myself. I need that weekend – the skills, the encouragement, the confidence-building, the time to myself. And just as that rapist’s granddaughter grew up to prosecute rapists, I believe that fate has sent you to my door for a reason.

Thank you for considering me for the Running On Empty gift. I know every mom nominated is worthy. Thank you for considering me.

    Aileen
    6reillys (at) gmail (dot) com
PS. I have to apologize for the multiple submissions if they ever post – I believe it was the words describing my prosecution background that got caught up in the spam filter.

Aileen, Brian and I are excited to meet you. What a honor to have you join the DC group. You have not given up, and I’m so excited for you to come and be refreshed, inspired and discover a new support group. We are counting the days!

Please join me in congratulating this beautiful woman, along with the other contest winners!

And the BIGGEST thank you to all our blog readers. I hope you never underestimate how much I appreciate you and your involvement on this blog. Your contributions, comments, emails to me, all of it, makes this blog what it is.

    xoxo, Me Ra

Michelle Riddle, Santa Cruz Portrait Photographer

Michelle was in our Sonoma CONFIDENCE Workshop a couple years ago, and I’ve had the privilege of staying in touch with her. She is capturing some BEAUTIFUL images! And her business is growing right alongside her sweet family.

You’ll love this interview b/c Michelle shares what camera gear she used when she first started out, and she’ll also share a myriad of different workshops and photographers she has gleamed from. Her experiences are so rich! Feel free to ask Michelle anything else in the comments for today’s post. If you’d like to be featured on the blog, see below for directions on what to do!

Interview with Michelle Riddle

1. When did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people and putting up a website?

Michelle: Like so many other moms out there, my interest in photography started soon after I had my first child almost seven years ago. I wanted to capture every moment, making sure I did not miss a thing. My point and shoot digital camera was not cutting it for me. I went to the camera store and bought a Nikon film SLR. I took a lot of photos but nothing too exciting. A few months after I had my second child, I came across Tara Whitney’s blog. In her work, I saw that there was another way to capture your children that was different than a snapshot or posed “sears” type photo. It was after viewing her work for a few months that made me want to go purchase a DSLR and learn everything I could to take better photos of my kids.

In December 2007, after slowly learning more and more and getting a little more confident, I was lucky enough to upgrade to the D300. Days after getting it, I felt like I needed to do something to help me figure out if I could really be do something with this photography passion of mine. I googled “photo workshop for moms” and found the information for the Sonoma CONFIDENCE workshop with Me Ra and Brian. It had just been released a few weeks earlier. I knew right then it was meant for me to go to the workshop since it was in driving distance. I asked my wonderful husband who had just days earlier bought me the D300 and he said yes!

Before going to the CONFIDENCE workshop, I did not think I could call myself a photographer until I knew “everything” there was to know about photography. I never considered myself to be artistic, I just liked taking pictures and did not ever think I could actually get paid to do it. I often thought of my favorite shots as “accidents” and worried that maybe I could not recreate that magic if I was getting paid to do it. Before the workshop I did not think that I had anything unique to offer. After the workshop I realized that each person has a unique eye and if someone else sees beauty in what I created then maybe I could someday have a business.

While at the CONFIDENCE workshop, I not only learned lots of photography stuff, I learned much more about myself, my fears, my dreams, my goals and most importantly, my story. Me Ra and Brian do not just teach about aperture, shutter speed and ISO, they really create an environment that allows women to open up and think in a way that just is not always possible in the reality of life as a mom. Lack of confidence is something that seems to be a constant theme, and it was so refreshing to be in a room with women who felt exactly how I felt.

Lucky for me, our workshop was smaller which gave us all a great opportunity to really get to know one another. As much as I learned at the Sonoma CONFIDENCE workshop, it is the connections I made that weekend that keep me going when I think about giving up. I had no idea that some of the women I met that weekend would turn out to be some of my greatest friends and supporters. I am lucky enough to live within driving distance of a few of them and look forward to when we can get together and catch up in person . It is so refreshing to know that I have a handful of women a phone call or email away who always know the right thing to say and are there to listen and support me.

Now a year and half after the workshop, I am slowly getting a little more comfortable calling myself a photographer. Even with other workshops I attended and all the learning and practicing I had done, I do not think I ever would have had the confidence to make the leap to starting a business if it had not been for the workshop with Me Ra and Brian.

2. What inspires your photography?

Michelle: My kids really inspire me.

Michelle Riddle, Santa Cruz Portrait Photographer

I want to capture every special moment of their lives, and love that I have the opportunity to do that for other people. I want the photos I take to be able to tell a story. When a mom looks back at a photo I took of her family years from now, I want her to be able to remember the way her daughter giggled and smelled or the way her son did a funny little smirk or the way her baby held onto her hair for comfort. I love how in a short amount of time you can get to know a family and capture the dynamics that make them who they are.

3. What are the classes/workshops/DVDs that you’ve watched to teach yourself photography? Were they helpful?

Michelle: Me Ra’s CONFIDENCE Workshop – This is the first workshop I attended and it was exactly what I needed. At this workshop, I learned lots of technical things that were not clicking for me before that. Me Ra and Brian are so great at making the technical stuff make sense. More importantly though, they taught me that every eye is unique and that if I loved photography I should follow my dream. I have both of their DVD’s ( Refuse to Say Cheese and Beyond the Green Box ) and continue to watch them when I need inspiration or need a little refresher on some of the basics.

Jay Reilly- I am a big fan of Jays work and it was so great to be able to watch him shoot and learn from him. One of the things I learned from watching him is that with kids you have to keep moving, changing what they are doing so they don’t get bored. Which goes along with something else..if what you’re doing is not working, move on. I used to worry that if I stopped shooting at a certain pose or location the clients would think I would not know what I was doing, now I realize that I am the one in charge and that the clients expect me to do what works.

Melissa Koehler- I met Melissa when I was down in San Diego for Jays workshop. I was a fan of her work and a friend and I contacted her to see if we could take her to lunch. That in itself taught me that so many great photographers are willing to answer questions and share their knowledge. After that we arranged for her to come do a workshop which was wonderful. It was great to watch her shoot and have her share her whole process of what she does with images after she takes them. She was awesome and it was so great taking shop with her

The Light Workshop- This was a great online workshop that got me much more comfortable shooting in the sun. I had a tendency to look for the shade at various locations because I was scared of the sun. After the workshop, learning some great techniques, I realized I am not a vampire and do not have to shy away from the sun. Working with it can create some beautiful images.

4. Can you tell us a fun back story behind this GREAT Senior photo!

Michelle: I did a shoot of 5 high school seniors, a BFF shoot as I like to call it. It was so fun and much easier to get the girls to loosen up and have some fun. As I was taking some photos of the 5 of them, I looked down, and loved that with just their pants, shoes and they way they stood, I could see so much of their personalities that I had gotten to know during the shoot. It is shots like this that remind me to always look for the details that make a person who they are.

5. What about this dynamic Family Portrait shot?

Michelle: This shot is from one of my favorite family sessions I have ever done. People always look at this shoot on my blog and tell me they want photos just like it. What made this shoot so great was that they truly were just being themselves. Mom was not super stressed out about matching clothes and that “perfect” shot, which made it so much easier to just capture them being themselves.

6. What is the best and toughest part about doing this while being a mom and wife at the same time?

Michelle: The best part is that I am able to make sure I do not get lost in mom land and forget who I am and what my interests are. The toughest part is time, or lack of it. My husband is great about watching the kids when I go to shoots, but it is finding time to do all the other stuff that is hard. I have 3 kids. Eli is almost 7, Zoe is 5 and Ari is 2..so needless to say, my days are a bit crazy. I have a million ideas in my head of things I want to try, promotions I want do, business stuff that has to get done. Most days, I am trying to be a mom, a wife, clean the house, do the laundry, pay the bills etc.,while also trying to be a photographer. At the end of many days, I feel like I was not good at anything and everything was just getting 20% of me. I have to be better at carving out work time so that I am not doing it among all the other mom/wife duties.

7. What type of camera equipment did you have when you first started shooting portraits? And what have you added to your camera bag since then?

Michelle: I started with the Nikon D70s and a cheap kit lens and upgraded to the D300 two and a half years ago. The first lens I got was the 50mm 1.8 and truly believe that lens was a huge help in helping me get a better understanding of the technical stuff, especially aperture. That lens helped me understand what a huge role Depth Of Field played in taking pictures that went beyond the average snapshot. I also have the 85mm 1.8 which is a beautiful lens. I have the Tamaron 17-50 which I get a lot of use out of. I find myself shooting ALOT in the 17-20 range. I love that wide kind of distorted look. I think my next lens will be a wide angle prime lens. I just recently got the 80-200 which I am excited to play with some more. I wanted that one to use for family photos so I could get far enough away to shoot at 2.8 and get a nice family in focus with a beautiful blurry background.

Michelle: I love this photo in particular. I know it is sometimes hard for dads to loosen up and just be themselves with a camera on them, but this dad had no problem. It was like he didn’t even know I was there, and I was able to capture a moment that warms my heart every time I look at it.

8. What is one piece of advice you’d give to newbie’s?

Michelle: That’s a hard one, I still consider myself a newbie. I guess I would say to make sure you have a great support system. Find other photographers who are at the same spot as you our further along. As great as workshops are, there is definitely something to be said for having a group of friends that you can go practice with, bounce ideas off of each other and just lean on when you need it.

9. Do you have a website that we can share with our blog readers?

Michelle : Absolutely! www.michelleriddlephoto.com

But if you think of another question I didn’t touch on, post it in today’s blog!

**Please note; the Sony links temporarily don’t work.  Please CLICK HERE to see What’s in a Camera Bag for a Beginner?!

I have some really fun news to share this morning!

Sony invited me to write a blog post for their official Sony Style blog on the topic of what a beginner’s camera bag should have. The Sony Style blog…not just the Digital Imaging department, but the whole Sony Style umbrella blog…I was pretty excited! It is a huge honor, and I had a blast doing it!

Many of you have asked me what type of camera gear a beginner should have. If you haven’t invested in a camera or lens before, this post is for YOU! I talk about what gear I use to capture images like this (doesn’t he look sad!);

Sony Style Blog post

In the midst of working on this piece, I got a fantastic email from one of our wonderful blog readers (yes, I read them all! :) Sometimes I get over 100 a day, and even though I can’t respond to everyone I still love hearing from you!). I had to share this email in particular b/c her enthusiasm will tickle you too! I know a lot of you will relate to the freedom and excitement she’s feeling!

Hi Me Ra!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU. I’ve been reading your blog for awhile, and have been growing more and more in love with photography since having a baby girl about 16 months ago. I decided I might like to pursue it further, but knew I wanted a better camera (I just had a decent point & shoot). Then, I found out I was pregnant, which is always the perfect excuse to get a better camera, right? Anyway, I decided to get the Sony a330…seriously just based on your reviews and recommendations. I figured that your photos are amazing, and if you are using a Sony, then Sony must be amazing too. I just got it today and I LOVE it. I am so glad I followed your advice…I did get 3 different Sony lenses, and one of them goes down to a 1.8 aperture. Oh my gosh – I am thrilled! I love the blurry background!!

So, I know that I’m still a novice, but I’m so impressed with my photos that I just randomly took today with my new camera. No special photo shoot or anything…just shots of my girl. And, I barely did any editing on them. If you want to check them out, they are here: http://viewpointimages.wordpress.com/2009/08/11/first-pictures/.

THANK YOU!!!
Kellie O’Brien
www.viewpointimages.com

Check out Kellie’s photos by following her blog links! This is her first DSLR camera. Before the Sony a330, she only had a point and shoot camera. She took the Sony Alpha 330 right out of the box, put the slick sliding scale to use for the lowest aperture, and captured those sweet photos! I’m so FREAKING EXCITED for her! A big congrats Kellie! Girl, you are doing GREAT!!!
