I have to be honest, Brian and I were a little nervous when it came to preparing for the Orange County CONFIDENCE Photography Wkshp. Our last photography workshop was in January. Since January, a whole lot of stuff has happened. We’ve been half way around the world and gripped by the Dengue fever. I remember our last week in Thailand. I was so exhausted from the fevering, and I asked Brian if he thought I would be ready for the OC Workshop. I wanted to make sure we honored our commitment to all the women who were investing their precious time and dollars in us. We decided to take life one day at a time, and if we needed to reschedule we could. But when last Saturday morning came around, can I just say that I was so THRILLED to walk in and start our OC CONFIDENCE wkshp! I was so ready, so charged, so excited, and Brian was right behind me! I can’t explain it, maybe the women will be able to articulate better than I can, but it was the most AMAZING weekend together. These women came from Ohio, Chicago, WA and all over CA. They stepped up to the plate of gaining CONFIDENCE and hit a home run!
Here are some fun Behind the Scenes shots of the women working, risking, laughing, exploring and stepping out of their comfort zone to build their CONFIDENCE!
Saturday’s Baby Shoot!
Five sweet babies came with their mamas!
It was wonderful to meet our Running on Empty Winner, Paige (in the sweater), and watch her Confidence grow leaps and bounds! (Paige, I was serious when I said that I can’t wait to see where life takes you and your gift!)
Sometimes I have the ladies do photo exercises that requires them to take turns being in front of the camera. Being in front of the camera is one of the most UNCOMFORTABLE places, when you are used to taking all the photos. But there were wonderful treasures to be found in the exercise, and these women found them!
On Sunday, we went to Huntington Beach Pier and did several family shoots.
No matter what camera brand or model you have, Brian is like this walking—all knowing camera manual! I don’t think he’s ever not found the answer to someone’s camera question—and he’s an AWESOME teacher! He amazes me!
These two beautiful ladies are Sony shooters! We had to get a special group Sony shot! (Thanks for this awesome photo Jess! xoxo)
Here is the BIG group shot!
And then Brian got goofy. But can you blame him? He’d been with over 20 women ALL weekend! Can you find Brian and see what he’s doing?
Part II –Brian ditches the camera!
Goodness ladies! Look at Brian’s FACE! (He feels pretty great about having this photo to prove how funny you thought he was.)
To all our OC Confidence ladies,
This was the most AMAZING weekend! Brian and I loved every minute with each of you. Whether you were a beginner or advanced, you all dove in and incredible growth came from it! But the best part, we made lifetime friends. And to think that we gained CONFIDENCE in our photography abilities too! We couldn’t have hoped for more! Brian and I love you all! Make sure you register for the Soarority Forum and the SOARority FB Group page so we can all keep growing together!
I also want to thank our volunteer models! It was wonderful to meet so many new faces and reunite with past workshop attendees! Thank you for being our workshop guinea pigs. You ladies are the BEST!
But wait! We want to thank Roxanne from Pixel2Canvas too! She has always supported our CONFIDENCE Workshops with awesome door prizes and gift certificates. This time, she finally got to be an attendee, and she hosted our Meet and Greet at her beautiful home! Thank you so much Roxie! Brian and I love you!
Who attends our CONFIDENCE Workshops? Are you a good fit?
Well, at the OC workshop we had women of ALL levels. Some women were already booking clients and charging money. Some women were stay at home moms and wanted to capture their kids and not feel like their photos were always “Happy Accidents”. A couple women didn’t even have a camera yet. Some had kids in college, some had babies, some were single, some in between. But each of the women came with the same thing. They came with expectation, and they left changed. Whether it was the woman who knew nothing about her camera and left shooting in Manual or the stay at home mom who realized it was okay to pursue something that she enjoys…transformations happened everywhere—transformations that humble me b/c these women can only get what they put into it…and they each put everything into it.
If you are in Seattle or New York area, we still have a few spots left in the CONFIDENCE Workshops for May! This is an awesome Mother’s Day present if you are in desperate need of an inspiring weekend with girlfriends. Need help convincing your husband, you MUST read these Top 12 Reasons that two husbands wrote—the comments are HILARIOUS! What will you gain besides CONFIDENCE?…I wish I could describe it, but every time each woman walks away with such an amazing, magical gift that can only happen when women come together! We’re just fresh from our first workshop since Thailand. What an AMAZING group of ladies! Truly blessed to be with all of you. And can you believe it? We’ve got two more coming right up!
Our upcoming New York area CONFIDENCE Photography Workshop is almost SOLD OUT! The weekend is May 29-30. We are so excited! We LOVE the east coast! The women have already started emailing the group their stories, why they are coming, what they hope to get out of the weekend, their fears, insecurities and enthusiasm. Brian and I are loving reading their stories. It’s so funny, we even have official, self-proclaimed ‘blogstalkers’! Looking forward to meeting you all! Whether these women live in Washington DC, Chicago, San Diego, Seattle or Minneapolis, they are excited and ready to take their creativity and photography skills to the next level. (Yes, they are nervous before the workshop, but they never let that nervousness stand in their way. And their courage brings beautiful results.)
Do you know a mom who needs this kind of group and weekend getaway? Do you know a mom Running on Empty? If so, nominate her today. Let’s turn her day around and let her know we are rooting for her!
If you know a MOM who is;
A. Running on Empty
B. Lives near Jersey City, NJ or has mileage to spend
C. Can arrange for a sitter and get the weekend free, starting Friday (May 28th for Meet & Greet night all the way through Sunday night (May 30th. Yep, that’s right, Memorial weekend. You’ll still catch the kids at home one day of the long weekend.)
D. Most importantly, has a PASSION for photography
Nominate her TODAY! Nominations must be in by Thursday night, 4/29 (two days from now at 6pm PST).
We will announce the winner in time for her to jump in and make all the arrangements. So make sure your nominations are all in by Thursday at 6pm PST. If you are not familiar with this contest, read below and see what it’s all about! Moms are one of the most beautiful parts of creation. This contest is all about acknowledging their beauty, even when they are Running on Empty.
Here’s how it works!
In honor of how wonderful moms are and all that they do and give, Brian and I keep one spot reserved in every workshop for a special mom like YOU! That’s right, you (or she) will get a free pass to the upcoming CONFIDENCE Workshop in the New York area! (Please note, we don’t provide room/board and travel.)
To nominate a mom, you must post a comment telling us about the mom who you think deserves a big break in life! If you are a mom, you’re probably laughing because we ALL deserve a serious break. But the moms we’re looking for are the ones who have had a ridiculous amount of stress in their life whether from trauma or things just not going her way this year. She is a mom in your life that needs a serious blessing to come her way. She needs a serious surprise that gives her empty tank some fuel. If she is a woman that has miscarried, she is still a mom in my mind b/c I know her heart became a mother’s heart the moment she found out she was pregnant. Don’t hesitate to nominate her too.
I’m proud to say that our previous winners stepped out on a limb and nominated themselves. Take courage in them and feel free to nominate yourself if you know you need a serious break. Who knows, you may have your house remodeled by Oprah!
We’ll collect all the nominees, have a committee of wonderful moms vote, and then announce the winner in the next two weeks!
Nominate her today and turn her day around! Oh, wait! Don’t forget to let her know you’ve nominated her too! If I was a mom nominated I’d love to know my friends were thinking of me whether I won or not! Deadline for ALL nominations is Thursday, April 29th at 6pm PST. Nominations MUST be posted as a comment on this blog post. Either your email or the nominees email MUST be included on the blog post to qualify. Nominations emailed or posted on other blog posts may be overlooked. Please post all nominees here. Thanks!

Did you see the Balancing Act on Lifetime this morning? Did you not love the Mother/Daughter team who won? The daughter’s story and what she has endured is so amazing. And how did I do for that 5 minute spotlight? Not to bad for coming out of the Dengue Fever, huh!
The purpose of today’s feature spot was for me highlight the Mother’s Day HOT items: the (sexy) Copper Brown Sony Alpha 330 DSLR camera bundled with the instructional Kids in Focus DVD. See the trailer HERE! If you remember last summer’s Behind the Scenes photos (CLICK HERE to see more)…
…Sony had invited us to reshoot different parts of our Refuse to Say Cheese/Beyond the Green Box DVDs, so they could include the revised version with their new DSLR cameras in retail stores! Isn’t that insane? I still can’t believe all this happened!
If you missed this morning’s show, Lifetime will be airing it again on May 7th at 7am PST/EST. So you know what…Definitely, Don’t miss it!
I had a bunch of Behind the Scenes photos emailed to me. I thought I’d share them with you too. Taping that show was such a blast! I can’t thank Lifetime, The Balancing Act and Sony enough for giving me the opportunity to join them!
Getting Make Up Ready
Going over notes and images with the Producer.
Walk through on set.

And I don’t know about you, but I think this monitor should be replaced. Look at how much wider we look! Not cool.
It sounds like I’ll be getting the segment to put on our site soon. If you are out of country, stay tuned!
And most of all, thanks for all your support! As I’ve said before, we’ve got a dream to have our own TV show. This 5 min. piece helps me get more practice and gets us one step closer to that dream. I appreciate you all praying for us, believing in me, sending me encouraging emails. I appreciate all of you…more than I can say.
Love you all!
Me Ra
p.s. Tomorrow I’m going to post a Sneak Peak from the AWESOME time we had in Orange County at our photography wkshp. this last weekend—building CONFIDENCE!! Seattle and New York CONFIDENCE Wkshps are coming in May! Woo-hoo!!
Gina is our Amazing Mom feature today! Step back in time with me to about two years ago. On February 15th, 2008, I posted the Top Five Finalists for the L-O-V-E themed Photo Contest. One of the finalists was Gina Oh. This was her adorable finalist photo!
Well friends, Gina didn’t win the L-O-V-E Photo Contest, but she didn’t let that stop her. This woman is going to blow your mind! Prepare to FREAK OUT when you see where Gina and her photography is today—only two years later! Holy smoke, if ever a woman was inspiring, it’s Gina! Check out her latest images!
I loved the setting and light on both of these!
A little different then her Photo Contest submission, huh!
Gina and I connected via email, and she has generously offered her time to tell us her story through this Amazing Mom Feature Interview.
1.Gina, when did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people?
I started my business about 6 months ago. It was at this point that I became somewhat confident enough to do so. I finally had the confidence to produce good quality pictures regardless of the lighting situation.
2.What inspires your photography?
My children.
I was NEVER interested in photography until my children were born.
Also, newborns, I don’t think I will ever tire of shooting newborns.
I see such beauty, innocence, hope, it is totally inspiring to me. I see God’s handiwork in each baby and it never ceases to amaze me.
3.What inspires you as a person, artist?
Recently, I moved to the Central Coast of California and it’s so beautiful here that one would be crazy not to be inspired by the beach. When I am standing at the edge of the water and watching the sun set, I take a deep breath and try to take it all in. It is just an unbelievable feeling. I feel very spiritual at the beach, especially at night. Nature, nature inspires me as an artist. I love the urban work that many photographers do, but when I take children out into nature, I am overjoyed with happiness.
4.What made you decide to do photography as more than a hobby? What was your turning point?
I was at a point where I was so passionate about photography that not picking up my camera several times a week was just really hard. My kids were just tired of having a camera pointed to their face, so I had started to practice on my friends’ children. I started a personal blog and people kept on commenting on how they liked my work. So I thought, why not give it a try?
Last February, I was a finalist your photo contest. The theme was love. Looking back, the photo was not technically sound by any means. I would’ve done many things differently had I taken the shot today. However, that picture still makes me smile, every time I see it.
I realize now that capturing “the moment” is very special, but to be paid, you better know what you are doing. So I started studying and practicing, day and night. When I realized that I was able to consistently produce images that I liked, I decided to charge.
5.What are the classes/workshops/DVDs you’ve watched to teach yourself photography? Were they helpful?
I first took an online class by “Better Photos” from a very reputable teacher, but I was still lost. It was at this time that I started to look on the internet for DVDs that could help me improve my photography. I somehow stumbled on “Refuse to Say Cheese” and bought it immediately. When I received the package, I gave up on dinner, put out a bowl of cereal for the kids and watched it from beginning to end. Then, I immediately put myself on the waiting list for “Beyond the Green Box”, I think it was still in production at this time. I did almost every single one of those exercises on those DVDs and your daily blog. When recipes were handed out, you bet I wrote those numbers down and did that exercise. I took those recipes very seriously. Me Ra, I don’t think you ever knew how much that impacted me. As strange as the “Professor” was, his quirky explanations helped me put the exposure triangle together in my head. I still think it’s hilarious that I would sit there and memorize those numbers, but you have to start somewhere, right? Now, it all comes to me so easily, but it wasn’t always like that. After that, I attended the Secret Workshop with Cheryl Muhr, the Baby as Art Workshop with Carrie Sandoval & Britt Woodall and The Life as Art Workshop with Nichole Van. All workshops were wonderful for different reasons.
(I have to jump in here. This is Me Ra. One of the BEST ways to improve your photography is by taking a workshop. Just this weekend we had the MOST amazing weekend of growth with 20 women in Orange County. These women are going to sky rocket! Whether you take one of our CONFIDENCE workshops or one of the ones mentioned above, you will be blown away at how fast your photography and confidence improve. Brian and I did a handful of workshops when we first started, and these investments jump started us like crazy! There is a lot of talk about photographers doing workshops to early in their career and attendees being very frustrated with how much money they spent on the workshop. I encourage you to go by word of mouth. I don’t know personally know the ladies/workshops Gina mentions, but I’ve taken a few minutes to look at their workshop websites. All three look inspiring. So go for it ladies! Ask around, do some research, and then invest in yourself. You want be disappointed!)
6.What is one or two pieces marketing/self-promotion ideas that you can give our newbies? (something you did to get your name out there)
I have found that baby announcements are a great way to advertise. It is a high quality folded press printed card. I offer these to my newborn clients and it has my logo and website on the back. I am also the class historian at my daughter’s school. I give the parents free photos from their various field trips and that has generated some business for me as well. Other than that, it’s mostly word of mouth.
7.What was your first “paid” shoot like? How did you feel on the way, during and after?
It was a newborn session and it was awful. The baby cried the entire time and I was just not able to achieve a single decent image. I was about to give up, but told myself that I was going to give it one more try. I told the mom to come back the next day to try again. He wasn’t the perfect baby, but much better than the day before. The first paid shoot is definitely not easy, but with practice, it does get better and better.
Looking back, I thought I was “ready”, but perhaps I wasn’t. Now, I rarely get butterflies in my stomach.
It took LOTS and LOTS of practice, you must practice, that’s the only way to know you’re camera. (Have I emphasized “practice” enough?)
8.What is the best and toughest part about doing photography while being a mom and wife at the same time?
Toughest: the never-ending juggling of time. It is crazy, isn’t it? I wasn’t very good at it last year so I had to re-evaluate my situation this year, I have cut back tremendously, and I am ok with this. My youngest is two now and I feel that they are only this age once and so my photography business is going to have to take somewhat of a back seat. This year, I only take one client a month and a handful of commercial work. I am happy with this decision and it works for our family in this moment in time.
Best: In this month’s issue of Baby Couture magazine, there is a full page ad with an image that I photographed. I showed it to my husband and he took the magazine from me and looked at it and read the article like he was really interested. (He’s your typical Asian guy, people, not one to express much emotion). Anyways, whether it was just playing it up or not, I don’t know, but he was like, “Wow, you’re famous now, I’m so proud of you, yada yada yada…” and I know a part of him was joking, but I also know that when he hugged me, a part of him was really proud. When he first bought me my used Nikon D70s, it was only supposed to be a hobby. Yet, as I have I dived deeper and deeper, he’s supported me even more.
When holidays come around, his questions is always the same, “What lens is it this time, honey?” Haha, it always makes me laugh. Knowing that he encourages and supports my life outside being a SAHM has been a wonderful discovery for me.
9. Is there one more piece of advice you’d give to newbies?
I feel like it is important to take time to find out what your style is, what you like to photograph. I tried all kinds of photography before settling down to newborns, children and commercial work.
I did maternity, engagement sessions, seniors, 2nd shot a wedding, editorial, still life, etc. It took my a good couple of years before I realized what I really liked. Having said that, there is no law saying that you have to stick to that genre forever. This goes for editing too. Right now, my work has a vintage feel.
I might not like this look next year and it’s ok. However, you must update your blog or website so that your client knows what look they are getting. So how do you discover your “style”? PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!
Dearest Gina, Thank you so much for sharing your story with all of us. It’s so inspiring to see what you’ve done in two years time. I think so many of us struggle with wanting our images to improve overnight. And while digital photography has sped up the process, anything we are passionate about learning takes practice. And your images and business are proof of how rewarding the practice can be. You are an inspiration dear. You are an Amazing Mom! One of these days, we’ve got to meet in person!
Much love, Me Ra

Oh! I almost forgot! Tune into Lifetime’s Balancing Act tomorrow morning to see the feature spot I did with them!
Brian and I were honored to have been invited to Grace Ormonde’s World Book Tour. We drove up to Vancouver BC on Wednesday to celebrate with Grace, other friends and amazing wedding vendors in the area. The book’s title is…“being in love never goes out of style”. Don’t you love that title?! Not only is it a great title, but the book is BIG and BEAUTIFUL!
A dear friend, Mike Colon (an amazing wedding photographer that you must check out) introduced us to Grace over four years ago! I can’t believe how fast time goes. We ran a full page ad with Grace Ormonde’s, highly acclaimed, Wedding Style, magazine. Combining our efforts and the help of her market reach, we made a place for our business in the high end wedding market. If you love wedding magazines, you will LOVE Wedding Style magazine.
Relationships of continuum are everything when the industry is changing and turning over so quickly. In the last four years, Grace has given us the honor of publishing our wedding work and also featured me and Brian as “Masters of Their Craft”. But in all this time, we have never met Grace in person. The internet world can almost cause you to forget about the fact that you have yet to be in person together. Thus, it was wonderful to finally be together Wednesday night and congratulate Grace in person! It was like a sweet reunion.
Grace is an amazing woman. She has empowered me on so many levels. Just being a visionary woman with big dreams, never giving up on her vision, and in the midst of it all—creating a platform for others to stand on—all these amazing accomplishments inspire me to keep going for all the big dreams I hold inside.
Brian and I wish Grace Ormonde all the BEST with this new, beautiful book! Grace does everything with pristine attention to detail and incredible style. I’m sure this book will be a HUGE hit! If you know a bride to be, I can’t think of a better gift!
xoxo,
Me Ra
p.s. Have a GREAT weekend! We are headed to Orange County today for the CONFIDENCE Wkshp in Huntington Beach! Brian and I are so excited to meet the ladies tonight at our Meet and Greet! It’s already been a doozy of a day! Brian’s flight headed out. I parked the car and realized I had three suitcases to roll (yes, THREE, workshops require us to bring lots of goodies) but only two hands. I tried stacking the suitcases, one fell off, and alas, the suitcase broke open and refuses to lock. So I held back tears, bagged the puppy and life goes on. Now to find one of those massage bars!
Kari of MamaBloo has a new Photo Tale for April! I don’t know about you, but I LOVE her Photo Tales! Today, she’s talking about the realities of lighting in her home. I couldn’t help but think that the timing of this Photo Tale was great with two earlier posts I wrote this month on lighting; How to Capture Drama in Your Photos and Seeing Beyond the Light. A third Photo Tip post on lighting for April is crazy fun! Enjoy friends! And thank you Kari! We love you MamaBloo!
_________
Our house has the world’s worse lighting. And it is not for lack of trying. For a preschool assignment Ty had to count the windows in the house. He had to get Izzy’s help because the total number of windows was 123. That’s right. 123 panes of glass in our house. Way too high for a 4 year old to count all by himself.
Now, add 27 recessed “pot” lights in our living room alone and you would think that every day would be some sort of blaze of glory… or something equally poetic. But, it really isn’t. It’s not even a little limerick of lighting.
So, I went on a lighting mission. I set out to find the best lighting in my house and to take a decent picture without my flash — with mostly natural light and very minimal labor in post process. My aperture on my camera only goes down to a 3.5 so I knew this was going to require some creative light locating.
First stop, the bright window near the kitchen. This window is huge and has frosted glass to shield us from the garbage cans and gravel walkway right outside. But, at mid-morning tons of light streams through it. And on Sunday, my 1 year old was hanging out there. So, I grabbed my camera. The problem is that because the light was so intense and concentrated in a dark room with dark wood floors, the shadows made Emme look like a toddler version of the ying-yang symbol.
Finally, in post process I pulled out all the saturation and lowered the contrast to combat the shadows. And I ended up liking the dramatic effect. But, alas, poor kitchen window, you did not distinguish yourself as the best lighting winner. The search continues. (And, yes, she is wearing leg warmers. We are so 80’s around here. )
Off to the landing outside our master bedroom, affectionately called the Book Nook. Since it is on the 2nd floor, it has better lighting. Here I captured Ty snuggled up and telling me a story that involved dragons and pee (if you have ever had a 4 year old boy, well, that will make perfect sense).
I think we may have a contender. But I am not yet convinced.
Enter… MASTER BEDROOM. I have high hopes for you, master bedroom. Mainly because we have no curtains in there – and haven’t for a while. We used to have curtains, mind you, but they fell down. And we just didn’t have the energy to re-hang them. Yup, we are THAT tired. Now we just have huge windows that face west. And overlook three of our neighbor’s yards. Our view allows us to determine what our neighbors are watching on their tv each night as we go to bed. Dave and I usually turn to each and say, “Ah, there are those Smiths (name is changed to protect the innocent) watching TV AGAIN.” This is packed with irony as Dave and I average about 351 hours of TV each week.
Okay, grabbed the oldest 4 kiddos, threw them on the bed, and started shooting. It was about 3 pm and the western light was coming in through the windows, but it wasn’t to that powerful “spotlight” point yet. The best part of this experiment is that putting 4 kids on a bed ranging in age from 4 to 14 gets you a melee of giggles, wrestling, and all-out fun! Which was why I didn’t have to resort to the “fake laugh trick”, we had REAL laughter! See if you can spot Jade (age 14) at the bottom of the dog pile!
Just to be sure, I tried it out the next day. And, yes, that is my FOOT you see in the picture — doing double duty at tickling and keeping Emme from falling off the bed.
Ding-Ding-Ding! I think we have a winner, folks!
Now, I will just have to get used to having all our important family events in my bedroom. Hmmmmmmm…

So I’m walking through the airport, and I pick up a copy of Popular Photography magazine, flip it open and BAM! Pascaline is right on the inside cover!! I was so excited and tried to tell the lady behind the cash register, but I don’t think she understood a thing I said.
But that’s not all, her sweet smile is in America Photo magazine too!
