A few weeks ago, I did five Mini Sessions in Denver, CO.  Oh my goodness, I had the most WONDERFUL time!!  (To the families: I LOVE your kids–LOVE them!!)

This special family drove seven hours for their mini session, all the way from Kansas to Colorado!

And I fell in LOVE with their little boy and his best friend named “Bear”.

To much sweetness for words!  This photo idea was Bear’s suggestion.  :)

I had SO MUCH fun that we are TOTALLY going to do Mini Sessions in New York!!  We are coming to NY for our CONFIDENCE Workshop and a book signing/photo demo at the Park Slope Barnes and Noble!  But we’ve also carved out time for some Minis!

I’m going to post more of my favorite photos up soon, but here are two more for now!  This little sweetie is a busy 18 month old.  Boy-oh-boy, did she keep us on our toes!  So fun!

And this is little Ms. Ruby.  You’ll get to know her a lot more in the next few days!  Isn’t she darling?!

What is a Mini Session?  Keep reading!

If a Photo Shoot is something that tickles your fancy with Mother’s Day around the corner, here are the details!

Cost is $550.  Mini Photo Session MUST be prepaid to confirm your time.  You must be on time, preferably 10 minutes early, since sessions are booked back to back.

Benefits of a Mini Photo Session with Me Ra :)

1. Done in 30 minutes! Have you ever experienced a photo shoot where you find yourself standing around, wondering what to do for the photographer.  Not going to happen with me!  One of the BEST time frames for a photo shoot with kids is about 30 minutes long.  And I maximize that 30 minutes like you would not believe.  We are moving, trying different ideas, laughing, playing and DONE before the kids are frustrated and tired. (Some of you may be thinking, THIRTY minutes?  What can you shoot in thirty minutes?  Answer: a whole heck of A LOT–see below)

2. 30 Final Images Narrowed Down for YOU! Are you one of those parents who has thousands, I mean THOUSANDS, of images on your computer?  Do you feel lost in knowing how to choose certain ones to print?  I hear your pain.  This is why I narrow down our time to the top 30 moments of the shoot.  And I mix them up with both Color and BW toning.

3. High Res Files FOREVER! The 30 Final Images are YOURS!  (yep, you get to keep the images and print them wherever you’d like)

4. Show the Sweetness Off!  16×20 Metal Print of Your Favorite Image.  Our team is more than happy to help you pick the one photo for this Metal.  Moms have gone CRAZY over these Metal Prints since we spotlighted them on the Nate Berkus Show.  Nate LOVES these Metal prints–I LOVE these Metal Prints!  Watch the episode by clicking “Turn Your Portraits into Art.”

I have these metals all around our house, and I even have them hanging on my outside deck because they can handle rain and snow and add this wonderful design and color to our backyard.  Once you get yours, you’ll join the fan club of Metal Prints!  :)

The BIG question…What can I shoot in 30 minutes? Well, this is what I shot in 10 minutes at a recent CONFIDENCE Workshop in Seattle.

Mom had these amazing, long legs, so I walked the group through my thought process on how to set up a shot that tells this story along with the story of two generations.

Love all that JOY!!

(Within this 10 minutes, 20 plus women were watching me as I walked them through my camera settings and creative process–while trying to keep the kids entertained–mind you.  :) )

When we do your family shoot, we won’t have an audience.  :) And, I’m going to pull out the individual personalities of your kids so that you feel like the story of “who they are” is found in your photos.

When I’m doing a live shoot on The Nate Berkus Show, I get less than 7 minutes and ONE click for each photo–one shot, and it has to work because 2 million viewers see it.

Bottom line, a thirty minute Mini Session with your family feels like total LUXURY on my end!!  We can do ENDLESS things in thirty minutes!  Only two time slots left below!  Can’t wait to see you in Central Park!

TWO TIME SLOTS left to CHOOSE FROM:

1. Friday, April 15th, 8:30am-9:00am

2. Friday, April 15th, 9:15am-9:45am

3. Friday, April 15th, 10:00am-10:30am SOLD OUT

4. Friday, April 15th, 10:45am-11:15am SOLD OUT

CLICK HERE to pick your time slot and pre-pay!  Once you are signed up, Genie (my right hand woman) will email you with details, like what to wear, what to bring, how to prepare, etc.  Questions?  Don’t hesitate to email us at info@merakoh.com.

Want more than 30 minutes?

My Portrait Packages start at $3K.  I come to your home and spend up to two hours with your family, documenting the many expressions of your family being in the place you love.  I’m not sure we can make this work for New York because of how tight my schedule is, but if this is something that would mean very much to you shoot us an email.  Let’s see what we can do.  email info@merakoh.com.

I can’t wait to see all of your beautiful families in New York!!  If not the Mini Session, I hope to see you at the Park Slope Barnes and Noble event that evening (Friday, April 14th at 4pm).  CLICK HERE to RSVP for Park Slope!

Much love!

m

p.s.  Please keep in mind that you MUST be on time for your Mini Session.  If you are late, your time and payment will be forfeited.  Thanks for understanding and arriving early!

p.s.s.  We will be in Chicago in May for our CONFIDENCE Workshop and book event!   I’m thinking of adding a day that is dedicated to Mini Photo Sessions for Chicago, but let me know if that is something you’d like!

My heart is so full after reading ALL your comments yesterday.  I spent a lot of time writing last week and over the weekend, pushing through  my own walls of limitations.  It’s a honor to share with you pieces of what shakes out for me.  You must know that I’m talking to myself in that post as much as I’m writing to you.  :)   Are we in this together or what?!  And the week is just getting started!  Lots to watch online and on TV this week!!  But let’s look at Thursday specifically!  Thursday is going to be INSANE FUN!  If you are a mama in the greater Seattle area, I’d love to meet you on Thursday!  We can even meet on TV!  :)

Looking for THREE BABIES for TV this WEEK!

Do you have a sweet baby that you would LOVE to show off on TV?  Do you live in the greater Seattle area?  If so, email me a photo of you and your baby ASAP!  I’ve been invited to talk about my new book, “Your Baby in Pictures”, on King 5′s daily program “New Day”.  I’m so excited for this show because we are going to demonstrate a few of my favorite photo recipes from the book!  But I need three sweet babies to make it happen!  That’s where you and your baby come in to the picture!  :)

I’m looking for three specific age groups;

1.  A sleepy newborn that is less than two weeks old.

2. A 3-6 month old who can push themselves up on their hands and knees (like they are going to crawl) but still to young to crawl.  Instead, they just rock back and forth.

3. A 6-9 month old with CRAZY BIG CHUBBY LEGS!  :)   If your baby’s got some serious thighs and ROLLS, email me today!

This is going to be such a fun experience.  I promise to walk you through the whole thing.  And what a wonderful memory for your baby to always have and watch when they are older.  They were famous from Day One!  :)   If your baby fits the description, email me today at info@merakoh.com WITH a photo of your baby, plus their name and age.

(forewarning: It’s a long one today. :) )

I was reminded last week of how critical some people can be when you are pursuing your passion. A number of you emailed me about how to deal with criticism, how to hang in there when you feel unwanted, unwelcome, and most of all, how to know whether or not you really have what it takes to pursue your passion.

First of all, everyone has the right to pursue their passion no matter how crazy it sounds or how high the odds are against you! I think of my Korean dad who came to America with a single briefcase.  Everything he owned was in that suitcase; an English dictionary, two pairs of underwear and a Bible.  Some would say he was completely crazy for coming to a foreign land to find success–he didn’t even know the language!  But he had a vision for something bigger, something that others called impossible, and he knew that even if he didn’t have a dollar to his name–he owned the right to step into the unknown and follow his impossible dreams.

Seven years ago, I walked into a camera store.  I was going to shoot my FIRST wedding that weekend.  I asked the man behind the counter if he could show me the external flashes.  Instead of saying “Sure!  Let me get some out for you.”  He looked at me and said, “What are you going to do with it?” Fair enough question.  I stood up with excitement in my eyes and said, “I’m going to shoot my first wedding!”  He shook his head, rolled his eyes and said “What makes you think you can shoot a wedding?  More importantly, what makes you think you have the right to try and document the most important day of some one’s life.”  I was speechless.  I walked out without a flash.  But, I still went on to shoot that first wedding and would later shoot million dollar weddings.  I had a vision, a passion burning inside me, and if I wanted to do the hard work to see it happen that was my choice.  I get to choose over and over again to aim for the impossible, and so do you!

When I was immersed in the writing world, I was told that once your first book was published, you had to write follow up books in a similar vein.  If you write historical fiction, you have to stick with historical fiction.  If you write self help, you have to stick with self help.  This was the only way to find success as a writer.  Makes sense.  Well, I wrote a follow up book to Beauty Restored.  I’ve got all two hundred and something odd pages in a file downstairs.  But there was one key problem.  The book didn’t ask me to write it, to give it life.  I did it because I thought I had to.  And when I submitted it to the publisher, I ended up withdrawing the submission, because I knew this book was not something that had asked to be created.

We all know that question when it comes.  You are minding your own business, going about day to day life, and something new and unfamiliar comes knocking on your door and says “Create me!  Let me live and breathe!”  And we say, “But I can’t because the time it takes to try and create you–with no guarantee of what you will give in return–doesn’t make any sense.”  We close the door, abandoning and ignoring our own dreams.

On March 20th, ten years ago, I published my first book, Beauty Restored.  On March 15th 2011, five days from the ten year anniversary of my first book, my second book, Your Baby in Pictures, was published.  One book is for women who have been sexually victimized and are desperate to know that healing is possible.  The other is for new moms who want to capture their precious babies.  Two totally different books with two different subjects.  But there is one message.  Empowering you.

Photography as a business, not hobby, came knocking one day on the heart of this little mama.  You want to talk about the knocking not making any sense!  I had spent the last ten years writing and speaking to women about restoration after sexual victimization.  Why would I set that all down and pursue the business of Family Portraits?  But you all know that knock, and I knew it too.  No matter how crazy it sounds, no matter how much it doesn’t make ANY sense at all, it comes and says “Create me.  Give me life.”  I knew I had to answer and so do  many of you.  And what I have found over and over again is that the answering is vital, not the end result.

You may answer the knocking at your heart and find that your predictable life has been turned upside down.  (You are in good company.  :) )  But losing your footing isn’t the only loss.  The day to day grind is lost too because you are stepping into the unknown and your heart is excited.  Terrified too?  Sure.  But EXCITED!!  You are stepping into a world that is full of possibility and wonder.  Life is all of a sudden infused with inspiration for your creation.  The path isn’t clear, but the excitement of what’s ahead–what’s to come–lifts you up.  And you get to answer if you want too.

Shoot, wouldn’t it be the perfect picture if those critics weren’t there?  But they are.  And guess what, they aren’t going anywhere.  They are camped out till the end, right next to your fears, doubt and lies.  Frustrating, huh?  So what are we going to do?  How are we going to endure all the fears, doubts, and criticism?  As someone who is working toward an impossible dream, can I share what I’ve found?  This way, when your storms hit (because they will) you will know you haven’t lost your way.

As you pursue your passion, your impossible vision, you will experience storms as others stand up and say that you are crazy, offensive, silly, a disgrace and most of all, unqualified.  This is a storm that will come again and again.  So don’t be afraid.  Try your best to not let it take you off guard.  It’s just part of the journey.  And it’s okay to cry it out.  But promise me you’ll get up the next morning and try again.

Sometimes you will feel like the ship that carries your dreams is stuck in the middle of nowhere.  You will feel like you are going nowhere.  It will feel painful and at times, incredibly lonely?  This is when I play one of my favorite songs that says, “It’s okay to be lonely as long as you know you are free.”

You must also ask yourself if you are willing to accept the fact that trying to achieve the impossible may also ask the impossible of you?  If yes, there is good news.  ALL your fears and limitations will eventually be proven wrong!  But to know this–to REALLY know this for yourself and not just because I or someone else said it–you will be asked to face them one by one.

With this information in hand, if you still want to push forward, here is the incredible news.   You will find reward that is beyond anything you can fathom now.  Your initial dreams will flourish into something more powerful than you imagined.  You will find that you are much stronger than you realized.  You will have not only taught yourself how to build a dream, but your little ones too (as they witness your success but most of all, witness you endure the disheartening days too).

As time passes, the ship that carries your dreams will gain more ground.  This will take time.  As mothers trying to pursue a passion, we often feel like Time is our enemy.  Time is not your enemy.  Instead, Time is essential and strong.  You will try to speed up the process, but in her grace, She will not let you.  Trust Time.  She is trustworthy.

Trust the creative attempts that end up being a mess.

Stay humble because the creative process is a humbling journey that is meant to serve and endure.  For example, if you fail at a shoot, reschedule.  Let yourself be a beginner.  Let yourself be a learner.   An expert can never inspire the way a courageous beginner does.  Trust the process of “making a mess”.  You will need to make a mess to get out of your own box and limitations.

If you answer the knocking at your heart’s door, nothing will be easy.  But everything will be worthy.  Remember that…

Becoming a successful and confident artist is not about having it all together, but the strength to allow things to be messy enough to discover something new.

Becoming a successful and confident artist is not about mastering the art, but serving the art and those who encounter it.

Becoming a successful and confident artist is not about accolades and awards but witnessing your creations bring healing to you and then to others.

Becoming a successful and confident artist is not about living in security and familiarity, but growing accustomed to living in the dark–surrounded by mystery.

Becoming a successful and confident artist does not keep you safe from doubt, fear and criticism, but rather gives you the opportunity to face doubt, fear and criticism so that you can be strengthened–so that you can practice forgiveness–and in the end, be transformed.

Becoming a successful and confident artist is not about beating yourself up because of how far you still need to go.  It’s about pausing, looking back and celebrating how far you’ve come.  (Christina, that’s especially for you my dear.)

Becoming a successful and confident artist is about setting sail, even when the journey itself is unclear.

Becoming a successful and confident artist is about answering the door when the Creation comes knocking.

This week is going to be full of encouragement for you.  I want you to feel replenished this week in multiple ways.  In fact, set your DVRs for this Thursday on The Nate Berkus Show! It’s an inspiring, honest show about how to turn your passion into a paycheck. One of my heroes, Marlee Matlin, is on the show, and it’s an incredible honor to be sharing a few of my own stories of how I got my photography passion off the ground and into a business.  For all of you who felt beat down and devalidated last week, and emailed me with a heavy heart…One, I’ve been praying for you.  Two, today’s blog is for you–know that you are not crazy and especially NOT alone.  Three, Thursday’s show is especially for you.  Four, you are loved.

Where are you at this morning–the Monday that faces a new week to be discovered?  Was there a line in today’s post that connected with how you feel.  If yes, here is an exercise that I have found helpful time and time again.  Write down the line(s) that spoke to your heart.  Copy them in your journal.  Then set the timer for five minutes and write how your hearts feels as you consider those lines.  Let your words be messy, jumbled, awkward–just let them come out–let the heaviness lift.  When the timer goes off, take a moment and thank yourself for taking the time to nurture your passion, your impossible dream.  Because little did you know, that’s exactly what you did.

May you feel a lift in your wings this week!

xo,

m

Welcome to Part 2 of the Orange County CONFIDENCE Workshop!  Today is a post FULL of inspirational photos!!  Enjoy!!

To give you a little background, on Day Two of the workshop, we have a Family Photo Shoot.  Several families volunteer their time so that our attendees can get some great practice without the pressure of it being a “real” shoot.

I like to start by having one of the families be my example, and then I walk the ladies through every decision I’m making from my camera settings to brainstorming creative ideas of how to tell the family’s story.  Sometime the kids have the BEST ideas!  (Angela! Thank you so much for the moment below!)

Together, we get our camera settings set and then the workshop ladies have a chance to shoot along with me.  It’s always a BLAST as creative boundaries are pushed right and left!

Meet one of my favorite little girls!  She is such a sweetie!!!

And every little girl deserves the right to twirl!

The California beach and sunshine is so WONDERFUL, especially at sunset.  But that would be way to easy!  :)   So we up the challenge and take the ladies out in the sun when it’s right over our heads.

I don’t want to have a perfect lighting situation because as photographers, we so rarely have perfect lighting-perfect any thing really!  This way, the ladies gain confidence in learning how to meter, capture rim light,

deal with harsh sun and so much more!

Be inspired as you scroll down and see what these ladies captured!  For many of them, it was their first time shooting in Manual Mode–but they ROCKED IT!

I’m also so excited for you to see the people they captured!  A handful of the moms who brought their families took our CONFIDENCE Workshop in San Diego three years ago.  Some of them have gone on to pursue portrait businesses, and wow, they are doing incredible!  The family above with that sweet little girl, is Rhonda Kane’s family!  They drove almost six hours to come and be with us!  What a total honor!  (love you Rhonda!)

Now comes inspiration from women just like you and me!  Enjoy!

Lacy Edwards has a great eye!  I love that she captured this fleeting moment of baby between mom’s legs.

Does anyone know who shot this next photo!  It’s such a great different take on that exact same moment!  I love that we have a sense of how small this little one is with mom’s boots on either side.

Lacy also captured this of big sister.  Look at those beautiful EYES! The lighting Lacy is awesome!

These first four families are all women who have attended the CONFIDENCE Workshop.  It was wonderful to give them the opportunity to be on the “other” side of the camera.  Susanne–gorgeous photo of you by Angela Ray!

These next two are by Rose. I love the unique angle and persepctive that Rose had with both photos!

I mean Rose!!!  This shot below could be the cover of a kid’s catalog or magazine!

Michelle Meiner, this photo is just lovely.  LOVELY!  I love how the little girl is looking right at the camera but the little boy is watching sand fall.  Mom looks soft, gentle and a presence that brings peace to her kids.  Way to not only meter this shot, but great job on giving each person freedom to express their own feelings.

And Melisa Navarro captured this shot of father and son!  Wow!!  Look at those eyes!!  I love the soft, muted feeling of the whole image.  So incredible!

Roxie from CanvasRox came with her two sassy, beautiful twins!  I love what Portia Harris captured of Roxie’s daughter!  Portia, way to meter that amazing sunlight on her hair!  You rocked this girl!

Look at the sweetness that Amy Barnes captured!

One of the things I love most about children is their dozens and dozens of expressions–each one being so genuine and authentic to who they are.  Robin Fuehrer did a couple in a row, and I had to show you the diversity.

It’s expressions like this that family’s treasure for years to come.  Wonderful job Robin!

Laura Falcon!!  I love the composition of this shot.  I love that you allowed for lots of empty space with all the sand because it draws our attention to his sweetness that much more.  Great job!

Samantha Jones, our ROE winner, did some great work with Rhonda’s whole family!  Way to shoot into the sun GIRL!

Jamie Backlin captured this priceless, sweet moment of Rhonda and her daughter.  I LOVE it.  It says L-O-V-E all over it!

As the workshop ladies are experimenting, stretching their own creative boundaries–lots of emotions run through them.  Sometimes they are so overwhelmed with fear that we wonder if they also recognize how much fun they are having.  You know how it can be so intimidating to step out of your comfort zone–all you are aware of is that fact that you are not the most comfortable–and yet, joy is their too.  Joy is impossible to hide when we are following a passion, no matter how uncomfortable or challenging it can feel.

Just to prove it to you, Brian walks around and collects evidence!  :)

Had to do this last one!  Couldn’t resist!  :)

This next part is so vital.  When you follow your passion, you often venture into a land that is unknown, unfamiliar.  You wonder if you are lost.  You wonder if your passion is true.  All these feelings can make you want to run the other way. But before you do, pause.  Close your eyes and let yourself sink in to your creative spirit.  Yes, there is fear and uncertainty.  But can you also feel the joy–the joy that comes from a creative spirit who is set free to be adventurous!  Imperfections, mistakes, stumbles, all the above will happen.  But silliness, laughter, reward and more passion than ever–also waiting.

Proud of you ladies!  The joy on you is BEAUTIFUL!

xoxo,

m

We are taking a breather from Your Baby in Pictures (reaching #68 yesterday on Amazon’s ranking–scream, scream, scream!),  and turning today’s focus to YOU!  Let’s celebrate women in photography!  Let’s cheer for women who step out of their comfort zone to gain CONFIDENCE!

In January, we held our Orange County, CA CONFIDENCE Workshop.  A group of beautiful, brave women gathered that were so incredibly diverse.  One woman travels around the country, chasing storms with her husband to do pole repairs to keep everyone’s electricity going!  One woman was taking a break from her day to day desk job grind and hoping to be refreshed.  One woman was married to a successful photographer and felt it was time to find confidence in her own photography.  The list goes on and on.  Here are a handful of great Behind-the-Scenes moments that attendee, Michele Menier, captured (thank you Michele!).

The Baby Shoot on Day One.

Robin Fuehrer captured this Behind-the-Scenes shot of the women going for it during the baby shoot.

I never know how many babies will actually show up at our workshops.  So many variables play into babies making it to the shoot, whether it’s a sudden fever, a horrible rash, you name it.  We had seven babies booked, but only two showed.  But, wait till you see the diversity in what these women captured!

This precious photo was captured by Jamie Backlin.  I love the mom’s facial expression in this moment.  She looks enduring, soft, and completely in love.  Great job Jamie!

Amy Barnes, what is there to say!  The photo says it all!

Great moment of dad and baby!

Angela Ray had a different angle on this sweet moment!

Shift the angle again, and the magic keeps coming without even moving dad and baby!  Look at what else can be captured!  (great job again Amy!)

Rose Pierce finds her own angle and moment!

It was amazing to see their creative spirits unfold and take flight over the course of two days.

So what do we do when only two babies show up?  The next best thing!  I split the ladies into small groups.  Half of them start with the babies while the other half work with each other on a special photo assignment that is meant to push them WAY out of their comfort zone.

I’m always excited to hear how the rewards of this photography exercise were just as valuable as working with the babies and lighting.  And most of all, I love to see some of the finished images they post.  Beautiful women feeling beautiful–radiating beauty and letting their creative hearts expand!

gorgeous!

Love, LOVE this one!

Love it!!  Look at her SMILE!!

So lovely!  Jennifer, it was so wonderful to have you and your mom there–digging for confidence together!

Melisa Navarro captured this joyful shot below!  Go Melisa!!

Lacy Edwards, this is just timeless beauty!

Love how the soft colors enhance her gentle, kind spirit.

Meet our OC, beautiful, Running on Empty winner!  Fierce and shining!

Wonderful photo that is inviting and safe feeling!  Having your picture taken is SCARY–even if you love shooting.   Imagine how scared our clients can feel!  That’s why it’s so important to have a photo of YOU on your blog or website so people know they can feel safe with you.

Beautiful and SASSY!  Love this!

When women pursue their passion, they shine from within.

It’s as if we glow like a pregnant woman.  Maybe it’s because our creative spirit is pregnant with life that is only growing in it’s power and beauty!

We know in our heart that when this new life is birthed, it will bless not only us but countless others.

(captured by Angela Ray)

And maybe, just maybe, we’ll find ourselves soaring!

I want to thank ALL the women who attended our Orange County CONFIDENCE Workshop in CA.

It was a complete honor to spend the weekend with you!  Thank you for opening your hearts and stepping into unknown territory with yourself, each other and me.  What an amazing weekend it was!!  If I could, I’d hug all of you right now.  Love you all!

(I’ve got your photo results from Day Two’s Family shoot to share!  Stay tuned!)

Happy Monday everyone!  Today is such a BIG day!

First, tune in to The Nate Berkus Show…TODAY!   (CLICK HERE to find what time it airs in your city!)  Today’s show is all about telling your family’s story throughout your home.  If you are a lover of family photos, you will love the storytelling photo tips we discuss!

Nate Berkus has been so incredible to work with.  As many of you know, Brian and I are working toward me having a weekly show!  I can’t tell you how much I am learning about TV, how a show runs, scripting, etc.  Nate’s amazing team works at such an insane speed.  So when he offers to show support for my new book, Your Baby in Pictures, and do an Audience Book Giveaway (not only do I want to kiss him a zillion times, but I’m also feeling like I’m going to explode right off that seat I’m sitting on!)  Nate’s generosity means SO MUCH!  Watch for the book giveaway at the end!  (Thank you Nate, with all my heart!)

But that’s not all!

Today is the sixth day since Your Baby in Pictures was released!  On Friday afternoon, Amazon SOLD OUT! (my jaw dropped TO THE FLOOR!)  I was so bummed when we didn’t see the “official” SOLD OUT words on Amazon, but a fabulous gal named BreAnna made up for it with this photo!  (Girl, you are so awesome!)

Amazon and Barnes and Noble both have more copies in again.  Phew!  :)

The last six days of sales have been way beyond anything Brian and I ever imagined.  We’ve been told that if the numbers continue to stay high for the next eight days (the official first two weeks of the book’s release), we may have a shot at the New York Times bestseller list.  (It’s such a LONG shot, but I’ll take it none the less!)  I’m thrilled to just have a stinking SHOT at that famous list!  (I mean seriously, are we even talking about this?!)

So again, thank YOU a million times for buying copies not just for you but all your friends!  I’m just speechless at how many of you have emailed after buying not just one but half a dozen copies!  It’s because of YOUR incredible excitement, awesome and honest reviews, and viral support that the book is even this high in the rankings (and that is without TV exposure!  You are all AMAZING!!).  I wish I could reach through my monitor and give you each a BIG, BIG hug!!

Thank you a MILLION times!

I also LOVE the photos that you are sending me!!  Seeing you with the book makes all of this that much more real and not virtual.  Keep sending them because I LOVE to see your beautiful faces and especially your babies!!

You have NO IDEA how much photos like this make my day!!

xoxo,

m

p.s.s.s. For all the guys who love stats!  I think we’ve lost Brian since the book came out!  :)   How much do you want to bet that he’ll be pulling every stat of Amazon and every other place throughout the week!  If you saw him the last six days, you wouldn’t bet at all!  :)

Our New York Confidence! Workshop is coming up April 16-17 in Jersey City, NJ. And we have our Running on Empty Winner!

It’s Genie for Me Ra, who’s cooking up more fun for all of us!  Her new book, Your Baby in Pictures, is SOARING SWIFTLY UP THE BESTSELLER LIST!  And did you get to play in the ‘Ask and Learn’ on the SOARORITY Forum last night with Christine Barker? Wasn’t that FUN and so HELPFUL! You can still access all her tips and resources by clicking HERE – and also last month’s with Sara France!

As you know Me Ra and Brian try to include one deserving woman–a mom Running on Empty–per workshop. Then a hard working panel of past winners read the nominations and cast votes. It’s an honor, privilege and no cake walk to do. Heart-wrenching so many times. And each one of them so deserving. Me Ra and Brian honor each one of you – whether others nominated you or you nominated yourself. Your strength, love and passion are beautiful to witness, especially through times of hardship. Thank you again for sharing your stories and those of loved ones.

Our winner for the New York Confidence Workshop is …Laura Hanis!  Here is the story of her journey from her nomination:

“I would like to nominate myself for this workshop. This is not the first time I have nominated myself for one of Me Ra and Brian’s Confidence workshops. How do I even articulate why I feel like I, me of all people, deserve this opportunity. Confidence is something I have always struggled with. Not just in photography, but in life. The word itself makes me want to cringe. As a child, I was sexually abused by a family member for many years. The ramifications of how that has touched my life is something I can’t put into words. I believe it’s why I struggle so much with confidence. In so many areas of my life, I have been unbelievably blessed. I am originally from Olympia, WA and found God in my sorrow as a high school senior. It’s amazing what God can do in a person’s life. I found peace in my incest and began ministering to high school students in a youth program. Through that program, I met my husband and moved to Ohio to start a new life with him. I never realized how much I would miss my family. I think because of the abuse, I didn’t think I would. It never occurred to me how much of a rock my mom has been in my life until I left her and moved 2500 miles away. When my husband and I had our son, I didn’t want my mom to miss anything. So, I took out my little point and shoot to capture every single moment of my son’s life. Little did I know that photography would turn into my passion. In December, I applied for the SOAR scholarship and feel so energized and excited about being a part of the community. In my previous confidence nomination for the last Seattle workshop, I spoke about how badly I desire to be able to stay at home full time with my son; that raising him means more to me than I ever dreamed possible. It would be such an amazing gift to be able to have my passion for photography be my career. I feel so lacking though; that my work is not good enough to share with others. How can I confidently pose people, when I feel such a lack of confidence myself? I guess that being a part of this community is showing me that these workshops are so much more than just having confidence in photography and that excites me. It gives me hope. It would be an amazing gift since it’s also on my birthday weekend :) . I know every woman nominated for this is so deserving and have faith that whomever is chosen is the absolute right person to go. Thank you for reading and good luck in choosing!”

Maybe your birthday did the trick ;) But I doubt it. You deserve this. Congratulations Laura! We’re all rooting for you to find Confidence and skill to fuel your passion beyond belief! Email me, genie@merakoh.com, to let me know if you’re coming, okay? Please do so by Sunday night at 9pm PT. (I know you sent your address to me, but we ask that you email me first). If it doesn’t work for you, we have beautiful Runner Ups.

Will you help me congratulate Laura!

Who is thinking of starting a Portrait Photography side business?  If it’s you, do you feel like you are swimming as you try and research all you can to get going?  Do you find answers, only to find three new questions for every answer?  Do you wonder how to brand yourself so that you are set apart?  Would it help to talk to someone who has been in the process the last eighteen months?  Picture NOT having to reinvent the wheel!  That’s what tonight is about on the SOARORITY forum with our ASK and LEARN event!

Meet Christine Barker!

Christine applied the first year for the SOAR! Scholarship.  When she didn’t get picked, she emailed me and told me that she was still determined to SOAR!  (and she wasn’t joking!!) .  This woman rolled up her sleeves and dove in!  She came to our NY CONFIDENCE Workshop, she learned how to shoot amazing photos!  (all these photos are courtesy of Christine)

Christine started building a business plan and brand with Jeff Jochum.  She has been doing all the HARD WORK of dream building and it’s inspiring to witness! And, I think it’s safe to say that many woman on the East Coast LOVE how Christine gives and encourages EVERY ONE along the way.  If you are just starting, Christine Barker is a RICH resource for you!

But let me back up…what are we doing with Christine tonight?  Besides having a BLAST on the forum with YOU!

Starting this month, we have weekly events that will happen throughout the year on the SOARORITY forum.  The first and third Thursday of every month are going to be our special Ask and Learn evenings. The first week, we will feature a pro who has been in the business for 5+ years.  Sara France was AMAZING this month!  If you missed it, read the THREAD HERE!

*The third week, we thought it would be super helpful to feature someone who has just started their business in the last 2 years.  Their marketing tips, how to get your business off the ground, essentials of what you need to get going, etc. are going to be totally fresh and possibly different than what we’d ask a seasoned pro.  I think it’s going to be AWESOME!

We will often have the photographer be a SOAR! Sister or CONFIDENCE graduate for this third Thursday.  If you’d like to volunteer for a month, you can ALWAYS email our awesome SOAR! Coordinator at wendy@merakoh.com! Tell us who you are, and what you’d like to share!

Tonight, YES TONIGHT! (yeah!), Wendy will introduce Christine on the forum at 5pm PST, and for the next two hours, you can post your questions in THIS THREAD!   Christine will refresh her screen (with all of you refreshing) and get her typing speed on as she answers as many questions as possible in two hours!

Christine has SO MUCH to share with being in the thick of getting her business off the ground!  I even surprised her at the SOAR! Garden Party and asked her to share, and she was AMAZING–totally inspiring.  You would NEVER know that she is terrified to speak in front of people!  So proud of this woman!

The SOARORITY forum was buzzing with a wonderful Ask and Learn earlier this month!  This is what it’s all about ladies, being inspired by each other, being empowered, feeling surrounded and supported and so much more!

Gather your questions and remember that NO question is dumb or silly!  We got start somewhere, right?!

See you at the SOARORITY at 5pm PST tonight!

xoxo,

m

Wow, yesterday was one of the most AMAZING days ever!

I woke up and had no idea what to expect. I’m still in shock at how high the book climbed on Amazon!  By the end of the day, Your Baby in Pictures was ranked #231!  (Is that even possible!)  #1 in Arts and Photography!! (serious?!)  Someone said yesterday if people keep buying and you stay in those rankings for a week, you have a chance at being a New York Times Bestseller.   Does anyone know if that’s really true?!  Ha!  New York Times Bestseller!!!  Wouldn’t that be INSANE!

We got so many wonderful emails yesterday.  Can I share a few?!

-A handful of you emailed and said that you got the book yesterday and loved it so much that you bought another SIX copies to have in stock as your new “Go-To Baby Shower Gift!”  (YEAH!! Wow!!)

-Some of you wrote about this being your new gift to clients, especially the excited moms who want to learn more about how you take the pictures you do!  (I am totally honored beyond words!)

-Some women emailed and said they didn’t have kids, but they are always the ones with the camera and are excited to try all the photo-recipes on their friends, nieces, nephews–whatever babies they can find!  (YEAH again!)

-So many of you said that the Tips on Finding Great Light, Common Mistakes to Avoid, etc were helpful for kids of all ages!

-One husband wrote how excited he was to know how to help his wife look thinner in photos!  (YES!  I got your back husbands!  :) )

-Twenty six of you have wrote Amazon reviews that I…simply come up short on finding words that will do justice on expressing how much each one means.

What an AMAZING day!  Brian and the kids surprised me with balloons, flowers and precious drawings.  Cathy Mores, an amazing photographer in Kansas with the most beautiful heart, who drove SEVEN HOURS from Kansas with her husband and four year old for a Mini Session in CO, sent the most BEAUTIFUL bouquet of flowers.

(Cathy, you are unreal!  I feel like I should send YOU  flowers for driving seven hours for a mini session!  Thank you so MUCH!)

Clickin Moms surprised and overwhelmed me with the most amazing write up about Women in Photography.  What an amazing group of women photographers.  I feel so honored to be a part of their community.  You must check out their forum and resources if you haven’t before.   They are rich with encouragement and teaching!

When Brian and I got in bed last night, we were both in sheer amazement at how the day had unfolded.  We couldn’t stop smiling!  Thank you for being such an amazing community and supporting us with the passion you do.

To all of you who bought Your Baby in Pictures, spread the word on Facebook and Twitter, emailed your friends, wrote the most amazing reviews and are still spreading the word–wow–thank you so much.  I wanted this book to be all about empowering YOU–to break through even more sound barriers for those of you who long to capture the photos you envision–no matter what camera you have.  I can’t wait to see your photo-recipe results!!

Who knows, maybe we will hit the New York Times Bestseller list!  Crazier things have happened, right?!  :)

xoxo,

m

p.s.  We have a new Ask and Learn tomorrow night on the SOARORITY forum!  The first one was such a HUGE hit that we are bringing it back tomorrow night!  Pencil 5pm-7pm PST on your calendars for tomorrow night.  More details to come tomorrow!
