Announcing our Running on Empty Winner for Seattle!

It was a very difficult choice, as it always. We ask our panel to not be swayed by the number of nominations for one person, and the numbers were overwhelming! Each one of you so deserving, with touching and heart wrenching stories to tell. I know the road is difficult for many of you, others filled with new possibilities.

As you know Me Ra and Brian try to include one deserving woman–a mom Running on Empty–per workshop. Then a hard working panel of past winners read the nominations and cast votes. It’s an honor, privilege and no cake walk to do. Me Ra and Brian honor each one of you – whether others nominated you or you nominated yourself. We always say this, but it’s so true: Your strength, love and passion are beautiful to witness, especially through times of hardship. Thank you again for sharing your stories and those of loved ones.

Our winner for the Seattle Confidence Workshop is …Andrea! We didn’t ask for full names – but you know who you are! Here is the story of her journey from her nomination:

“There are so many stories of heart-break and trial, suffering and overcoming, need and desperate hope. As I read the nominations of the women who have been nominated, I am struck by the journey and courage of each one. So, I submit myself today in empathy and awe of each woman.

I saw this announcement with just hours to spare and still in the midst of the most difficult season of my life. Honestly, it’s very difficult for me to share, humbling in so many ways. Bringing the truth of my circumstances into the light leaves me feeling VERY vulnerable. Yet, I do this in a step of faith, knowing how Me Rah has inspired me both professionally and personally. Knowing that I had hoped to have this opportunity and suddenly, the opportunity has presented itself.

Almost four years ago, my family moved here from across the country. My husband, 4 year old son and I. We had enjoyed a beautiful summer here the year before and so, when a job opened up, we packed up all we owned, left all we knew and started a new life. It seemed full of possibilities and excitement, but I was soon to enter a season of great loss.

The moment we pulled in our new driveway, my phone rang. My father, whom I adored, who we had just left 2,000 miles away and who had been cleared of his cancer, was calling to say it had returned and the doctor wasn’t hopeful. His precious, last six months, I was too far away to walk with him. Still, we dived into our new life, as he wanted us to, and I spent many, many phone calls cherishing every moment I could with him. I was grateful to spend the last month by his side and blessed to be the last person with him before he died.

Just a few months later, my step-daughter and her two young sons arrived for short visit. Only once in our home, she shared that she had no home to return to. We talked through her options and offered to let her stay with us, hoping to help her get back on her feet and start a new life. It was a hard thing to take on immediately after such a loss, but worthy of the sacrifice, we believed. Her time with us wasn’t always easy. Suddenly, my son had two other little boys sharing their mommy’s attention. Three extra people in the house made for tight quarters. But it gave all of us a great opportunity to learn, from littlest child to oldest adult, about sharing, growing, forgiveness, boundaries. Still, when it was time for them to move into their own home, my step-daughter chose to distance herself and we didn’t hear from her again. Once before we had attempted to help her in a crisis and we were beginning to see a pattern that broke our hearts, both for her, her children and our relationship.

During her last few months with us, my husband received notice that he was being laid off. We had moved here so he could take a position with a large home-builder…just months before the mortgage industry crashed. While he was a rising star in the company, the company itself was suffering more and more. He was able to survive three lay-offs before finally, the company had no choice but to let him go as well.

I don’t know if it was the stress of all that we had experienced, the move, new job and then loss of job, stressess and losses, but just months later, my husband of 20 years left as well. My son, who had always been full of life and joy, was suddenly shattered and sullen and I wasn’t much better myself. Through prayer and friendship, God gave me the strength to overcome each day, to help my son through his grief and make his life as normal as possible.

Over the past 1 1/2, my husband and I have been separated and much of that time seeking counsel to see if the healing could come to restore our family. But then another devastating wave came. The women my husband had a short affair with announced she had had a child and it has proven to be his. It has shaken us to the core, because our son is adopted. We were never able to conceive and doctors told us it would be impossible for my husband to do so. It’s hard to explain the loss and pain I felt at this news. Years of painful infertility, I once thought healed, has been reopened and in a way that feels tragic and brutal. Some days it has been hard to get out of bed. The desire to hide from any more pain has been incredibly real and tempting.

The fire of the trials has brought all of the impurities to the surface in my heart and in our relationship. It is a disarming and humbling experience. I once had what felt like a normal, healthy, loving family and adventurous life. Things seemed predictable and it was a way of life I thought I could count on. Now, everything I have known has changed. I have moved away from everyone I love and who loves me, but have found friends here just for this season and my God who is with me wherever I go. My family isn’t looking like I had dreamed it would, but with everything in me, I know good is coming from this. I don’t see it fully yet, I don’t know what the future holds, but I have grown so much. I have the love of a beautiful son. I moment by moment choose to lay back and rest in the arms of the only One who can save me and moment by moment, day by day, I find victory, help, new strength and life, chosing to be forgive and live from as healthy a place as possible.

It isn’t easy though. Even financially, I make it one day at a time. My attempt to find work that fits my life right now has been a dead-end. But despite that, I took my tax return and took a HUGE leap of faith and bought a new camera. Years ago I had a wonderful film camera. My son’s first year home I KNOW I took more than 3,000 pictures just of him…and that was film! But with the cost being more than I could do, I settled for a little point and shoot that had me completely uninspired. I purchased my DSLR and the next day got on a plane to shoot my nephews graduation from Basic Training. I had said that I would never shoot weddings…but in May, my first real photo shoot is…you guessed it, a wedding! Having this outlet once again has been a breathe of life in a weary soul. I LOVE to capture life with my camera. I believe this is a new door for me, a place to inspire me and bless others and hopefully a way to provide a little extra income for my son and I.

Confidence. It’s a word that has taken on great meaning to me in this season. I realize now how little I used to have of it and how what I did have was shattered because of the loss and hurt. But, it’s also been a challenge and a promise to me. Rise up! Don’t be afraid! Take courage! You will walk in confidence! Believe it!

I don’t know what the future holds. But I do know this, I walk towards joy, life and confidence.

Thank you for considering me and all the worthy nominees!”

Andrea, one of our judges said, “She has endured such a long season of pain, that she truly deserves to be inspired and treasured for a weekend!!” I know we all completely agree. Email me at genie@merakoh.com and let me know if you can make it happen!

Please help us congratulate Andrea!

Running on Empty

“Here’s how it works!

In honor of how wonderful moms are and all that they do and give, Brian and I keep one spot reserved in every workshop for a special mom like YOU! That’s right, you (or she) will get a free pass to the upcoming CONFIDENCE Workshop in the Chicago area! (Please note, we don’t provide room/board and travel.)

To nominate a mom, you must post a comment telling us about the mom who you think deserves a big break in life! If you are a mom, you’re probably laughing because we ALL deserve a serious break. But the moms we’re looking for are the ones who have had a ridiculous amount of stress in their life whether from trauma or things just not going her way this year. She is a mom in your life that needs a serious blessing to come her way. She needs a serious surprise that gives her empty tank some fuel. If she is a woman that has miscarried, she is still a mom in my mind b/c I know her heart became a mother’s heart the moment she found out she was pregnant. Don’t hesitate to nominate her too.

I’m proud to say that some of our previous winners stepped out on a limb and nominated themselves. Take courage in them and feel free to nominate yourself if you know you need a serious break. Who knows, you may have your house remodeled by Oprah!”

We’ll collect all the nominees, have a committee of wonderful moms vote, and then announce the winner in the next week! Being as wonderful as they are, it’s not an easy job. As one said recently, “After reading each story I’d say, ‘I’m voting for HER’.”  Each one of you is so deserving.

Nominate her today and turn her day around!  Oh, wait!  Don’t forget to let her know you’ve nominated her too! If I was a mom nominated I’d love to know my friends were thinking of me whether I won or not! Deadline for ALL nominations is Sunday, 5/1 at 6pm PST. We heard a sudden crashing yesterday.  It was a distant sound, and then suddenly it was upon us.  A white figure moved through the trees outside our house, swinging from limb to limb with such force and determination, we couldn’t help but stand in awe.  Some people live here for years and never see what I refer to as the “White Ghost”.  Our last encounter with one of these majestic beings was last year.  Pascaline was reaching her climax of pain and high temperatures with the Dengue Fever.  The Dengue is often called the “bone breaker” because you feel like your bones are being crushed while you fever.  She cried out thinking her nose had broken off, and it was all we could do to hold her down and try to calm her.  And then the White Ghost came, but not just one, three or four.  Over Pascaline’s high pitched screams, the even louder whooping, whirling sounds of the Gibbon Apes encircled our house.  In that moment, Pascaline felt held–loved by the jungle.  That was the last time, we saw a White Ghost…until yesterday.

You hear the crashing sound first.  It sounds like a large body is falling through the trees, breaking every limb in its path.  And then, if you are lucky, you’ll see the white figure go swinging by–from branch to branch to branch–flawless at acrobatics in the canopy above you.  Not only did we see the White Ghost go flying by, but we watched him climb up the tree that looks over our house.

He climbed the tree and sat in the branches, exposed, looking down on us.  After five minutes of him staying put, the kids ran to tell our friends to come–come and see the White Ghost.  and he stayed for almost 15 minutes, looking down over our home.  People couldn’t believe how “out in the open” he was.  We couldn’t believe how long he stayed.  It was a magical moment.

When magic rises up around you, you can’t help but wonder the unusual, the unlikely, or impossible…can he recognize our scent? Does he remember Pascaline?  Is he even one of the three that came to her last year?  Is he watching over us, letting us know he is still here?  Is this moment random?  Am I silly for even wondering any of these things?

Without warning, he turned and leaped off the tree and swung away.  Those that live here full time expressed how rare this was–how amazing.  Our hearts were full of magic and wonder.

And then yesterday, in the late afternoon, the crashing sound came again.  At a time of day, when you rarely hear or see a Gibbon, the White Ghost came swinging through the trees again–the same blur of wonder.  Up the tree he climbed, and there he sat for almost twenty minutes.

I’m convinced that the White Ghost is watching over us.

What do you think?

xo,

m

I’ve got to introduce you to some pretty awesome mamas and babies!

A few weeks ago, I was given the honor of demonstrating some of my favorite photo-recipes from Your Baby in Pictures on King 5 news in Seattle!  But the best part, I got to have mamas and their babies come on set and be my models!  You can watch the segment, A Baby Forever, below, but here are a few fun behind-the-scenes shots.  This was so much FUN!  And even though it was a few weeks ago, I had to share!  Check out these shots!

These moms all volunteered to be my guinea pigs on the King 5 news set!

They got powdered for the camera and lights!

Their little ones played back stage.  (So stinking cute!)

When the cameras started rolling, the audience started clapping, the lights were shining bright–these sweeties did an AMAZING job!

But when the show’s segment was over, they CRASHED HARD! I mean, after all, it’s tough being a model for one of my photo-recipes!  :)   Especially if your the model for “Those Chunky, Adorable Baby Legs”.

To see these precious babies and their beautiful mamas in action, hit PLAY below.  Or CLICK HERE!

A BIG HUG to ALL the moms and babies who came on set!  Thank you so much for being in the audience and for letting me grab a handful of you and put you in front of the camera!  You were all amazing troopers!!  I’ve been meaning to thank you since that day–your time and willingness to be available is not taken lightly and blessed me and so many viewers!

For MORE Photo Tips, see the ones I gave to King 5′s website!  CLICK HERE and scroll past the video!

Happy belated Easter to everyone from the jungles of Thailand!

We’ve been here for almost a week, catching up on sleep, sun, lots of coconut shakes, Thai massage and Green Curry! :) But the wildlife, the wildlife is blowing us away.  Every time we turn around, nature surprises us.  For example, meet Shway, our new tortoise friend.  She sleeps all day, but at 5pm she wakes up and heads out for a sunset stroll.  The kids have been asked to do Tortoise Duty in the evening to make sure Shway doesn’t wander too far.

I LOVE that they have Tortoise Duty.  Hilarious!  Only in this corner of the world!

Many more stories and photos to come this week!

xoxo,

m

p.s. Tomorrow, meet a few beautiful moms and their babies who were brave enough to go on TV with me!

p.s.s.  A BIG thank you to Lynda Kennedy for all that she generously shared during the Ask & Learn last week!  Girl, I heard you ROCKED IT!!  Thank you SO MUCH for your time and big heart to help other women get off the ground!!  Love YOU!

Little Ms. Ruby.  You’ll get to know her a lot more!  Isn’t she darling?!

What is a Mini Session?  Keep reading!

If a Photo Shoot is something that tickles your fancy with Mother’s Day around the corner, here are the details!

Cost is $550.  Mini Photo Session MUST be prepaid to confirm your time.  You must be on time, preferably 10 minutes early, since sessions are booked back to back.

Benefits of a Mini Photo Session with Me Ra :)

1. Done in 30 minutes! Have you ever experienced a photo shoot where you find yourself standing around, wondering what to do for the photographer.  Not going to happen with me!  One of the BEST time frames for a photo shoot with kids is about 30 minutes long.  And I maximize that 30 minutes like you would not believe.  We are moving, trying different ideas, laughing, playing and DONE before the kids are frustrated and tired. (Some of you may be thinking, THIRTY minutes?  What can you shoot in thirty minutes?  Answer: a whole heck of A LOT–see below)

2. 30 Final Images Narrowed Down for YOU! Are you one of those parents who has thousands, I mean THOUSANDS, of images on your computer?  Do you feel lost in knowing how to choose certain ones to print?  I hear your pain.  This is why I narrow down our time to the top 30 moments of the shoot.  And I mix them up with both Color and BW toning.

3. High Res Files FOREVER! The 30 Final Images are YOURS!  (yep, you get to keep the images and print them wherever you’d like)

4. Show the Sweetness Off!  16×20 Metal Print of Your Favorite Image.  Our team is more than happy to help you pick the one photo for this Metal.  Moms have gone CRAZY over these Metal Prints since we spotlighted them on the Nate Berkus Show.  Nate LOVES these Metal prints–I LOVE these Metal Prints!  Watch the episode by clicking “Turn Your Portraits into Art.”

Me Ra has these metals all around our house, and she even has them hanging on her outside deck because they can handle rain and snow and add this wonderful design and color to our backyard.  Once you get yours, you’ll join the fan club of Metal Prints!  :)

The BIG question…What can Me Ra shoot in 30 minutes? Well, this is what she shot in 10 minutes at a recent CONFIDENCE Workshop in Seattle.

Mom had these amazing, long legs, so Me Ra walked the group through my thought process on how to set up a shot that tells this story along with the story of two generations.

Love all that JOY!!

(Within this 10 minutes, 20 plus women were watching her as Me Ra walked them through my camera settings and creative process–while trying to keep the kids entertained–mind you.  :) )

When Me Ra does your family shoot, you won’t have an audience.  :) And, she is going to pull out the individual personalities of your kids so that you feel like the story of “who they are” is found in your photos.

When Me Ra is doing a live shoot on The Nate Berkus Show, she get less than 7 minutes and ONE click for each photo–one shot, and it has to work because 2 million viewers see it.

Bottom line, a thirty minute Mini Session with your family feels like total LUXURY on her end!!  She can do ENDLESS things in thirty minutes!

Email me to pick your time slot and pre-pay!  Once you are signed up, I will email you with details, like what to wear, what to bring, how to prepare, etc.  Questions?  Don’t hesitate to email and ask!

Want more than 30 minutes?

Me Ra’s Portrait Packages start at $3K.  She comes to your home and spends up to two hours with your family, documenting the many expressions of your family being in the place you love.  If this is something you’d like to discuss, shoot me an email.  I’ve planned last minute newborn shoots on the other side of the country in 48 hours, I’m ready for you!  :)   email genie@merakoh.com.

See you in Chicago!

Much love!

Genie (and yes, I’m NOT a Fake Assistant!  Although I’d LOVE a French accent a la Nate! Oui oui!! :D

p.s.  Please keep in mind that you MUST be on time for your Mini Session.  If you are late, your time and payment will be forfeited.  Thanks for understanding and arriving early!

p.s.s.  If you are interested in Me Ra doing a Seattle Mini in early June, please email me!  genie@merakoh.com

Meet Lynda Kennedy!  She is an awesome photographer and an AMAZING Mom!

_MDP7080

I met Lynda Kennedy back in 2008 while we were both shooting in the same park in California.   While both of us were so busy, we didn’t have a lot of opportunity to get together, but I knew this woman was destined for great things.  She is a woman of pure passion and it exudes through her eyes and brilliant smile.  Her images are fantasic and I am so glad she will be with us this week on the forum so you can ask her all those important questions!  Soak in her answers to our Amazing Mom interview and join us Thursday night from 5-7pm PST on the Soarority Forum for more greatness!
Q:  When did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people?
This is a great question!  I started my business about 9 years ago … however, due to my lack of confidence, it wasn’t until 2009 that I really pursued it with all my heart. I was stuck shooting in “P” mode and that really kept me held back from the confidence to be able to charge clients for their sessions.  2009 was a great year, I found my way out of “P” mode and this was when things really began to take off for me.
Q:  What inspires your photography?
Details, color, texture – I would say these all inspire my photography.  I always try to find what is unique about the subject I’m photographing, what stands out to me about this person or family?  I try to capture ‘love’ … not just a pose.  I have discovered that texture and color inspires my style and with that I try to push myself to trying different lighting and ideas while on a shoot.

DSC_4926

Q:  What inspires you as a person/artist?
Relationship & Love inspires me as an artist.  Believe it or not, I always pray on my way to a session.  I pray for creativity and for me to be able to see who I’m capturing through the eyes of Heaven.  I want my eyes to be inspired from another perspective or view.   If I can capture what is the bond in a family or the love in a relationship … that is what I want.  If I could sneak in for a little while and catch with my camera the laughter, tenderness & fun that makes each relationship unique … aaaaaahhhh, that is the best and what I aim for.

DSC_3845-1

Q:  To help inspire our newbies..what is one or two pieces marketing/self-promotion ideas that really helped to get your name out there?
One thing I did early on to promote my business was running an ad in a local Mom’s group newsletter.  I initially ran a fairly large ad with a picture & my business info.  I didn’t get one response!  So after thinking about it, I had the idea to run a classified ad (which was free!).  I ran the classified ad saying something like, “photographer looking for children models to build portfolio” … and it worked!  I would meet local mom’s at the park photograph their children for free and then, show the pictures to the mom’s and offer prints at a discounted price.  It was a win/win for them and for me!

_DSC5177

Q:  What is the best and toughest part about doing photography while being a mom and wife at the same time?
I don’t think you could ask for a better job while being a mom and wife!  If I had to pick a hard part, it would be the time editing the pictures, but other than that it has given me the opportunity to work from home and work around my families schedules.  Sometimes I have brought my husband with me on out of town weddings, the hotel is covered by the bride and we get a little time away –  can you say bonus?!?!  I spend a lot of time volunteering  by mentoring young moms/ladies –  photographing also gives me time to spend  with these young moms that leaves me with a great sense of fulfillment and joy.  My other joy is the fact that my “job” happens to be one that is rewarding as well and I am so thankful that I get to call myself a “photographer” and make money while doing so!

DSC_6372

Q:  Is there one more piece of advice you’d give to newbies?
My advice to newbies … is to believe in yourself.  This was so huge for me.  What caused me to go from ‘program’ to ‘manual’ was believing in my heart that I could do this; somehow, someway, this was going to happen!  It had to happen for me – due to the economy, my husband had been out of work for over a year and  I needed to step up and either find a “non-fulfilling, I can’t stand my job position somewhere” or I had to really see this photography business take off.  I had taken classes, read books etc … and things just wouldn’t stick for me.  I always had this thing hanging over me that I couldn’t learn & retain f-stops, apertures, metering etc.  I found a plaque that said, “She believed she could, so she did” … this became my personal quote at the end of 2009 and that is what cause me to take my photography to another level.  If you have the passion for photography – pursue it!  Find others around you that are doing it, find resources that help you, find what is your personal style & believe you can do this!

_DSC5459

Q:  What are the classes/workshops/DVDs/books that you’ve watched or read to teach yourself photography? Were they helpful?
Here are some of the resources that helped me:  Search the web – find other photographers that you like – study their composition. Don’t try to be them, but find inspiration through them.  I attended classes and workshops in my area.  I put myself “out there” by introducing myself to other successful photographers and would let them critique my work.  I was a second shooter at weddings so I could learn and begin to get my “feet wet”.  Me Ra’s DVD’s were HUGE in getting me from “P” to “M” – she spoke my language and taught it in a way that caused it to stick for me.  Me Ra’s confidence workshop is awesome — it is an investment that is well worth it!  Another great tool is “Photovision” by Ed Pierce.
Q:  Can you tell us a fun back story behind this GREAT  photo!

DSC_1979-1

I just photographed another home birth … talk about amazing!  I stopped by the next morning to photograph big sister Jade seeing her baby sister for the first time.
Q:  What type of camera equipment did you have when you first started shooting portraits? And what have you added to your camera bag since then?
Starting off I had one camera (nikon D70) and one lens (Tamaron28-200).  I bought my next camera body (Nikon D300) used off of Craigslist; I also purchased 2 used Nikon lenses (85mm 1.8/ 17-55mm 2.8).  I also own a Nikon 50mm 1.8 and a 80-200mm 2.8.

_DSC8085

Q:  How did you find out about Me Ra and the SOAR! community?
I found Me Ra by searching the web for photographers.  I saw that she did the confidence workshops and although I wanted to go, I thought chances would be slim that it could ever happen for me.  By following her blog, I applied the first time she did the Soar! contest and although I wasn’t one of the ladies chosen … I still found my wings to Soar!  I was able to attend a workshop (again by believing!) and she is who you think she is … such an inspiration.  Thanks Me Ra, for finding your heart and causing others to soar into their dreams you are a bit of heaven on earth!
P.S.  Don’t forget…we are so fortunate to have time with Lynda tomorrow night on the SOARORITY forum for this month’s Ask and Learn Session from 5-7pm PST.   See you there!

This contest is all about acknowledging their beauty, even when they are Running on Empty.

Running on Empty

“Here’s how it works!

In honor of how wonderful moms are and all that they do and give, Brian and I keep one spot reserved in every workshop for a special mom like YOU! That’s right, you (or she) will get a free pass to the upcoming CONFIDENCE! Workshop in the Seattle area!

We’ll collect all the nominees, have a committee of wonderful moms vote, and then announce the winner in the next two weeks!

Deadline for ALL nominations is Friday, April 22nd at 6pm PST. Nominations MUST be posted as a comment on this blog post.  Nominations emailed or posted on other blog posts may be overlooked. Please post all nominees here. Thanks! (A tip: write in Word or other program first, then cut and paste over – just in case.:))

The Gibbon Apes were singing in my dreams the other night.  I could hear their whooping sounds echoing through the jungles of Thailand as the sun rose in the distance.  The morning heat was already thick, and I pushed back the vegetation with hopes of seeing the Gibbons up in the jungle’s canopy.  They spotted me as they moved through the trees, every so often turning to see if I was following.

A small hand holds mine.  I look down.  Pascaline is in my dream.  She is smiling at my side.  We are not worried about mosquito bites that can give us Dengue Fever.  I’m not concerned with how remote we are.  I am fully caught up in the pull I feel, the call I hear to venture home–a home where my heart unfolds and I feel beautiful, alive and replenished.

I’ve been carrying that dream inside me for months, unsure of how to act.  On one hand, I am terrified of the idea of going back.  I couldn’t even talk about it with Brian.  The Dengue Fever and all it’s pain still feels close.  I hesitate to see the bed that I twisted and turned in, night after night, with bone breaking pain that left me and Pascaline delirious for days.  I don’t want to recall the memory of Brian and I holding Pascaline down, as she screamed with fierceness because she believed her nose had broken off.

Instead, I want to be lulled to sleep by the soft purring of the long tail boats that head out to fish in the evening.  I want to close my eyes and hear the Cicada beetles singing, so loud and so powerfully, that I can’t hear my own thoughts any longer as I drown in their song.  I want to watch my kids play with the Langur Monkeys, who with white faces, turn the head back and forth, trying to assess our funny habits of living–watching me shower every morning.  I want to break out in laughter, clinging to Brian under the mosquito net, as we watch the big fruit bats swoop over our heads and pray that they won’t rip through the thin white divider that separates us.  I want to wake to the Gibbons sunrise songs, make my way to the lonely, blue waters, and swim–feeling all my senses awaken.

Is it worth the risk of a mosquito bite carrying Dengue Fever–again?  Odds are that it will not happen again, but those were the odds before.  Are all the things I love and miss, the things that make our home on stilts in the jungle worth the unknown that awaits us?

Six weeks ago.  We are finishing up dinner.  Brian poses the question of returning.  Pascaline sits quiet.  She ponders the question.  I can tell she is recalling her own memories of being sick, and then her big brown eyes look up at me with wonder.  “I miss the jungle mom.  I miss running through the trees and then realizing the monkeys were right above you all along.  I miss playing in the water.  I miss the Thai people calling me Gasoline because they can’t say Pascaline!  I miss the jungle singing me to sleep.  Yes,” she looks at Brian, “Yes, I think it’s worth the risk.”

My brave little one.  Her courage leads the way.

This morning I get in from NY at 10am.  Tonight at 8pm, we board a plane to Thailand.  I have pictured myself backing out a hundred times.  But as a family, we have decided to return to our house in the jungle.  We are all a little unsure of what it will feel like when the first mosquito bites.  But in our hearts, we know that the idea of avoiding this second home–this place our family has come to love…is not an option.

Brian, Blaze, Pascaline and I sat in the living room together and recommitted to traveling abroad–to taking risks–understanding more than ever that some trips will be WONDERFUL, but not all trips.  And yet, every trip will shape us into the creative people we were meant to be.

I fell asleep last night with a smile that came from deep within.  I’m returning home.  And even though fear gripped me when Brian first proposed the question…peace greets me now.  The time has come.  It is a deep peace that waits for me on the water’s edge, where the jungle grows tall and the apes play and sing in the canopy, and the heat is thick and the laughter and singing and dreaming are all rich.

I will see you on the other side friends!  While we make our way back home, taking four planes and a long tail boat, Genie and Wendy have wonderful things up their sleeves for the blog this week.

I’ll be updating you from the jungle soon!  Cheers to not living in fear!

How do we capture a Family Portrait that flatters mom, shows off dad’s strength and excitement, highlights beautiful baby, and most of all, is a photo that carries a message of LOVE?  How do we do it?  We break it down, piece by piece.

Before we even lift the camera to our face and start shooting, we stand back and assess the family; notice their features, profiles, where the light is coming from, their connection with each other, their comfort level with the camera, how to put them at ease, etc.

With the camera still down at our side, we try different set ups to see what position will flatter everyone the most.  I’ll try three or four different ideas until I feel it inside “Yes, that’s it!”

Now that we can “see” the shot, we are ready to start bringing our camera into the mix.  Taking the time to Pause, ask the above questions and try different poses, gives you a chance to really dig in to the story of this couple and their personal energy with each other.

One of the key questions is “how tight can we can get on the three subjects?”  The tightness in framing adds a sense of intimacy to their photo’s story.

As I walked our SEATTLE CONFIDENCE women through this process, I took a couple sample shots so the ladies could see what I was envisioning.

Then I step back and let them run with their own ideas.  And wow.  Look at what these women created!

Charlene Marie Ondak had dad shift his gaze slightly.  Then she put her focus more on the baby’s face.  Just GORGEOUS family shot.  Charlene, “YEAH!!!  SO GREAT!”

Jill Hansen did a BEAUTIFUL job!  I love how we don’t see the full body or head of either parents, the little we do see tells us EVERY THING we need to know.  So much love in this photo.  Great job Jill!  I know you love being a dentist, but your talents obviously don’t stop there!

Jenell Tamaela worked with the same family and was also tight in her framing.  In this photo, we don’t see any background at all.  The parents are the background and foundation of this little one.  It takes courage to get in super tight when you aren’t used to it.  But try practicing with subjects of your own.  See how little of the parents you need to communicate the story of your photo?  (Jenell, WONDERFUL!)

This last one is a favorite by Shelly Bergin.  There is WONDERFUL energy in this photo–both parents are elated with their little one.  We feel drawn into the moment, as if we can even hear dad talking and laughing.  This photo has an editorial/newspaper feel, a day-in-the-life, type energy.  Fantastic Shelly!  Just FANTASTIC!

The next time you do a Family Portrait with a Baby, start with a pause.  Before you lift the camera up and start shooting, assess all the dynamics and details around your subjects.  Have them shift and try different poses.  Don’t be afraid to have them try four or five different poses–remember, this is about Creating.  You get to create something new with every family.  When you see the story, like a subtle flickering, as you watch them relate and coo over their little one, run with it.  That’s the story you want to capture!  That is the story that is their own.

Again, wonderful, wonderful job SEATTLE CONFIDENCE ladies!!  So proud of YOU!

xoxo,

m
