For the last two months, I’ve had the honor of being the Photo Judge for a wonderful website called Our365.

Our365 has two different platforms.  First, one in every four women who have a baby in the hospital have Our365 photographers take their baby’s first hospital photo (Remember that sweet hospital photo of your little one swaddled with the hospital cap on?  That’s the photo!).  Second, many of these new moms want to join a community that helps support the first year, 365 days, of their baby’s life.  Our365′s website and newsletter is filled with wonderful tips from your baby’s health to caring for your baby to developmental changes to expect and more!  When you sign up for their newsletter, you fill out how old your baby is and they send you tips based on your baby’s age!  Their newsletter reaches over 1.25 million new moms!  Yes, 1.25 million!!  Isn’t that AMAZING!

I connected with Our365′s team through Random House.  They were kind enough to do a book giveaway of “Your Baby in Pictures” (which is still selling strong thanks to many of you!).  We continued the conversation, and I’ve been given the honor of being their Photo Judge every month for their Photo Contests!  They tell me the theme for the month, and I write a shortened version of a Photo-Recipe from “Your Baby in Pictures” to inspire their readers.  It’s been a wonderful partnership!

Check out the last two Baby Mama and Baby Papa Photo-Recipes and all the great photo submissions!

If you have a baby between 0-12 months, check out this month’s Photo-Recipe and enter the Photo Contest!  The theme is Water Baby!

Starts today!

Now we’re off to teach our Photo Coaching Intensive Workshop and have a Mexican dinner afterwards with the ladies!  Can’t wait!  (Pray it doesn’t rain!  :) )

xoxo,

m

While in Chicago last month, one of our workshop attendees booked a Mini Session for her family.  But when her family couldn’t make it, she decided to use the session as an opportunity to have a Self Portrait Photo Shoot done of her.  A FABULOUS IDEA!

I LOVE self portrait work.  I love the process of collaborating with my subject to capture a photo that best represents their current season in life.   To start our process, I sent Dana four or five reflective questions to answer and send back.  A couple of the questions were;

  1. In this current season, how do you see yourself as a woman?  (i.e., strong, courageous, open, solid, quiet, unfolding, etc.)
  2. Where do you see your journey or process going?

Based on her answers to the above questions and a couple more I sent her, I had a much deeper sense of what direction we wanted to explore for her Self Portrait.  Before I started shooting, we talked about her answers and how we might visualize the words through imagery.  Together, we created a series of photos that are symbolic of where she finds herself in this season of life.

For question number one, Dana used the following words to describe herself;  strong- tough and tender- looking for my own place in the world.  Since she loves yoga, we incorporated this practice into her shoot.  Here are a few of my favorite photos that show Dana’s words.

STRONG

TOUGH

but TENDER

LOOKING FOR MY OWN SENSE OF WELL BEING (this is my favorite!)

Dana had never tried a handstand without a wall to help her balance.  Look at how she rocked it!  This is my favorite photo of the series because I can imagine her children, and even future grandchildren, drawing strength from this image.  To someday see this photo and know their mom was actively looking and working toward her own sense of well being, that she saw herself worthy of that process…wow, what a legacy to leave.

Thank you SO MUCH Dana for this wonderful Mini Session.  Your honesty to the questions I emailed you, the conversations we had during the shoot, your willingness to explore and collaborate together…it all unfolded the most amazing photo shoot.  It was such a honor to do this shoot for you.

Much, much love,

m

Every time we hold a CONFIDENCE Workshop a number of the women tell me in all the months leading up to the conference, Genie blessed them beyond belief.

(Isn’t she gorgeous! Photo by Julie Watts)

Who is Genie?

Genie not only handles the bazillion different logistics that go into holding our workshops, but she seems to befriend each and every lady who registers!  She remembers their stories, details about their life and in a phone call or email becomes their girlfriend forever. If there are crazy storms in the Midwest, she remembers that single lady in our CONFIDENCE Workshop who is living closest to the storms, and she emails her to check in and see if she is okay.   How does she do it?!

Genie wearing bunny ears at a CONFIDENCE Wkshp!

On top of overseeing our CONFIDENCE Workshops, Genie also helps me with responding to emails.  Every day, we receive the most wonderful, heartfelt emails from so many of you.  If I’m not able to respond, Genie is there to email every single person back so you know your words have landed with us and are treasured and appreciated.  So many people have responded with surprise, saying they never expected to hear back from anyone and then Genie surprised them with the sweetest response.  That is our Genie!

A few years ago, I knew I needed someone to join our team who would help extend a virtual hug, word of encouragement, or even a simple “great job” to our growing community.  So much of what Me Ra Koh Media is about is loving on you, cheer leading you, laughing with you, and recognizing the courageous steps you take (regardless of how small or big) toward your dreams.  I started praying for someone who would help enrich the experience women have as they come into contact with us.  It’s a tall order, and I had no idea how I’d find this person.  But it’s amazing what happens when you voice your desires.  Genie and I met at a women’s leadership conference in San Francisco through the Wisdom Connection.   I fell in love with her and asked her to join our crazy team.  She said yes, and the rest is history.

I love this wonderful wise and giving woman with all my heart.  She represents me and what my heart’s mission is with such incredible integrity.  She works with Brian to keep things moving forward, and she often checks in on me like an older sister looking out for her younger sister.  I am so honored to have her on our team, as a part of this family.

In one sense, I don’t know what we’d do without her.  But that sentence feels like it only acknowledges the work she does for us.   It’s “how” Genie does the work.  It’s the way Genie enriches our company.  She makes our work, our mission, so much more rich and potent.  She brings her whole self to the table.  And that is the gift that I treasure beyond measure.

Genie, with June being your birthday month, I want to take a moment on the blog to honor and celebrate the wonderful, beautiful gift that you are to me and Brian.  But from all the emails and workshop responses, you are clearly not just a gift to us but to countless women in this community.  Thank you so much for being generous in spreading your “Genie magic” on all of us.  We are all better people for it.

We love and adore you girl!

Me Ra and Brian

*Leave Genie a special birthday message today!*

If you are one of those lucky women that have been blessed by Genie’s personal touch, will you leave her a special note in today’s comments to celebrate her?  Thank you!

I couldn’t resist!  Little did you know, Genie loves to hula and PERFORMS!  I found this little snapshot on her FB page.  :)   So darling!!  Even though the photo is blurred, she is still GLOWING!

Adobe is one of our big SOAR! Scholarship Partners.  We are so thankful to have their constant support for empowering women in photography.  So when they called to see if I could do an interview for them, I was totally honored!

Photoshop.com is one of their educational resources for photographers of all levels with videos for Lightroom, tutorials to editing images, etc.  A part of this site is also dedicated to keeping you inspired!  This section is called “Spotlights: Get Inspired by the Innovators”.

This was a wonderful interview, and I LOVED some of the questions they asked like; What Piece of Equipment Can’t I Live Without and Why, What’s the Best Advice I Ever Received, How Do I See My Career and Business Evolving Over the Next Five Years and Who Inspires Me as a Photographer?  (Can you guess the answer to the last one?  :)   That was my FAVORITE question!)  Those are just a few of the questions you’ll find in this interview!

Meet Jess Robertson.  She is an a fantastic  photographer and is soon to be an AMAZING Mama!

Jess is a wedding and lifestyle photographer from southern California who has followed her dreams and passions and now has a full-time photography business.  And yes my friends, IT ALL STARTED WITH ME RA AND A CONFIDENCE WORKSHOP!!  She and her hubby are expecting their first child and we are so excited for them.  Tune in tomorrow, June 23rd from 5-7pm PST, on the Soarority Forum,  as she shares how she got her business not only off the ground but into a full-time career!  She has also started “The Artist’s Way” morning pages.  I love reading about this on her blog!  She is amazing!

Q.  When did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people?
I just started my business in April of 2010.  I attended Me Ra’s workshop in Orange County and had the “a-ha” moment I had been waiting for my whole life :)  My husband still talks about me calling him after that first day of the workshop, and how he has never heard me talk that passionately about anything in the 9 years we’ve known each other.  I called a friend the next day who had just had her baby, and I scheduled my first photo shoot for that week!  I ended up doing about 5 more sessions over the next month for friends (free of charge) in order to build up a portfolio and design a website, then I immediately started charging people.

Q.  What inspires your photography?  What made you fall in love with photography?
It’s always the people that I work with that ultimately inspire my photography.  I love stories.  I’ve loved stories since I was a little kid.  So, I can’t think of any greater honor than getting to know the stories of the families and couples that I work with and help tell their stories through images.

Even though I’ve been taking pictures since I was very young, I specifically fell in love with photography while backpacking across Europe in 2007.  I spent so much time just watching people and became fascinated with capturing these moments that were happening all around me.  A little boy running through a sea of pigeons in the Piazza San Marco in Venice.  An old man playing the clarinet in Dublin, Ireland.  A mom walking with her little girl around Buckingham Palace.  Sure, I probably looked like I stalker, but I didn’t care :) When I got home, I purchased a few books on photography and shared my experience with people, but life got in the way.  It wasn’t until October of 2009 that photography came back into the picture (no pun intended!).  My husband, also a wonderful photographer, got the Canon 5D at work and brought it home for my birthday weekend.  We took a little road trip and stopped at spots along the way so that I could practice, and I fell in love all over again.  But it wasn’t until I attended Me Ra’s workshop a few months later that everything fell into place for me.

Q.  What inspires you as a person, artist?
Beauty, Love, Authenticity, Relationships.  Capturing a new mom breastfeeding her one week old baby.  Capturing one of the most important days in the lives of a couple.  Capturing life’s everyday moments as art.  I could not love what I do more!  I am constantly inspired by the amazing artists that I look up to, my photographer friends, and the people that I have the joy of photographing.  I am so thankful for the relationships that I have as a result of pursuing my passion.

Q.  What is one or two pieces marketing/self-promotion ideas that you can give our newbies?
Tune in Thursday on the SOARORITY Forum from 5-7pm PST, where I will answer this one :)

Q.  If you are not behind the camera photographing fantastic people, what might we find you doing?
Well, I’m currently 11 weeks pregnant, so I’ve been too sick to do anything lately!  But any other time, you would probably find me at a coffee shop or hanging out with my awesome husband & puppy.  I also love to write, and I’m currently working on a couple of scripts with my younger brother.  And I’m a major movie buff, so I like to be at the theater on opening night for most new releases.  I realize this obsession will need to come to an end soon, but it will be replaced with spending time with our son/daughter so I’m okay with that :)

Q.  What is one of the best things you have done for the success of your business?
Tune in Thursday on the SOARORITY Forum from 5-7pm PST, where I will answer this one :)

Q.  What are the classes/workshops/DVDs/books or websites that you’ve watched or read to teach yourself photography? Were they helpful?
Wow, where do I start?!  The list has gotten pretty long over the year :)  I started with Me Ra’s DVDs, which were a huge help! Her Confidence Workshop, as I mentioned earlier, was the kick in the rear I needed to get my business going.  Chase Jarvis’ creativeLIVE (http://www.creativelive.com/) is AMAZING!  He has workshops available that you can view live or download, and all of the courses feature awesome people in various aspects of the industry.  In addition, I constantly network with other photographers, both locally and internationally.  Facebook, Twitter & the B School (http://www.thebschool.com/) are all great resources for networking. And the group of women that I met at Me Ra’s workshop last year have all been an incredible help and inspiration. Those of us that are local still try to get together once a month and catch up, do a photography exercise & share new things that we’ve learned.  Recently, I’ve been using Me Ra’s book “Your Baby in Pictures” to supplement the photography lessons I teach, and it’s another great tool!

Q.  Can you tell us a fun back story behind this GREAT  photo!

I actually took this photo almost a year ago, but it’s still one of my favorites :)  I was doing a session with this little girl, Eden, and her adorable brother in the backyard of their home.  Mom was inside making dinner and dad was doing some yard work.  I had brought bubbles along (something that works great for shoots with young kids!), but I was having a hard time keeping the kids attention, blowing bubbles, and capturing any good photos.  Haha!  Dad saw me struggling a little and came over and offered to blow the bubbles.  And this was the very first image I captured.  I just love the action & the look on Eden’s face!

Q.  What type of camera equipment did you have when you first started shooting portraits? And what have you added to your camera bag since then?
Tune in Thursday on the SOARORITY Forum from 5-7pm PST, where I will answer this one :)

Q.  How do you know about Me Ra and the SOAR! community?
I first found out about Me Ra from a friend that used her as her wedding photographer.  I still remember the first time I saw her blog.  The way she captured life made me look at photography differently than I ever had before.  I became an avid follower of her blog.  When she announced one of her first workshops in Seattle, I wanted to go SO bad!  I had no way of affording it at the time, however, and I didn’t even own my own camera so I couldn’t justify going.  I continued following all of her adventures and just knew that one day I would have a chance to go to a workshop. A few years later, I was sitting with my friend/co-worker (also a photographer) when Me Ra announced her latest Confidence Workshop dates. One of them was only an hour away from us!  We both went home and talked to our husbands, and they both agreed that we could go :)  And the rest is history!

I am so completely inspired by her passion! WOW!!!  I can’t wait for her to answer your questions on tomorrow night’s Ask and Learn Session on the Soarority Forum.  See you all there.  5-7pm PST

Have a good day!
Wendy, your SOAR! Coordinator

On June 13th 2006, I wrote the first sentence to my first blog post;

“My first blog…the pressure almost makes you never want to start one. But here I am because I know I’m going to love this once I get the hang of it!”

Can you hear the anxiety in my voice?  I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But after five years, ONE THOUSAND posts, and 22, 960 of your comments, I have come to LOVE this daily conversation with you much more than I could have ever imagined.  As you can see from my first blog sentence, the idea of starting  this (whatever “this” would become) felt daunting, but I thought it might be a wonderful way to combine my love of writing with my passion for photography.  In those first months, I had five visitors; Brian, me, my mom, me and me.  :)   Five years later, there are 50K plus unique visitors a month who meet me here, every morning, as we push through our doubts and fears to live our dreams.

With today being the 1000th post, I spent some time looking over the blog’s last five years.  Wow, what a transformation.  The most rewarding part is that the transformation has not only been in my life but many of yours too.  I want to start today’s special 1000 post by celebrating some of you.

Do you remember Shawna?  I will always remember this amazing mom who shared her story of having her car repossessed right before her first photo shoot.  Everything inside her wanted to quit, but instead she borrowed a car and went for it.

When I feel intimidation loom over me, I think of Shawna and she gives me strength.  You can read Shawna’s inspiring story here!

Lynda Kennedy’s video is another story that sticks out to me.  She is a woman determined to beat all odds.  Even though she didn’t win the SOAR! Scholarship, she pushed through her disappointment and found herself soaring with her photography dream.

When I feel foolish for pouring my heart into something that doesn’t pan out, Lynda’s story reminds me that our honest efforts are never wasted, not one second of our time has been in vain. If you haven’t, you must watch Lynda’s video, an amazing story of determination!

Last year, we took the kids and did a photography workshop for an orphanage in Cambodia.  I will never forget the experience of trying to explain Aperture through a translator.  The most GLORIOUS fun!  Sreyown Sun was the only female student.  As we went into the city for some hands-on learning, I watched Sreyown light up with the camera.

The only camera understanding she had was our last two hours of teaching.  Her photos were AMAZING–completely out-of-the-box.  When I feel intimated by all the things I don’t know to pursue my dream–when those lies come and say “You aren’t qualified ENOUGH to pursue that”, I think of Sreyown’s raw passion and joy–two things that are more powerful than any knowledge we can possess.

As I look over the last five years, I am so deeply moved and thankful for all of you.  We have approached the looming mountains of our impossible dreams, looked at each other, and have decided to still give it a try.  Because how will we ever know if we don’t try?  Together, we have made the word “try” a sacred practice whether it’s the new mom who emails me her results from a Photo-Recipe from Your Baby in Pictures or the 20 plus women

who gather in cities across the country for our CONFIDENCE Workshops and produce images that inspire us and remind them that a creative outlet is something they are worthy of!

Authenticity has been at the heart of my vision for this blog.  A safe place to grow and flourish has been my hope for our community that gathers here.  If you are new to the blog, I welcome you with all my heart.  I am so excited for you to journey through past posts and meet women, like yourself, who are living their fullest, creative lives.

To all of you who veteran visitors to this blog, thank you for journeying with me.  Thank you for every comment–yes, I read them all and they mean SO MUCH!  Thank you for giving me a place to be transparent as I try to climb my own impossible dreams.

It’s been wonderful to look back at the different posts I’ve written.  As much as I love writing the Photo-Recipes and Photo Tips posts,  I treasure the posts under Personal Reflections and Inspiration for Artists.  In those categories lives the stories of all the nerves that were pulsing through me before my first Nate Berkus Show appearance. Or the posts about taking the kids to Thailand to live in the jungle (and how that has TRANSFORMED our family) to Dealing with Criticism, the Guilt and Lies Moms Face, Regaining Our Power When We Feel Powerless, a Woman’s Power During Uncertain Financial Times, Working at Not Judging Our First Flights and Learning How to Swim with Sharks.

As photographers we sometimes get caught up in striving to have sharp photos–placing the photo’s value not on content but clarity.  And yet the creative journey, the path to allowing our creative selves to expand, is often unclear.  We face our dreams with a blurred photo in our hand of what we think we are pursuing.

There are no guarantees.  At times we look foolish and don’t make any sense to those around us, even ourselves.  But if we quiet ourselves, our nerves, our anxious thoughts, our second guessing, we will hear the strong, unstoppable pulse of life that is underground.  Creation always starts in the dark–whether it is the baby growing inside our womb or the seedlings breaking through the garden’s soil–we are more prepared for this journey than we realize.

We are stronger than we know.

And we have each other to help us go forward when we forget all these truths.

Thank you for being here through 1000 posts.  Cheers to 1000 more to come!

All my love and appreciation,

Me Ra

p.s.  The Street Portrait Challenge conversation is gathering on the SOARORITY forum with your fearless leader, Ariane Hunter, at 5pm PST tonight!  Upload your photos, be inspired by what other people shot and experienced.  And a big hug to Ariane, another woman who leads this community in living our fullest creative lives!

Jealousy is a Map!

As I work on a special blog post for tomorrow (Post #1000!!!), I thought I’d share my morning reading with you from Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way.  Today’s passage is like the perfect dose of vitamins for creative nourishment as we start our Monday!

“Jealousy is a map.  Each of our jealousy maps differs.  Each of us will probably be surprised by some of the things we discover on our own.  Jealousy is always a mask for fear:  fear that we aren’t able to get what we want;  frustration that somebody else seems to be getting what is rightfully ours even if we are too frightened to reach for it.  At its root, jealous is a stingy emotion.  It doesn’t allow for the abundance and multiplicity of the universe.  Jealousy tells us there is room for only one–one poet, one painter, (one photographer), one whatever you dream of being.  The truth, revealed by action in the direction of our dreams, is that there is room for all of us.”

Wow.  It’s the middle of the last sentence that hits me…”The truth, revealed by action in the direction of our dreams…”.

To get out from under jealousy, to be able to breathe deeply and feel your creative self expand, action in the direction of YOUR dream is needed.  Action…

What is one small action you can make today to help you stand

against the the trap of jealousy while bringing you a step closer to your dream?

xoxo,

m

Her Results!

I received the most wonderful email this week from a past CONFIDENCE workshop attendee.  This is what she wrote;

This is Maggie!  I attended your San Antonio CONFIDENCE workshop last fall.  One of the reasons I wanted to attend the workshop was so I could capture great shots of my kids.  I was especially excited about taking newborn shots of my new baby when she was born.  Well, Mary Kate was born on May 16th.  I thought I’d share one of my favorite photos I captured of her.

Wow!!  Maggie, Brian, myself, Genie and the San Antonio CONFIDENCE Workshop want to wish you the BIGGEST congratulations! Mary Kate is BEAUTIFUL!!!  I LOVE that the CONFIDENCE Workshop empowered you!  Girl, YOU TOOK THAT PHOTO!!!  I’m sure every one agrees that your birth announcement photo is just GORGEOUS!!!

Many congrats Maggie!!

You asked.

They are going to do it!

The number one request received from CONFIDENCE Grads is to do a follow up workshop dedicated to Photo Coaching.  Well ladies, it’s time!  If you are a CONFIDENCE Grad REGISTER HERE!!  There are only a few spots left!

In 2007, Brian and Me Ra coined the term “Photo Coaching” in a standing room only seminar in Los Angeles, CA.  Me Ra knew that she would NEVER be the “silent, fly on the wall” photographer.  There were seminars on posing or photo journalism photography, but what about the bride who wanted help, and yet, didn’t want to look posed?  Even if she wanted to be photo-journalistic photographer, she felt their clients needed help, guidance…what she called photo coaching in how to relax in front of the camera.  Together, Me Ra and Brian, started coming up with a BIG bag of photo coaching techniques and little set ups (or tricks :) ) to help their clients not only be at ease in front of the camera but have FUN!  Their seminar of Photo Coaching was such a hit that photographers emailed them with their photo results for the next few years!  But more importantly, when clients referred them to friends, it was the Photo Coaching piece they talked about the most!

Capturing the joy, laughter, quiet moments and total surprise reactions became the signature style behind Me Ra and Brian’s wedding work that took them to shooting million dollar, televised weddings.  But whether your bride is on a tight budget or has a million dollars to spend, everyone feels self conscious when the camera comes out.  What can you, as the photographer, do to change that?  Come join Me Ra and Brian for a special Photo Coaching Workshop on June 29th in Seattle and find out!

What Photo Coaching for Weddings (an Intense Mini Workshop)
Who: CONFIDENCE Grads only (for now).  Brush up on those CONFIDENCE notes ladies, we are going to be pushing our meter the whole time!
When :  Wednesday, June 29th
Where:   Two Locations in Seattle.  The first half will be downtown and focused on integrating Photo Coaching with an urban scene and tricky lighting.  The second half will be in a wheat field, just in time for sunset, with a whole different landscape to play with!  We will email attendees the exact locations next week!
Time:   4pm-8pm
Cost: $350 per attendee  (There are only a few spots left!  How did it fill up so fast since we are just now blogging about it?  Me Ra first released registration to those who had commented on her FB wall when she posted the topic as a gesture of thank them for their feedback, and then on Friday she released registration to our newsletter peeps.  If you aren’t following her FB page or signed up for her newsletter, make sure you do for more goodies!  See the right hand margin, sign up spot, on www.merakoh.com main page.)

Schedule for Wednesday, June 29th

You will meet Me Ra and Brian at a location in downtown Seattle.  You may want to leave a bit early so you have enough time to find parking and get to the location on time.  Me Ra is going to do a review on shooting in manual with the camera’s meter as our guide.  Remember that second morning of the CONFIDENCE Workshop?  She is going to WORK that muscle!  :)   Me Ra and Brian will demonstrate some of their favorite Photo Coaching techniques with the bride and groom models.  The group will then split into smaller groups and be assigned their own bride and groom with a shooting assignment.  Me Ra and Brian will then float from group to group and “up the challenge” as needed.

The second half will be at a wheat field location that is about 10-15 minute drive.  Me Ra and Brian want to work with you on sunset lighting, metering, and taking advantage of a complete opposite landscape to draw out a different romantic feel and energy.  Together, Me Ra and Brian, will walk you through their strategies (while entertaining you.  :) )  But again, you will be split into groups and given the opportunity to put their techniques into practice.

Once we get our last few attendees registered, we will send out an email to all of you with directions to both locations!  It’s already shaping up to be such an AWESOME group of CONFIDENCE Grads!!  Me Ra and Brian can’t wait to see all of you!!! What do you think about doing a big group dinner afterwards for anyone who is interested in processing your time together?  (please note that dinner would not be included in the workshop cost)
