Wednesday is often our day to feature an Amazing Mom–a woman who is real and going after life with courage and kids in tow.  Today, I’ve got one of the most AMAZING moms ever.  My grandma!

I had the most wonderful lunch with my grandma last week.  Just the two of us.  She turned eighty this year and is more beautiful than ever!

There is nothing like time with your grandma.  They have this amazing gift for loving on you.  If you were the President of the United States or a struggling college student, they would love you just the same–through and through.  She filled me up in ways that no one else can, and I couldn’t help but wonder why I let life get so busy and not make more time for the two of us.

I mean here she is at eighty, and she drove herself to the Verizon store months ago and got herself an iPad.  She is the texting QUEEN!  She knows more text abbreviations than I even know the meaning for!

And she’s on Facebook!  I can’t help but think what a conscious choice it was for her to step into the arena of all this technology and find her way.  Without any of us knowing, she signed herself up for classes on how to write and send emails, surf the web, all of it.  Just amazes me.  My grandma has every reason in the world to not adapt, but she mustered up the courage to step into the unfamiliar.  And now I’m blessed to get little love notes left by her on my Facebook page, and Pascaline has a “textpal” with her GiGiMa.

When I asked her if she had any special plans for the next five years, she laughed.  But then she started listing off all the places she wants to go and things she plans to do before she turns eighty five.  She has serious plans.  Could I answer that question with such clarity and confidence if someone asked me?

After I dropped her off, I got to thinking…it can be so easy to get stuck in our ways.  It can be so tempting to decide you are only going to approach life one way because that is the way you’ve always done it.  But what if, what if you opened yourself up to trying things you’ve never tried–even if you weren’t sure you’d find success–but just for the sake of trying.

I’m thinking, if my eighty year old grandma can learn to text–what can the rest of us do?

(love you grandma!)

Yes, Brian and I finally entered the 21st century and got iPhones.  As a photographer, I almost feel embarrassed on how long it has taken us to get one.  I feel like I have to justify myself and tell all my photo friends that AT&T didn’t have coverage in our home so we had no choice but to wait for Verizon.  But I don’t really have to share all that, right?!  :)

But SERIOUSLY…I am going CRAZY over the photo apps.  I mean CRAZY!!!  I LOVE THEM!!

Blaze had his last baseball game last Saturday, and I was so giddy about taking photos with my iPhone that one of the moms asked if I had just bought it that morning.  To funny!  I won’t bombard you with ALL the photos I took, but here are my top three!

I am so crazy about this kid!

And my FAVORITE!

It’s kind of fun to not have to think about camera settings and just play with composition!  I was thinking about the Third’s Principle a lot, and seeing how far I could push the envelope.  It was also fun having the space of a square for composition.  Just those two factors, the Third’s Principle and having a square image to work with, got my creative juices going.  Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that recharges our creative energy.  Not to mention all those filters!

On our drive home, I took this little gem!  I love that the shutter dragged on this enough to blur the tree in the foreground.

And one little MISSY snuck in the car with mom’s iPhone and took this self portrait (so classic!).

Just Hilarious.  She doesn’t know that I found this yet.  :)

So TELL ME, what are your favorite Photo Apps!!

The Status of YOU!

Today is a little bit of a long one.  Some of you know what that means.  :)

Brian sent me away this last Monday and Tuesday for two nights of being alone.  I had no idea how lonely I was for myself–how much I missed time with just me.  Does that make sense?  I slept in past noon! I had no idea I was that tired.  I spent time writing pages and pages–and it wasn’t for anyone or anything but me.

I had no idea there was that much stuff that needed to come out of me.  It’s amazing how life can keep moving right along and without realizing it, you slowly lose touch with the status of YOU.

I’m on a mission this summer, and the mission is ME.  We have a break from our normal travel schedule, and I decided that this summer was going to be about replenishing and taking care of me.  Sounds selfish as I type it, but I know I’m not any good to my the ones I love if I don’t take care of me.  So a summer of focusing on me…sounds even dreamy–until the rubber hits the road.

I called up Fay, one of our SOAR! Business Coaches, and asked for help.  She came up from San Francisco and spent three days in our home “looking for where energy is leaking in our family culture that doesn’t need too”.  I thought “How fun! Happy kids, awesome husband, what can she find?!”  Good Lord, little did I know how exposed I would FEEL!

In the weeks to come, I’ll be sharing more of my revelations with Fay, but one of my favorite pearls of wisdom from her time with us was us a Family Calendar.  A big, BIG, family calendar that everyone can access and see and is easy to change/update.  Why?  She noticed one evening that Blaze asked me 4 or 5 times what was happening in the next few days.  Answering his question, repetitively, took so much energy out of me that could be better used in other ways if we had a family calendar for him to access.  So simple, right?  And yet, it’s rocking our family culture at home.

So, I’m working on the status of ME and what I’m finding is a mixed bag.  I’ve learned that the numbness in my hands is the beginnings of carpal tunnel, and that my Iron Stores and Adrenals are depleted.  I’m realizing how important Acupuncture is for the future of my hands, writing and photography.  I’m seeing the need to bite the bullet and invest in supplements that restore my Iron, Adrenals, and overall health.  I’m being transformed by the heat of Bikram yoga and finding I need quiet space more than ever.  Like I shared in my keynote at EVO, I need space to go underground, to sit in mystery and fill my own creative spirit.

To stay in a place of creativity, I have to be able to retreat and find quiet.  I’ve known this but am coming to really know it this summer.  So now how do we shift our family culture and business model to design spaces of retreat and quiet?  Life feels too full to make this happen.  But why not try!  That’s the question we are trying on for size this summer.

I’ve got BIG dreams ladies, SUPER BIG DREAMS!  And I’m thinking I need to revisit this idea of being intimately involved with the status of ME so I can continue to walk forward in my heart’s passion which is the status of YOU!

How about you?  Do you feel aware or unaware of the status of you?  What steps do you take to reconnect with yourself, your own well being?

xo,

m

Meet Tacey Gosling-A Fantastic Photographer and an AMAZING Mom!

I am so excited to hear from Tacey Gosling on the Ask and Learn Session tomorrow night.  I don’t know Tacey very well, but from the few emails that we have exchanged to get ready for this blog post and the Ask and Learn, I know, she would be an immediate friend.  Her photography is INSANE!  Her images are so fresh, dreamy and relaxing.  I love that the first thing on her website says…”I want to be the photographer of your life”.  She “started” with Me Ra and now has a thriving business.    Please join us tomorrow night on the Soarority Forum from 5-7pm, PST for more with Tacey Gosling.  For now, I hope you enjoy this interview…

Q:  When did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people?
Hmmm…That’s kind of a funny question because photography was never really a ‘hobby’ of mine.  Sure, looking back, I’ve always loved photos…but more their meaning, than actually ‘taking’ them…As strange as it sounds, before I even owned an SLR camera, I had a life-changing ‘aha’ moment and in a single moment,  decided to pursue photography as a career….Indeed, that is a long and fabulous story, but for time’s sake, it’s enough to say I, for several reasons (mostly health related) decided  to leave my dream job’ (one that I studied 7 years to achieve) to pursue photography.  That was in April of 2009.

I received my first SLR in the mail (from Ebay!) in May 2009….by June (after attending a Confidence Workshopwith MeRa, Brian and some incredible ladies), I launched my original blog , and then, in August of 2009, scared, but extremely excited, I had my first family photo session.  From there, for the entire month of August  I offered to photograph all the families from my son’s daycare, in order to gain some experience, and build my portfolio.  By the end of 2009, less than 8 months of owning my camera, I had photographed one ‘vow renewal’ and at least 10 family portrait sessions.  In 2010, I began charging for my work.

Q:  What inspires your photography?  What made you fall in love with photography?
Before I knew I wanted to pursue this insanely beautiful, creative, competitive industry, I loved photographing life….as it unfolded. Looking back,  I photographed all the moments that I would have regretted not capturing….which for me were the little, often tender, everyday moments that make your heart just swell (I am super-duper emotional).  Having those photos that will bring you back to that exact place in time when you felt so strongly, where your heart felt soo happy means a lot to me.  I am incredibly moved by photos…Especially photos of my children….One particular photo that sticks out in my mind (perhaps one of my favourite captures of all time) is my little girl, butt naked (about 5 I would say) twirling around (dancing, I think) in her little plastic swimming pool…with not a care in the world.  Her wet hair left a trail of droplets as she twirled, totally unaware of anything around her. *Sigh* Many people comment on my ability to capture ‘moments’, and I think the desire to capture similar moments for other parents is what inspires my work the most.

Q:  What inspires you as a person, artist?
Nature….Rain. The sky.  Tall grass, pretty fields, vast landscapes…the beach.  I’m in awe of a child’s  innocence…..A new Mother’s transformation into Motherhood…All of life’s ‘firsts’….I am inspired by this amazing journey called life….I drool over low, glorious back light….I am enamoured by the whimsy and dreamy quality of Barb Uil’s (Jinky’s) work. *I will be meeting her in two days and I cannot wait!*  I  love, love, love the photography in Anthropologie campaigns (and secretly aspire to photograph for Anthro one day…)  The incredibly talented Jose Villa inspires me…I love his colour palette.  I love his use of light.  I am soooo blown away by the incredibly giving, talented and completely infectious, Jasmine Star….…Lastly, I would say Love inspires me….Real, authentic, in-the-moment-when-you-think-no-one-is-watching love…Those are the bits that inspire me as a person and an artist.

Q:  What is one or two pieces marketing/self-promotion ideas that you can give our newbies?
Ooooh, pretty much the best marketing idea I have involves networking…but I will share more of that in our Ask and Learn session….stay tuned tomorrow night for that discussion!

Q:  If you are not behind the camera photographing fantastic people, what might we find you doing?
Hot yoga.  Chasing (and taming) my incredible 4 year old boy.  Driving my 13 year old daughter to the mall (and managing her catapult into adolescence)…Hiking my favorite mountain. Running my favorite mountain trail.  Mountain biking.  (Editing. Editing. Editing.)  Learning…I’m always learning…I love to learn.  I love wine and cheese and being with people who make my heart smile.  Boating with my family.  Savouring life.  Savouring life…yes, that about sums it up.

Q;  What is one of the best things you have done for the success of your business?
Again, this is such a juicy question that I would love to save it for our upcoming forum discussion tomorrow night…I would love to discuss this more with you all…I think sharing our success strategies is so empowering…so ladies, bring yours to our discussion, and I will happily share what has worked for me thus far.

Q:  What are the classes/workshops/DVDs/books or websites that you’ve watched or read to teach yourself photography? Were they helpful?
The first DVD I was ever given, (before I think the UPS man delivered my camera!) was MeRa’s  Refuse to Say Cheese and Behind the Green Box.  These two DVD’S were ‘literally’ my first introduction to photography…Before that, I was good with my point and shoot and hadn’t a clue what aperture meant.

Since then, I’ve spent a great deal of time with Creative Live and have invested in several class downloads, including Zach Arias, Bambi Cantrell, and Jasmine Star.  There are oodles and oodles of resources I have utilized to learn all that I have thus far, feel free to ask me more in my upcoming Ask and Learn session and I will happily share the various places I have learned from.

Q:  Can you tell us a fun back story behind this GREAT  photo!

Being incredibly influenced and quite frankly amazed by Barb Uil, I specifically intended to infuse a little Jinky into a recent family portrait session by stylizing it and planning the session with a clear creative vision.  You can ask me more about how I came to this specific vision, but suffice to say that I knew that in order to capture this boy’s true ‘essence’,  I had to capture him when he was completely engaged in something that allowed would allow me to capture a fabulous image of him in this stage in his life.  I brought a blue swatch of fabric that I normally wrap newborns with and when the time was right, I gave tied that swatch around his neck and watched him come alive…..  It was incredible!  And that is how I created this photo.

Q:  What type of camera equipment did you have when you first started shooting portraits? And what have you added to your camera bag since then?
I started with a Canon 30D and a nifty fifty (1.8).  From there, I purchased a 24-70L, an 85 1.8, a 70-200.  I upgraded my body to a 7D, but quickly decided I wanted the full frame 5D Mark  II (so I sold my 7D).  Most recently I’ve decided I love shooting with prime lenses and recently sold my 24-70 and then invested in the 50 1.2L (a yummy, yummy lens!).

Q:   How do you know about Me Ra and the SOAR! community?
I have always followed MeRa’s blog and learned of the SOAR community when the first scholarship became available; I was soooooo excited to apply…but, was sad to learn I was ineligible because I lived in Canada.   MeRa has always been an incredible motivation and source of inspiration….I was completely shocked and thrilled when Wendy approached me for this segment….I still can’t really believe I’m on MeRa’s blog!

…A BIG thank you to Tacey for sharing parts of her amazing journey and beautiful photos!  She is so excited to go into more depth with all of you tomorrow night on the Ask and Learn, so get registered for the forum and join us at 5pm PST, tomorrow evening!

Have a Super Day!
Wendy (Your SOAR Coordinator)!

Have you ever booked a family photo shoot and then hung up the phone with a knot in your stomach because although the photographer might be a pro, you are NOT a pro at having your picture taken?  Switch the tables.  Have you ever booked a photo shoot and hung up with a knot in YOUR stomach because you want a game plan for your shoot?  If you answered yes to either side of the scenario, today’s post is for YOU!

Many of the people who book my Mini Sessions or Portrait Shoots are photographers themselves.  They have tons of photos they’ve taken of their kids and spouse, but they want to be in the photo too!  Below are six fun tips for the family being photographed AND the photographer shooting!  All of these were inspired from my recent Seattle Mini Sessions.  You’ll notice the same setting in a few to get your creative juices flowing on how I mixed up the family’s set up depending on kids, their age, how many, etc.

Enjoy!

Tip 1:  Wear Complimentary COLORS.

If your family is going to be photographed, go for color!  Look for colors that can compliment each other well.  If there is a mother and daughter, find a way for them to both wear the same color but in different ways.  Notice how mom has the lilac cardigan and her daughter has almost the same color scarf.  This strengthens the presence of the ladies in the family.  Don’t be afraid of patterns, as long as there isn’t a distracting logo, your good!  Golden Rule that I always have Genie tell our clients “Where what you feel most BEAUTIFUL in.”

Tip 2: Scout Out a Fun, Creative Location

Before the shoot, scout out an interesting location.  Look for fun textures, old barns, wheat fields, abandoned buildings, brick, ivy, cement steps, etc.  It’s always fun to mix up your family photo shoot with unique backgrounds and locations!

Tip 3: Share the Spotlight!

Take turns focusing everyone’s attention on each person in the family.  The simple act of everyone turning and giving the youngest daughter a BIG smile brings out the best reactions!

And when the middle one, who is a little more shy, is authentic to herself when it’s her turn…what more could you ask for!  This is the story of their family.

Tip 4:  Toddler Calls the Shots (in the beginning)

There is nothing I love more when I start a family photo shoot, and the toddler wants to sit by himself off to the side!  It’s the BEST!!!  I encourage the mom and dad to let me take a handful of shots because this way the toddler feels like I’m on his side, but it’s also the sweetest season to photograph.  We take a few with the toddler calling the shots on where he is going to sit and not sit, and then he’s usually up for  my ideas after that. (But I have to admit, I think his ideas win every time! :) )

Funny  little story with this next photo….Isn’t it sweet!  Doesn’t that little guy look like the perfect subject for photos?!

In truth, we did the toddler’s idea and now it was Ms. Me Ra’s turn.  :)   I asked the mom to gently rest her head on her husband’s shoulder for a peaceful look, and she looked at me like “What?!” with a big smile!  But she tried it, and we got to laughing so hard we almost wet our pants!  She was trying to rest her head on hubby’s shoulder, but the toddler wanted down which caused her husband to have to readjust constantly which sometimes bumped her head, and then I kept asking her to try “resting” her head again as the toddler tried to climb out of dad’s arms while the baby is starting to fidget in mom’s arms–OH, if you could only see the outtakes! BUT, you only need the stars to align for a split second to get the shot where everyone looks peaceful, joyful and content!  Love it!  One of my favorite memories from the day!  (love you Linnea!)

Tip 5: Give ‘Em a SQUEEZE!

Touch, hugs, the “BIG SQUEEZES”, the BIG–Wrap-My-Arms-Around-Mom and Dad, is a great activity for a family photo shoot!  Pre-tweens that may be a little unsure of the shoot, don’t hold an ounce back if they are asked to SQUEEZE dad with all they’ve got!  Don’t worry about focus being sharp.  The story of this photo is all about content.  I LOVE that this little guy is looking right at the camera, but he isn’t sharp.  It gives me a sense of feeling how wrapped up and safe he is in dad’s arms.

Have mom squat down to her child’s height and go for the same BIG SQUEEZE!  Get in tight for a more intimate feeling.  Frame out whatever isn’t necessary.  We don’t need all of mom’s arm to know she’s holding her little one.  We don’t need much background or anything to the sides of them.  We want the whole story to revolve around this SQUEEZE!

Tip 6: Finish Where Love Began!

End your photo shoot with mom and dad, where all the love in the family first began!  Off center mom and dad and let the kids be in the background.  This is when I have mom and dad do a big “FAKE LAUGH” for me (that feels absolutely awkward! but the more they do it, the funnier and authentic it becomes!).  Let the kids just stand in the background.  Their confused or bored little faces adds the perfect contrast to make mom and dad’s connection of laughter that much stronger in the story of your photo!  And I guarantee that mom and dad will have a BLAST doing this set up which is a GREAT way to end the photo shoot!

Now your turn!  What are you favorite family photo tips?!

Big thanks to the most wonderful subjects!  Thank you for the honor of capturing your families!

Happy Monday!

Me Ra

Top three take aways from EVO:

1. I REALLY need to step into the current century and swap  my Blackberry for an iPhone!

2. Twitter is more powerful than I realize!

3. Oprah doesn’t have it all figured out, and that’s why we LOVE her so much!

I’m a newbie to Social Media conferences, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when Brian and I arrived at EVO.  Can I just say my expectations were blown out of the water!!  First of all, Utah…PARK CITY…is CRAZY BEAUTIFUL-TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY-PINCH YOURSELF EVERY MORNING YOU OPEN YOUR CURTAINS kind of scenery!  Just look at this cloud photo Brian took on his iPhone!

With a gorgeous background, this was the most fun three day conference (and not just for me and Brian but our WHOLE family)!  The kids went to the coolest adventure day camp, riding gondolas up to awesome hiking trails (Pascaline saw her first MOOSE!), swimming in the afternoon, bowling, and more!

The keynotes were fascinating, especially hearing the candid creative process that Oprah and the Harpo team are in the midst as they reinvent themselves with OWN.   The workshops had such great hands-on takeaway too!  Brian and I had a blast doing an intensive photography workshop with the fabulous WhiteOnRice duo.

And all the EVO sponsors were incredibly approachable from the Sesame Street marketing team to the Southwest Airlines group to crying over babies stories in the Huggies suite.

But what strikes me most about this conference is what was missing from EVO.   Ego.  Ego was totally missing from this conference!  No rock star attitudes whether you were the VP Creative Director at Harpo or a down-to-earth @Bloggess who keeps it real while blowing her audience away, despite her fears of presenting.   Instead of ego, there was intense PASSION for making the world a better place, whether your tool is Social Media or a nerf gun with intention of empowering other parents to engage in SERIOUS PLAY with their kids (thank you Meredith!).  There was room for every kind of passion, and I especially love the ones that have a mind to spread sparkles everywhere!

Everyone I met at EVO was so incredibly approachable, friendly, wanting to learn from each other–I wish I had more time with every new friend I made.

(me with Meredith from Hoo-dee-Hoo!)

And I know I made new life long friends that will help me grow and laugh along the way.

(me and Rachael Herrscher of Today’s Mama / Co-Founder of EVO)

Whether you are a newbie to blogging, Twitter, and every other vice of Social Media, or maybe you are an old pro at it all, or maybe you want an excuse to come to one of the most beautiful places in the world and make new friends while your kids have a blast at the coolest day camp (and you scream your pants off on the Alpine Coaster)–whatever reason you can justify to come to EVO next year–YOU HAVE TOO!  The word is that EVO’s Early Bird Registration started (and last year they sold out lighting fast!).

And Jeramy, dudes are invited too!!  The tagline of the conference is “the evolution of women in social media” but it was awesome to see a handful of men attend who are interested in seeing how women are shaking up the sm world!

Big shout out to my amazing publisher, Amphoto Books/Random House!  They gave a copy of “Your Baby in Pictures” to the first TWO HUNDRED people to grab their seat for my closing Keynote!  I LOVE this photo!  It’s the perfect combination; women laughing while eating chocolate and holding my book!

But seriously, I can’t thank YOU enough for all your well wishes, thoughts and prayers toward my Closing Keynote.  I practiced that talk for weeks, and I can’t imagine it going any better.  My stomach was a flurry of butterflies in the hours leading up to my talk, but when it came time to get on stage I thought of Oprah’s words “Fill Your Space”, and I went for it.

The response that has followed on Twitter has left me speechless.  So many hearts resonated with what I shared, and I love that we got to go on a journey from a psych ward to the jungles of Thailand to the Nate Berkus Show set–and we even whooped like Gibbon Apes with Pascaline’s help!  (big thanks to Trevor Christensen for these photos!  I love my baby girl’s smile as she stands on stage with me!)

When we left Utah Tuesday night, I tweeted “My heart is full.”  EVO truly filled my heart on so many unexpected levels. Fingers crossed we’ll see eachother next year!

Thank you to the amazing #evoconf team for ALL their hard work, thinking of the smallest details, and making us feel so welcome.  It was a honor to be with all of you!

I took a TON of photos at the party after my keynote, if we got a photo together will you tag me on Facebook on this page?  I’d love to see them and stay in touch!

Now, for those of you who are veterans at attending social media conferences, what are your favorite reasons for going?

Today is our 14 year anniversary, and I am more in love with Brian than ever!

When we first got engaged, a woman at our church asked me if I knew what the meaning of marriage was.  I was bright eyed and clueless to the passionate answer she gave.  She said “Marriage is about fighting for eachother’s freedom–fighting for the person you know they have potential to become–seeing that person living a life where they believe they are worthy of love and all the dreams they carry inside. If no one else will fight, including the person we marry, you commit to fighting for their freedom–even when the fighting is tough love.”  She encouraged Brian and I to consider this with every choice we made about our future jobs, family culture, lifestyle, etc.  Did our choices help the other person get one step closer to living their fullest potential?

After fourteen years, I can say Brian and I have built our marriage on the words of that wise woman.  And it has made all the difference in the world.  Today, we not only celebrate fourteen passionate years of marriage, but how much closer we’ve both come to seeing the other person set free to pursue their impossible dreams.  Justin Hackworth caught this photo of Brian as I was presenting the closing keynote at EVO this week.  It makes me want to cry because Brian’s face expresses all the celebration of how hard he’s fought for me to come this far in my own freedom. So much to celebrate.

I love you babe…with all that I am.

Any creative ideas on how to celebrate a wedding anniversary?  (I love asking you questions like this because you ALWAYS give the most interesting suggestions!)

Meet Julie Watts-An Incredible Photographer and Amazing Mom!

Julie has so much to share.  She started her photography business over 10 years ago and just recently started another business, Photopantz.  Amazing!

Q:  What inspires your photography?
The fabulous juxtaposition of curiosity and control. There’s a saying “The difference between a pro and an amateur is that a pro knows what the image is going to look like before they click the shutter.” I agree, but I’m so curious and ready to be thrown into chaos…action & vibrance are as a necessity, born in unpredictable moments. The photos of my own wedding are excellently exposed, but flatly lit, and have no action. There was no emotional connection between the photographer and anyone. That was 1998 and I had no idea it meant so much to me until it was too late. I remember thinking, “Man, if I was a wedding photographer, I know EXACTLY how I would act. I would pay emotional attention to the bride, her mom, her best friends… I would b.s. with the whole wedding party, learn names, really immerse myself in their family, you know? So that’s what I did. And I realized that clients had such a need for reassurance…reassurance that they were really being heard. That, coupled with my surrender of complete control, is what makes photography totally fascinating to me. Sometimes I say to a high school senior “Hey, this moment is awkward…but this is EXACTLY the tension that’s gonna take us to Awesome ImageLand.” I am able to build trust extremely quickly this way. Seriously, my favorite shoots are with seniors who don’t even want to be there!

I played alone a lot as a kid, on two acres…that must be part of why I’m predisposed to doing “my own thing.” I’m so comfortable being alone, I think it actually developed a heightened interest and curiosity about other people.

I have a deep empathy for how other people experience their journey of life. I know my subjects feel it when they are in front of my camera. If they are ANYTHING like me, they are hard enough on themselves…and since I’m the wielder of the “discomfort” device, the camera, I feel I have a great responsibility to counterbalance their discomfort.

I just realized that part of my flow is to almost “ignore” the camera when I am interacting with a client. With body language, you can make a big deal out of adjusting settings, or you can be subtle about it (depending on your client, either behavior could set them at ease, or increase paranoia! ? ). It is a huge leap when you recognize and accept the leadership role you have placed yourself in, by choosing to become a photographer. Your vibe & your thoughts guide the entire experience and can leave them feeling inspired about the possibilities in life! As you can probably tell, I’m completely inspired by the psychological side of photography…I seem to have always gravitated towards photographing people in times of transition: weddings, high school seniors, and new parents and babies. These are all times when I believe the best gift I can give my client is an inspiring image to absorb into their consciousness about who they are and who they are destined to become. Maybe some expectant moms or brides-to-be already exude confidence and a knowingness of who they are, and that’s awesome when I can tap into their energy immediately and collaborate at a deep level. But I honestly get the most pleasure out of subtly shepherding a client who may feel unsure about their impending transition in life, through laughter and remaining emotionally accessible to them. Through the act of participating in a session, they are demonstrating how they make decisions about “the unknown” (the image I’m making) based on the amount of trust they have in my direction, and how in touch they are with their gut instinct. It’s totally fascinating to me…lately I’ve been inspired by Jennifer B. Hudson and her work with women. That chick is INSANELY awesome!

Q.   Two best marketing/promotion ideas for newbies?
Doing the studying/work you feel you need to do in order to feel confident about what you can offer clients. With confidence, it is nearly effortless to spread the word about what you do. Doesn’t that feel good to imagine? Read books, practice, learn, get coaching, get therapy, pray, throw knives, imagine life as a video game, do whatever you have to do to feel comfortable talking about what you have the ability to create. It is very important to remember, most people LOVE meeting a photographer! By introducing yourself or sharing what potential lies in knowing you, you are giving someone a “cool” story to tell their friends. So don’t be bashful, but of course don’t go on and on about it, either. Leave them wanting to know more. Every person I come into contact with routinely, knows I’m a photographer… my bank tellers/managers, my gas station attendant, my hairstylist, my insurance guy, my kids’ teachers, my chiropractor, my dentist, etc. Do all of these people in your life know what your photographic specialty is? Have they seen your work? Do they have your cards? ? Plant the seed of good intention as a habit and let go of any expectations.

One of the best things about aspiring in business, is all of the self-development that occurs because of it. I’m so excited to guest blog and speak about what I’ve learned in the past decade! Developing my listening skills was HUGE… Knowing how to not “shrink inward” or “puff up”, but to feel grounded and “right sized” in social/networking situations was such a relief…Learning how to think about “worry” in a new perspective. Man, I indulged in worry “talk” because I thought that’s what everybody did. It came so naturally to talk about worrying. Well that’s not what “successful” people do. I think healthy thinkers realize they can use worry as a tool, in limited amounts. But for too many, worry fights against us, and it is destructive to our inspiration. I’m fascinated by how strongly and tightly worry can grip and hold us. With a perspective shift, I’ve felt worry slide right off me and feel a world away.

#2…I give each client 10 business cards with my favorite image on it from their session. I haven’t tracked data, but I think this highly increases the rate of exposure. Print off a sheet yourself from your photo printer using the best paper you can get your hands on, or order a sheet of cards along with your clients’ lab orders, if your lab can accommodate that. It’s little reminders…giving them a reason to mention you…that can make a big difference.

Q.  What inspires me as a person?
I want to prove to myself that I’m scared of all the wrong things! I want to see how closely I can come to realizing my full potential before this life is all over. We have the easiest life of any other men and women who have ever lived. I mean, if Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart (did you know she worked as a photographer to earn money for flying lessons?!), & Madame Curie can accomplish what they did back then, just THINK of they would do NOW! I don’t say that to put pressure on anyone…in fact, I believe you are exactly where you are meant to be. But don’t marinate there because of fear. With a fire in your heart and a pioneering spirit, I believe all of us can develop an ability to sense clues as to what our unique and specific contributions are. Because of all of the self-development intertwined with the business of photography, it’s a wonderful way to discovering your purpose, even if specifically being a professional photographer isn’t the biggest contribution you will make to the world…(Madame Curie, a mom down in her laboratory, discovered and coined the term “radioactivity”!)

Q. What are you doing when you are behind the camera ”shooting”?
When I’m not shooting, I might be throwing knives at the backyard target, talking philosophy in the garage with my husband, playing a mean tambourine in the music room…but the project that has taken over COMPLETELY in the past year has been….it’s still hard to believe… starting the first APPAREL company that makes shooting slacks especially for women photographers, Photopantz, LLC! It all began in my closet. I was so frustrated not having any nice black pants that did everything I wanted (look sleek, cover my bum when I bend, stretch and have discrete pockets for batteries, lens caps, biz cards, and smart phone, lip gloss). Me Ra’s encouragement and belief in me and my idea catapulted me into action. Next thing I knew, I was at a photography convention debuting the prototype pair. Then I was importing hundreds of yards of fabric, meeting with technical designers…it’s just the wildest thing EVER! I am SO excited to equip women photographers with the perfect pair of pantz that provides places for all of the necessary things for rocking their weddings! Just wait til you see the hidden “ninja” pockets in the cuffs for quick stash of spent batteries….or lip gloss!

Q:  Where else might we find you when not editing or at a session?
ON the radio!! I began cohosting “Motivational Happy Hour” an AM radio show on the Chat With Women Network in the Seattle-Tacoma area this month with my cohost, Jennifer Westby. Talk about an amazing Mom!! She founded a non-for-profit that promotes random acts of kindness in the memory of her mom (http://www.momssixdays.com/) ! We are total newbies and there’s a lot to learn, but I TOTALLY dig radio! And guess what? Not only is it a fun way to talk about the reality of building businesses and following passions, the show streams online so you can listen live or to all of our archived shows.

Q.  What is the best thing you have done for your business?
The best thing, hands down, that I have done for my business, is to pursue business coaching. I discovered Karen Buckley right here on Me Ra’s blog in 2007. I can’t even tell you how much I’ve came into my own since I dared to email her, and dared to believe I was worth the investment. I can say without hesitation, that it changed my life completely. Karen was even a guest on our radio show. Since then, I have found several teachers and mentors that have helped me through so many different stages of my businesses, and I am so blessed to be able to get support from them when their specific brand of inspiration is necessary to get me through a rough patch.

Q.   What are the classes/DVDs/Workshops that you used to teach yourself photography?
I took B&W film photography in high school, and I have a B.A. in Psychology. But Me Ra’s Workshop in 2007 helped tremendously to shape me, as did Liana Lehman’s Business Bootcamp for Photographers (http://www.liana.tv/). Ken Whitmire’s Wall Portrait Conference (www.wallportrait.com) is a MUST as well! In the very beginning in 2000 I went to the library and checked out the big huge books with portraits in them. I didn’t read instructional photography books much…I was too intimidated by the technical stuff at that time…but I studied the old master’s portraits and took note of what aspects I loved and absorbed the composition, lighting, and my favorite part, guessing what the psychological situation was that brought about this single impactful moment. I also got a subscription to Professional Photographer Magazine and poured over it every month for years. It taught me to know what is important to “the pros” and what characteristics make up the successful photographers featured there.

Q.  What equipment did you use when you started?
When I started in 2000, I shot with a Olympus z4040. It was a 4 megapixel and it cost $1000. It was NOT a DSLR, either!! No interchangeable lenses! So in those first few weddings I shot, I had to anticipate “the moment” and hit the button before “it” happened! Looking back, it sharpened my sense of anticipation. Couple that with my empathy for my subjects and that resulted in the specific style of my candid photos that eventually developed. Don’t ever use mediocre equipment for an excuse unless you’ve used and understand everything on it and pushed it to every limit. Figuring out a way to make it work is an ATTITUDE! Right now I shoot with two Nikon D700’s. I’m a huge fan of using reflectors to help with light, too.

Q.  What’s the story behind this image?

I really believe that good can come out of bad in every situation. I try to live that. During a wedding I was shooting last September, the officiant didn’t show and no one could get a hold of him. Long story short (you can read it on my blog), after 45 minutes of the entire crowd waiting, I told the groom that I had been ordained online and that I could perform the ceremony. And five minutes later, the best man swapped his ‘lil Nikon for my $10k in gear. He shot the ceremony. Another groomsman tossed me an iphone with vows he found quickly on the internet. I was addressing the guests, and I performed the ceremony. It was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life and I’ll never forget it. For those 45 minutes we waited for the officiant, I told myself “no, don’t suggest that, you’re crazy, that’ll cause more problems, who do you think you are.” But something happened. I knew that all that talk was b.s. And in that next moment, I chose to listen to my gut. And I’ve been listening intently ever since.

Q.  How do you know Me Ra and Soarority?
My mom showed me an article in the newspaper about Me Ra Koh in 2007. I was impressed by how quickly Me Ra became successful, especially with such a gentle energy. I am privileged to now assist Confidence Workshop Attendees when the workshops are here in the Seattle-Tacoma area. The inspiring attendees are all, in one way or another, in a time of transition with their photography. I love to float around and talk one-on-one with the attendees about whatever the major issue is they are working on with their photography. On the Soarority forum, I think I’ve found my niche as an image critiquer! Some women are so intuitive with their image making—they don’t know WHAT they did, but they know it’s SOMETHING impactful…giving my unique style of input as to the strengths and weaknesses I see in an emerging photographer’s image is a great way to give back.

WOW Julie!  You are so incredibly inspiring!  I can’t wait until Thursday night for your Ask and Learn.  Join us from 5-7pm PST in the SOARORITY forum, for all the goodness!   Thank you so much for sharing with us!
