Picture me standing on top of my dining table–this morning–screaming “WOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!!”  Now picture me doing a little tap dance on top of the dining table, and now I’m throwing blueberries to the kids, as I go crazy giddy over our latest project and partnership to launch!!

Last October, the Nielsen Photo Group approached me and Brian about becoming partners and collaborating together on some pretty awesome projects.  Who is the Nielsen Photo Group?  Well, first they are a part of the Nielsen company that does all the TV ratings…yep, they are a BIG company.  The Nielsen Photo Group division does PDN (the Photo District News magazine and website), Photo Plus Expo (the HUGE tradeshow in NY ever year), WPPI (the biggest Wedding and Portrait Photographers International expo in Vegas every year), and Rangefinder magazine.  It’s safe to say that they are one of the most successful and influential brands in the world of photography.  When the VP approached me, who is this warm, beautiful, business savvy woman, and asks if we’d be interested in talking about partnering…I’m listening.  All that to say, they have been a total JOY to work with for the last ten months!  This partnership has been more wonderful than I could have first imagined!  And today, TODAY, we launch our first project together the New Beginnings Photo Contest!!!

One of the most popular requests from all of you is MORE Photo Contests.  It’s been a while since we’ve hosted one on the blog.  Now you know why!  LOL!!  We’ve been working away on a photo contest that is larger than anything else we’ve ever done.  And we won’t be limited to highlighting the top five photos, we will get to feature new submissions every week!  I’ll be picking faves and giving them critiques!  And there is even a Kids Click category that I’m crazy about!  How many of you would agree that our kids, with no training, take the most amazing photos!  The winner of that category gets a $250 GC to Toys R Us–if you want mom, we will keep it a secret so you can use it for his Christmas presents! :)   We are also tying up the judges!  Wait till you see who these awesome people are!!

Go check it out!!!  The first 25 people to enter get fun door prizes!!!

And meet me tonight at 6pm PST for the Twitter Party! We are talking about photography, confidence, creativity, balance as a mom, and more!  Bring your questions, I’m so excited to party with all of you and have a candid conversation about our passions!

Welcome Back to Part 2 of the New York Confidence Workshop held in Jersey City, NJ.

The ladies did such an amazing job again during our Family Model Shoot.  I didn’t let them hang out in open shade for the whole shoot.  They got in bright sun and experimented with metering, shooting in Manual, and dealing with those “dreaded” harsh shadows.

Jessica Sudusky captured amazing shots of these two boys.  When we discuss composition in a workshop, we talk about the “Rule of Thirds”, and when using it, it can enhance and completely change the story being told in an image.  Sometimes you just have to break the “rules” and I am so glad that Jessica broke this “rule” because I think the little boy looks perfect right in the middle of the image.

These kiddos had the bluest eyes I have ever seen.  Nikki Buchalski knew that if you asked them to look up at her toward the sky (just a little bit), they would just come across that much bluer in the image.  Totally awesome Nikki!

There is nothing more sweet than catching a dad and his son laughing together.  Even with Dad a tad-bit out of focus because she was focused on the little boy;  the emotion in this picture totally says it all.  Very nice Laura Hanis!

Bo Daley, I love, love,  love this image.  The motion of her body and hair, her smile…just perfect!

Meg Hansen, I love how you caught this little guy in action.   This is one of those shots where the parents always say, “I can’t believe you caught him doing what he does constantly right now!”

I love to have one of the siblings step forward and do something they love while doing family portraits.  This little girl choose…SPINNING!  Here is my view of her spinning with the family totally loving it in the background.  A little while later Kristen Fair caught the second image while the girl was still spinning:)

Even though we were not shooting strictly babies on the second day, I love that Courtney Henry didn’t forget to capture some details of where the children are at this age.  So fun, and the railing lines really add to the composition of this image.  Nice eye Courtney!

Kristen also caught this really tender moment between mom and daughter.

Christi, mom is looking so beautiful in this image.  I am sure she loves it…And I am totally LOL at the second image here!  Darling.

What a fantastic shot Sarah Cruz took of these two siblings, which we all know, trying to get siblings together in a photo is quite a challenge.  You did it Sarah!

Those “in-between” moments are those magical times when you can catch images that are pure joy.  These are so wonderful Jeanine Capan!

We had a little portrait exercise as well this weekend.  Here are some of the great head shots the ladies took of each other.  I wish so badly, that I had one of each attendee, but these are the ones that people submitted to the online gallery afterwards.

At the end of Day 2 we spend some time talking about post-processing, mainly Lightroom.  As you remember from Part 1, the Behind the Scenes photos showed that I only had a little window light to work with here for the baby images, but after 2 or 3 adjustments in Lightroom, the photo becomes so much more intense.  I love that about Lightroom!  It is so simplistic when you need it to be.

I absolutely have a full heart when I look through the pictures after a workshop, and I see all of you making new friendships, taking pictures of each other and just enjoying the moments.

XOXO Ladies!

Brian and I always love going to New York and this time was no different.   We met the most fabulous ladies at our New York/New Jersey Confidence Workshop.  Thank you so much for the best memories!

As you know, day one of our workshop, we dive right into the basics of digital photography.  We talk about composition, lenses, ISO and so much more.  We also get our attendees immediate practice on everything they are learning by scheduling babies to come in as our models.  We split the women into groups and ask them to “think outside of the box”.  We want to push them to be creative in their composition, trying views and angles that they haven’t tried before.  As you can see in this “behind the scenes” image, we had some challenging spaces to work with our babies in.  One was on a stairwell and the other a very dark room with little light.

Hopefully by giving them tough spaces to work in while they are “practicing”, it will empower them to take amazing photos regardless of where they are when they leave the workshop.  I do have to say, “The ladies totally ROCKED these images”!

I love the quietness and comfort that these images from Jessica Sudusky convey.  Lovely!

Gosh, hand and the baby’s head shots get me all the time!  I just plain love this shot!  Way to go Laura Hanis (Our Running on Empty Winner)!

And this snuggly moment is so precious Laura!

Nikki Buchalski, what a super shot of “Baby S”!  Nikki used a low f-stop to make this cute little face pop right off the image.  The golden light in the background really adds a beautiful color dimension to the image.

In “Your Baby in Pictures” I talk about how great it is to capture the connection between a mom and her baby.  Sarah Cruz, you did a fabulous job at that with your images.

Christi also got this great shot with mom!  We don’t see much of mom, but by looking at the baby’s face, we know that the baby feels protected and loved.

Another version of this image, you can never lose by shooting the baby over mom’s shoulder.  I love to have the mom dress in a simple black cami on top.  The continuity of the skin on her shoulder with her baby’s skin, really softens the image and creates that timeless look.   Courtney Henry captured “Baby C” looking right at her.  You caught that fleeting moment…Very nice!

I keep going back to this image from Meg Hansen.  I think it is the angle and viewpoint that she took this image at, different than a straight on shot.  It totally changes the composition and dimension of this Baby S in this image.  Great work on “thinking outside the box”!  It is so fun to push yourself to shoot your subject at a different angle that you usually would.  Next time when you go out for a session, take your normal shot of your subject, then take 5 more shots, changing your viewpoint, as you walk around your subject.  You will surprise yourself with this challenge, for sure!

Kristen Fair, WOW, did you ever work the window light on her face.  Beautiful, even light!  Because you had her facing the window light, it created those fantastic “catch lights” in her eyes.  And your black and white conversion is so pure and full of joy!

Jeanine Capan got in close to capture the sweetness of “Baby C”.  Don’t you just love the “Drool Bubble”?  So many times new moms do not want to be in any pictures with their babies because they are “not happy” with their body so soon after birth.  We have all been there, right?   Jeanine captured just enough of mom in the background, especially her beautiful smile!

We talk a lot about what we want the photo’s story to be before we even lift our camera up to our eye.  With digital, we can shoot endless photos and not know what we even are taking pictures of.  But if we pause first, find our story, and then compose, every photo we take holds that much more meaning.

The love this mom has for her baby just spills out of this image.  What a wonderful moment of tenderness you captured Bo Daley!

Speaking of “catch lights”.  Bo has her so perfectly placed in front of the window that they bounce right out her eyes back at you.   Beautiful Bo!

I totally had to add this picture that Jessica took of Brian!  I am so blessed to have Brian at my side through all of these workshops!  And look at that creamy, blurred background!  Yay!

Thank you for allowing Brian and I to speak to your hearts this weekend.  I hope you all have a new sense of empowerment to go out and tackle your dreams.  It brought joy to my heart to watch friendships and confidence grow this weekend.

But this isn’t all from the New York Confidence workshop.  Tune in Friday for Part 2 of New York!
XOXO

I’ve been given the honor of being one of the judges for a fun, new photo contest!  You are ALL invited to submit photos of your Rockin’ Baby for a contest celebrating the new award winning, board book called Rockin’ Babies!  Gotta LOVE that cover!

The authors are a dynamic mother/daughter team.  Dr. Jenn Berman is the daughter that you may recognize as the psychological expert on hundreds of television shows including The Oprah Winfrey Show and is a regular on The Today Show, The Early Show, and CNN. She hosts a live daily call-in advice show called “The Love and Sex Show with Dr. Jenn” on Sirius/XM’s Cosmo Radio 5-7 pm PST (heard five hours a day seven days a week). She is also the author of the LA Times best selling books SuperBaby: 12 Ways to Give Your Child a Head Start in the First 3 Years and The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy Confident Kids.

Dr. Jenn’s mom and co-author of Rockin’ Babies is Cynthia Weil who is someone who has written the songs we’ve all grown up on!!  Cynthia is best known as the lyricist of such classic songs as On Broadway, Just Once, Here You Come Again, Somewhere Out There, Don’t Know Much, He’s So Shy, We gotta Get Out Of This Place and You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling, the most played song of the 20th century.  Yes, when you find yourself humming You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling, you now know who the beautiful woman is wrote the song!!!

When two powerful, dynamic women approach me about being a judge for their photo contest, I am nothing but incredibly honored! This little gem of a board book has already one first place for the Purple Dragonfly award!

So I know all of you LOVE a good Photo Contest!  This is the first one of a couple more to come this month!  To enter the Photo Contest, upload a photo of your Rockin’ Baby (between 0 months and 6 years) capturing the fun, edgy spirit of the book. The photos will be judged based on creativity, originality, and the ability to make the judges smile. The judges will select the top 10 Rockin’ Babies photos and then the public will vote to select the winner. Your other two judges are actress Leslie Grossman (Mary Cherry on the television series Popular) and Gregory Keer (syndicated columnist for Parenting magazine, L.A. Parent and on-air expert on fatherhood).

The Rockin’ Babies Photo Contest ends October 1st, 2011.  Be sure to CLICK HERE for all the juicy details!  Prizes?  See Dr. Jenn’s blog for a list of ALL of them!

Meet Sara Montgomery-A Super Photographer and an AMAZING Mom!

Q:   When did you start your business and what was the turning point of taking it from a hobby to a business of charging people?
Just like every other mother, I love taking photos of my children.  When my daughters came into my life, my camera became like another limb on my body.  In an attempt to preserve every simple moment that I cherished so much, I always had my camera with me.  A couple of years after they were born; I began taking photos for my family, and then for my friends, and then for friends of my friends.  I was having a lot of fun, but was scared to take the plunge and call myself a “photographer”.  Thanks to the encouragement from my family and friends, I put a muffle on that negative self talk, and I can now happily say that I am a mother, a wife, a full-time registered nurse, and a photographer

Q:  What inspires your photography?
My photography is inspired by the faces and the emotion that I see through the camera.  When I look through my lens, I can see my subjects for who they really are and for what they really love.  I feel the emotion in their laughs and I start to cry when I see a mother nurse her baby.  It is like my highway into the soul of the person on the other side of the camera.   I can feel the thrill of throwing your head back on a swing or dancing on the beach… The passion in a mother’s arms… the excitement of a lost tooth… I can hear the sigh of a newborn…and the joy in a good laugh.  I am inspired and challenged to freeze those moments in time so that the memory of that day can be brought right to the surface with just a glance at an image.

Q:  What inspires you as a person/artist?
One night our family was sitting around the television… there was a commercial on showing the homeless and hungry children in Africa.  My daughter was 4 at the time, and she asked, “Why is that boy sleeping in the road?”  My husband and I started explaining how some children in the world and even in our community do not have homes, or beds, or even food.  She sat there in shock; it was more than she could comprehend.  We spoke a bit about how lucky we are to have all of the things we have, but the commercial ended, and we all slipped back into our comfortable couch with our snack to continue watching our show.  Two weeks later we were driving in the car and she said, “Mom, I think I want to give that boy from Africa my bed, and I will just sleep with my sister.”   Screech… stop the car! My heart just stopped… what a sweet girl.  I had forgotten all about that poor, shoeless boy resting his head on the curb of that dark street all alone.  And here, she had been thinking about him for weeks.  That was when we started Live With Grace at our home.  It is a program, named for our girls, that we designed to help them learn (and remind us)  how fortunate they are to live their lives, to use the gifts that God has given them, and to teach them about being grateful and giving back.  No matter if they are giving a penny, a toy, a smile or just time, there are ways to give back… my kids remind me of that every day.  They inspire me to use the
gifts that I have been given to make a difference.

Q:  What made you decide to do photography as more than a hobby?  What was the turning point?
I had some serious health issues that came up right when I was toying with the idea of turning this photography thing into more than a hobby.  I came down with a horrible virus that caused my immune system to go completely haywire.  My immune system began a full on war against my own body.  I could not eat, I could not see, my organs were being damaged, my joints were stiffening and contracting, my skin began to scar, and I had a partial (temporary) paralysis. I went to every expert I could, and no one could give me any answers or tell me this would stop or even get better.  Thank God that with powerful prayers and lots and lots of medication, my health stabilized, and I continue to improve every day.  Once I was strong enough to begin living again, I realized I didn’t want to just talk about my dream of pursuing photography.  I was ready to make it a reality.  And, with that, I was up and running as Sara Montgomery Photography!

Q:  What are the classes/workshops /DVDs you have watched to teach yourself?  Were they helpful?
I was fortunate enough to attend one of the first Beginner workshops that Me Ra ever offered.  I had so many  “ah ha” moments it was ridiculous. Nearly a year after that,  I also attended Me Ra’s advanced workshop.  This let me fine tune a lot of the little issues I had been struggling with and I gained a lot of confidence in myself.   One of the best things that I have gotten out of these workshops does not even have to do with the huge amount of knowledge that I gained, but has to do with the people that I met.  I felt like I was welcomed into this amazing community of people who all had a story, who all cared, and who all shared a passion for photography.  I own both of Me Ra’s DVDs, Refuse To Say Cheese And Capture The Story and Beyond The Green Box: Understanding Your Digital Camera.  It is so great to watch a little of the DVD and then pause the video to practice (or answer the phone, or help someone in the bath tub, or make dinner, etc!)  The Portrait 101 kit was a huge help to me as well when I was starting my business, it had a lot of suggestions and resources that helped mold my business into what it is today.  After I was up and running, I realized I needed a professional way to present my images to clients, and I wanted to be able to provide them with a variety of high quality products, so I joined Pictage.  The presentation of my images to my clients is very professional and the products are superb, but my favorite thing about pictage is the Pictage User Groups (PUG). I did not realize when I joined that I would instantly be part of an amazing community of photographers.  The PUG meetings are held monthly…they are
FREE!!! And, with them I have been able to meet amazing friends, attend countless classes,  and have listened to amazing speakers.  Through Pictage,  I have been connected with and learned from people like Me Ra and Brian, Dane Sanders, Jeff and Erin Youngren, and Joe Buissink.

Q:   What are two pieces of marketing/self promotion ideas you can give our newbies?  What is something you did to get your name out there?
One of the best things that I did my first year was to have a Pumpkin Patch Photo Shoot.  I picked a local pumpkin patch… invited all of my friends and family… had them invite all of their friends and family… and we all headed out to the patch.  I did not charge anyone for the photo shoot, I uploaded all of their images to pictage and they were able to purchase them there.  I had no idea what type of turnout there would be, but we ended up having  around 15 families show up during the two hour session. It was a blast! We played in the patch, ate caramel apples… and  we also got some amazing images.  The best part about it is that now it is an annual event!   Now…since most of you are moms…. I know you are connected with an OB/GYN physician out there!  I met with my OBGYN, presented her with a book of my images for her waiting room and offered to have some of my images used in her office.  Most physicians give pregnant mothers a whole packet of goodies when they are around 12 weeks along in their pregnancy…you know the one….don’t eat too much seafood, what to expect while you are expecting, how to combat morning sickness, etc.  I asked if I could include my photography information in those packages.  Now each newly pregnant mother receives information on me and my photography, as well as a print credit for any booked session.

Q:  What was your first paid shoot like?  How did you feel on the way/during/after?
Ugh… Stressful!  My first paid shoot was for a mother and her two children.  I had been referred to her from a friend, and we had never met prior to our session.  On the way there, I was sweating, terrified that I was going to get lost, terrified that they would see through me and know I was not a “real” photographer, worried that I would slip in the grass, rip my pants, or somehow make a complete fool of myself.  The drive was painful, but not as painful as my self talk.  It was very damaging to my confidence!  Why do we do this to ourselves????  Once the session started, my nerves really calmed down and I had a great time.  After the session, I got in my car, took a deep breath, and started to drive home.  My mind was racing…  did I overexpose the images?  Were the images  blurry?  Are they going to like them?  I drove about ½ a mile and pulled my car over and went through all of the images on the back of my camera.  They looked….all right. Whew! The family loved them, so my first paid shoot was a success.

Q:  What is the best part and the toughest part about doing photography with being a wife and a mother at the same time?
The best part about balancing photography with being a nurse, a wife and a mother is that it gives me time to focus on me.  Focus on something that I love that does not have to do with dinner, bed time or homework.  It  is not that I do not love all of those parts of my life, but for so long I had been neglecting myself.  I thought diving into life by focusing on everyone and everything but myself was the right way to be a great mother and wife.  WOW, was I wrong!  I found that working to achieve my personal goals has made me stronger, and it has made my girls and my husband look at me in a new light.  I love that they are proud of me.  Having said that…. Whoa! I am busy!  Working full-time while having a photography business and a family has given me a full plate!  It can be hard to remain balanced.

Q:  What is one last piece of advice you would give to newbies?
Quit procrastinating…have faith in yourself. Get out there and just do it!  Start today, set up a blog.  Blogging is a great way to get your name out there. What do you have to lose?  It is free!  Start writing and write as if you have 10,000 readers a day.  The more you practice, the easier it will become.  Remember there will be rainy days and days when you fail, but keep trying.  Do it for yourself.  Do it so your children will grow up watching you being strong and confident, sometimes they will watch you fall, but then they will watch you pull yourself to your feet with your head high and keep trying!  They will grow up realizing that their dreams are achievable, and they will not let them fade away.

WOW Sara!  Thank you for sharing all of that with us.   What a great interview!  I can’t wait to hear more on tomorrow night’s Ask and Learn Session with you.  Get all of your questions ready for Sara and join me in the forum Thursday, August 18th, from 5-7pm PST.
Have a super day!
Wendy (Your SOAR! Coordinator)

The Confidence Workshop in Phoenix was so amazing in many different ways.  Brian and I got to meet our new SOAR! recipients for the first time, our friend Jeff Jochum was able to spend the weekend with us to see what goes on at the Confidence workshops, and we met another incredible bunch of women pursuing their passion of photography! … And you can’t really beat the weather in Phoenix in February.

The second day of our workshop is when we try to get 2-4 families in to be our models, so you can try out all your new photography skills.  Thank you so much to the wonderful families who braved the warm temperatures that day.  They were awesome and gave our attendees many opportunities to “practice”.

Here Wendy, Our SOAR! Coordinator, captured me showing eveyone how to place a family starting out in a photo shoot, what I might say to them and why concrete really is such a “great” place to shoot people.

After this brief introduction, I let them all go and here is what they captured.  So awesome!

Christine Mosby caught this moment between mom and her son.  I love that mom is looking away with fantastic smile.

Corinne Hamilton, you totally knew how to get this boy to participate!  Super captures!

Even though this little girl is walking away from us, there is something that I really love about it…maybe the reflection and the line on the window drawing us right into her.

Marille Brickey got a great close-up of this sweet thing.

And mom looks so photogenic here.  I am sure she loved this shot Marille.

Darby got a great shot of this little guy, who was very, very shy that day!  Nice work!

Erin Wagnild knows that a family shoot is not all about the whole family looking at the camera.  She got those details to help remember the stage this little boy was in, like his big eyelashes and his chubby fingers and toes.  Fabulous Erin!

Rachel Abelson got this sweet shot only a day into using her new SONY A33.

I love the angle from which Sarah Crank took this shot.

Carol Strawn…The emotion you captured in your images is breathtaking!

One of the best things about a workshop is to see women from all over the world come together for a few days and leave with friendship bonds they will most likely have a lifetime.  It really is more than just photography on workshop weekends.  I think some of these “behind the scenes” images reflect this.

The ladies got an extra “bonus” this workshop as Jeff Jochum joined our ending “Q & A” and talk with us about his passion… business strategy.  Thanks Jeff, for being there and sharing with these women!
