I’ve got a special team of elves for the holidays, and we are gearing up to start a DAILY Facebook Contest through the whole month of December!  Every day at 10am, on my FB Page, a new contest will start! You’ll be asked to either post your answer to the question in a comment, maybe post a photo or even like something! Easy-peazy!  The winner will be announced the NEXT day before the new contest starts!  I LOVE stocking stuffers, and I thought this would be a fun way to give you some–or give you some to give to the photo lover in your life!  Here’s a peek at some of the stocking stuffer prizes coming to you daily!  See you on my FB page tomorrow at 10am!

Yesterday’s Cyber Monday Workshop Sale was a TOTAL BLAST! Thanks to all the women who spread the news, invited a girlfriend and got signed up!  The energy online was FANTASTIC, happy tears from so many and new friendships made every hour!  I had my own happy tears as I saw names sign up who I know have been wanting to come for three plus years!  Happy Holidays ladies, Brian and I are so happy we could add to your blessings this holiday season!

Today, I’m so excited to share a new Photo Recipe with all of you for a Pregnancy Shoot!  This was a special shoot I did in Central Park (NYC) for a former bride. When you are doing a pregnancy shoot, you’ll soon realize that all your balances are off.  Mom is out of balance with her beautiful tummy, so how do you obtain a sense of balance, peace and flattering points of view?  Let’s walk through it together!

PHOTO RECIPE for PREGNANCY SHOOT in CENTRAL PARK (NYC)

WHEN:  If this is your subject’s first pregnancy, you want to wait until they are 8 months pregnant.  Often, a first time pregnancy doesn’t give us that round belly until the last trimester.  We don’t want the mom-to-be looking chubby–she needs to look pregnant!  By the third trimester, her tummy is a perfectly round subject.  Unless…she is having twins!  :)   If she is pregnant with twins, her tummy may be ready for a shoot at six months!  However, if this is mom’s second, third or fourth pregnancy, her tummy will be looking round as early as four months.  This was a frustrating realization when I was pregnant with Blaze.  By the third month, I was already in my maternity clothes!  My body just let go!  :)   Be sure to ask your mom-to-be what pregnancy this is and how far along she is.  Set yourself up for success by how you calendar the shoot.

PREP:  Choose a spot(s) that has soft backgrounds;  wheat field at sunset or different patterns and textures of green shrubbery, or a bright window behind her to blast out.  We found these beautiful Fall leaves and decided to play here for a few!

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.0, 1/100th of a second Shutter Speed and 4oo ISO

I love the colors with her romantic blouse, but I also loved this black and white one when I caught her by surprise.  There is something so pure and stunning to her expression.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.0, 1/100th of a second Shutter Speed and 4oo ISO

I also have mom-to-be bring wraps, any colors she likes.  And if she doesn’t have any, I bring a few to play with.  The image below is one of my favorites.  The sun had already set, and I wanted all the soft colors to tell the story from her soft tummy to the light green wrap to the blurred flowers and bridge lamp in the background.  Notice how she is leaning in to the camera–to give her body more balance in the photo.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/1.7, 1/100th of a second Shutter Speed and 8oo ISO b/c sun had set and was losing light fast.

But push the boundaries, don’t stop with the beautiful smile.  Photo coach her into a quiet space that allows a deeper expression to come forward.  And if you turn it to black and white, the expression will be that much stronger.  I love the sense of peace and utter contentment in this photo.  I also love how STRONG she looks.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.8, 1/60th of a second Shutter Speed and 4oo ISO

FOR P&S USERS (point and shoot users): Turn off your flash and set your camera to Portrait mode.  Experiment with standing on a curb to get a little height on her (slimming for her neckline).  Encourage her to also lean toward the camera so that her energy comes to you, and you avoid double chins.

FOR DSLR USERS:  Turn off your flash.  Go to Manual mode and set your Aperture (the degree of how blurry you can make your background) to the lowest f-stop possible.  We want to make everything around mom-to-be soft and buttery, blurry to highlight the lines of her tummy even more!  If you can’t go down very low in your f-stop, get closer to your subject and have them stand farther away from their background.  This will also blur your background.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.0, 1/800th of a second Shutter Speed and 25o ISO

COMPOSE:  As you can see, I shot a lot of vertical images.  The vertical composition seems to balance and flatter a mom-to-be even more.  But, that doesn’t mean you can’t do horizontal photos.  Just make sure you find the story before you shoot.  When I’m doing pregnancy shoots, I’m keeping my eyes open for circular patterns to accentuate mama’s belly.  I LOVED the architecture on this famous bridge and used the patterns to pull out even more repetition of circular patterns.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.8, 1/100th of a second Shutter Speed and 64o ISO

I also liked the idea of her sitting in front of the circular pattern.  But I waited until everyone, all the onlookers, were out of the frame before I took the shot.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.8, 1/100th of a second Shutter Speed and 40o ISO

When everyone is either willing to wait or gone, then we take the shot.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/1.7, 1/250th of a second Shutter Speed and 40o ISO

CAPTURE:  You can experiment with your focus as you capture a mom-to-be.  If she is looking down at her tummy, focus on her belly button.  If she is looking at you, focus on her eyes.  If she is looking up to the sky with her eyes closed, I would still focus on her eyes.  And if she is looking out to the city, full of expectation of what is to come, I would focus on her face and all the peace it holds.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/2.8, 1/100th of a second Shutter Speed and 40o ISO

And sometimes, it’s even more powerful to not see the face.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/1.7, 1/400th of a second Shutter Speed and 40o ISO

BONUS:  When you think ALL your natural light is gone, and you simply don’t have enough light to work with–consider what story is waiting to be told.  This was our last shot, long after the sun had set.  I didn’t think I had enough available light to pull it off, but I thought about the story being more about the quiet, almost covered, innocent moment then simply getting a photo that has enough brightness.  Sometimes we are so focused on having bright enough photos, we can miss the beauty of photos that hold their story in the fading light.

My DSLR Setting: Aperture was f/1.4, 1/60th of a second Shutter Speed and 80o ISO

With her blue top, argyle socks, and low-low lighting…this is my favorite of the day!

Shachar, you were a gorgeous bride, and you are even more stunning (how is that possible!) as a mom-to-be!  I’m so glad we got to do this photo shoot for you!  Brian and I are soooooo happy for you and J!  Look for all the rest to come today…have fun choosing which ones to frame!  :)

Seriously, I love you girl!  Who else does a tree pose with me while pregnant (AND follows Brian around the park, regardless of how many circles we go in! :) )

I’m so excited to share a few of my favorites from the other Minis I did in Georgetown DC!  But first, great news!  There has been an extension to the New Beginnings Photo ContestThe NEW deadline is December 1st!!  Get those photos submitted by CLICKING HERE!

And, there is a serious “24 hr. special” that is going to happen on Cyber Monday!  That is this Monday, Nov. 28th.  Mark your calendars, details coming tomorrow!

Let’s go to one of the cutest areas ever; Georgetown in Washington DC!  It was a beautiful Fall day, right before sunset.

May I introduce you to two of the cutest Dashchund dogs and their ever-in-love parents!

Another favorite!  I love how the sunset light cast this soft hue on them.

Katie took one of our CONFIDENCE Workshops, and it’s been so fun to watch her own photography take off.  On top of her being super talented, she has a beautiful marriage.  Katie and Brad booked this Mini as an Anniversary gift to themselves!  So sweet, especially how much Brad adores her.  We had to play with the Georgetown cobblestone and railroad tracks!

We liked the lines in this garage door in an alley we found.  I love how Katie pops in that sweet, red dress.  And look at Brad adoring her!

Love playing with that dramatic lighting!  This last one is my favorite, Katie just looks stunning to me–her expression, how she’s leaning in to Brad with the sun flare bubbles.  I love it.  Katie, you are beautiful inside and out!

And then I had three strapping brothers who OFFERED to carry my camera bags!

Lori attended our DC CONFIDENCE Workshop, and what a treat to meet her whole family the Friday before!  Her boys are amazing, and they adore their gorgeous mama!

I loved switching creative energy from a couple to a family within the same hour.  It was so fun and rewarding for me as a photographer.  We got to play together and try all kinds of ideas, like this one!  Don’t those boys look tough!

And we made sure we left a few minutes for just mom and dad.

One more favorite of the boys with their glowing mama!

Thank you so much Katie and Lori for giving me the opportunity of capturing your families!  Your shoots were so different and both so rewarding!!  Both of you are amazing, strong, beautiful women.  It was a complete honor!

Much, much love!

Watching The Nate Berkus Show last week and seeing how photography brought healing to a family with Special Needs, reminded me of how important it is to keep empowering women to build their photography dreams so that this kind of transformation only multiplies. We have reached for this with our SOAR! Scholarship Program the last two years. Our three SOAR! Recipients from this year, Rachel, Charisse and Ali, took their final step and wrote their last SOAR! blog posts last week. Completely inspiring. I even resisted reading them all week, not wanting the year to end. I’m going to miss their blogs and visual journey of how this year is transforming their lives. As I know, many of you will too.

Click on their names to read their final SOAR! blog posts and see the visual transformation that happened in their photography over this last year. And if you have time, leave them a final comment as they set out to SOAR.

Rachel
Charisse
Ali

Stay tuned for their official SOAR! launch when their websites are ready!  And if you need some Thanksgiving themed photo inspiration, they are doing Wordless Posts this week.

THE NEXT STEP for SOAR!

Many of you have asked about SOAR! for next year. Is there going to be another SOAR! Scholarship year? When will it start?

After much thought including lots of morning walks of being quiet and listening deeply, assessing the scholarship program of SOAR! on a whole, lots of prayers and seeking advice, Brian and I have decided that SOAR’s next step is going to be rest. We are going to take a year off of the SOAR Scholarship. This last year was a strong, solid year. And even though we have a great program in place, I never want to do something just because that’s what we do. I want to always be listening and asking if this is what we are meant to do, right now, at this time.

I have a deep sense of this scholarship needing a year off to regroup, to rethink, to strengthen, reshape, rebuild, but also to listen and rest.

The SOAR! website and SOAR! blog will stay up so you can continue to read through the archives of the last two years. There are so many potent Business Coaching exercises, Photography Exercises and examples from our six SOAR! Recipients over the last year to help you feel not so alone in your dream building. We will also leave the SOAR! Forum up, so you can continue to converse with each other and draw from all the resources shared in our Ask & Learn nights. And the fabulous SOARORITY Facebook page is always there for you too!

Some might say it’s unwise to take a year off because you can lose momentum. But I trust this journey. I’ve been on this creative journey for some years now, and whenever I follow my instinct I find myself exactly where I need to be. If SOAR! is meant to have more rest than just a year, we will all know. For now, I’m going to trust this next step in front of me because even though it isn’t clear a mile down the road–this next step is clear.

And I know this will be true for all of you who wanted to apply this year. I think that timing is key to all things. Even though this door is not opening for the coming year, even though the answer is “not yet”, I know–beyond a shadow of doubt–that new, unexpected doors are going to open for you. I know it with all that I am.

Even though the SOAR! program is resting for this next year, I will still be going forward in all our projects that seek to empower women. There are a lot of fun, inspiring, empowering events in the pipeline for 2012. Whether I see you on my blog, Facebook or The Nate Berkus Show, I hope that all I say and do continues to empower you in building your impossible dreams and experience the magic of soaring.

Thank you (honestly the words “thank you”, don’t do it justice) to our amazing SOAR! Partners the last two years:

SONY–for generously giving six women all the camera gear to start a photography business
Smug Mug and Fastline Media–creating beautiful websites for our six recipients and seriously being the fastest web help out there!
Adobe–providing all the software
ShootDotEdit–providing training and resources for post processing of images
Pixel2Canvas–training the gals in selling products and providing them with amazing samples
Jill-e Designs–Giving six women BEAUTIFUL camera bags that showed off their personality
Wendy Zippwald, our SOAR! Coordinator, who helped me all year, pro bono, with every logistic you can think of between partners, recipients and the SOAR! blog. Wendy, you are our hero!
and last, but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, the Wisdom Connection–generously provided two years of pro bono, monthly business coaching, to six women–our lives are transformed by your wisdom.

There wouldn’t be a SOAR! Scholarship without the generosity of all our partners. We are soooo thankful for each one.

And lastly, I want to thank all the SOAR! women who have followed along, done the exercises, continued to build your dreams even though you had no accountability or business coaching call to keep you going. You ladies inspire me beyond words. Even though you didn’t win the scholarship, you kept pushing forward. Every time I hear one of your stories, I am so deeply moved and proud to know you. What some of you have discovered is amazing. If you have a SOAR! story I’d LOVE to hear it.

Here are two powerful videos from women who went on to SOAR! even though they didn’t win the scholarship. I know they represent many more out there!

I’m back on The Nate Berkus Show just in time to help you capture your family Holiday Photo!

Do you still need to get your family photo done for holiday cards? If so, tune in this week on Thursday as Nate Berkus sends me to a special family who need family photos! I’m giving TONS of tips on how to take your family holiday photo (and more) in less than 30 minutes!

But it’s not all about photo tips. We are also transforming a family’s life with a special design surprise and something the mom never expected. That something is what Nate is pointing to in this photo. I was in tears, and I can’t wait for you to see!  It shows how powerful photography is in our lives.

But it’s not all about photo tips.  We are also transforming a family’s life with a special design surprise and something the mom never expected.  That something is what Nate is pointing to in this photo.  I was in tears, and I can’t wait for you to see!

I want to give a BIG thank you to SONY for also giving this mom the camera everyone wants this holidays! She is getting the SONY Alpha NEX 5 Digital Camera, and it’s for a special reason.

Not only can she carry this camera in her purse or pocket AND change lenses, but the Live View enables her to take photos without having to hide her face behind the camera. This means her youngest one can keep eye contact with her which is everything. You’ll understand when you see the show. (oooh, I’m so excited.)

A camera, photo tips and a surprise design are going to change this family’s life!

And…that’s not all!!

Roxanne, the amazing woman behind CanvasRox and ALL our canvases and metals came through for us at the last minute for this show! She plays a special part that is going to give to YOU too! Listen carefully to Nate because he will announce a ROCKING holiday discount and coupon code for all of you who want to give canvases as gifts this holiday season!

I’m telling you, this show is packed with goodness for not only a special family but your family too!

See it Thursday! (you may want a Kleenex box…I needed one!)

Meet  Fabulous Photographer and Amazing Mom Wendy Zippwald from Oahu, Hawaii!

(Above image by Brenda Van Valkenburg of Brenda Van Photos)

This is our last Amazing Mom interview for 2011, and it is a complete honor to have it be Wendy Zippwald!!  Some of you know Wendy as an amazing photographer, but she is many, many things to this community!  She has also been the greatest SOAR! Coordinator I could ever ask for!  She has helped me lead this year’s SOAR! Scholarship with integrity and grace, and seriously, I don’t know what I would do without her.  Wendy has also helped host our Ask & Learn Forums on Thursday nights that we have all been inspired by!  Her energy is contagious.  She has a heart to help others.  Her photography, as you are about to see, is GORGEOUS!  Wendy, thank you for all that you do and most importantly, all that you are.  You are a gift to ALL of us!

Everyone, meet Wendy!  Be prepared to be inspired!

Q:  Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in the photography business?

I am proud to say I grew up in the great Midwest and hold those values that most Midwesterners do, even after moving all over the United States in the past 11 years.  Being an Air Force spouse is engraved in me.  I can’t imagine my life without the Air Force.  Scott and I have been blessed with wonderful opportunities and great places to live.  We have 2 boys, Cooper and Caden who always trek along with no complaints (I don’t think they are old enough yet).  You can read 25 more interesting facts about me on my website under “Meet Wendy”.

I have always been interested in photography.  I have owned many cameras throughout the years as technology has changed.  I thought I wanted to explore starting a business when I attended Me Ra’s Confidence workshop in April of 2007 in Sonoma, California.  When I left Me Ra’s workshop, I knew I wanted to start a business. I went home to portfolio-build and never looked back.

Q:  What inspires your  photography?

The People I shoot inspire me.  I take the time to watch how they all interact and try to capture those sweet in-between moments.  They inspire me to want each shot to be better than the last at telling their story, showing their personality and the connections they share.

Q:  What inspires you as a person, artist?

I am 100% completely inspired by my amazing husband.  For the past 20 years he has dedicated his life to the Air Force.  We have moved 6 times in the past 11 years and each time he begins his new position with courage and stamina like he has been doing it for many years.  He amazes me with his knowledge of each new position he starts…can you imagine doing a brand new job every 1-2 years with very little guidance of how to do it?  He is a self-starter and is teaching our sons to be just like that.  I love you honey and I am proud to stand at your side in this journey!

Q:  How do you prepare for a photography session?

Before each session I reread the client questionnaire they filled out to refresh on all the names of people involved in the session and and what the mom (usually) would like me to capture.  This helps me to “get my game on” beforehand.  I also make sure my camera battery is charged and I have at least 3 CF cards in my bag.  I don’t need all the CF space anymore, I take them just in case one goes bad while shooting.  Then I go through my checklist to make sure camera settings are correct.  White balance on Auto, ISO at 200, Aperture at 2.8.  These are all my starting points when I pick up my camera.  I did this checklist because when I was first starting out and would do a session which ended at sunset and then do a session the next day during the daytime,  I would get all nervous about meeting a new client and forget to switch my ISO back to 200, so I would shoot a whole session in daylight at like ISO 800, which on my first camera was a big deal.

Q:  How would you describe your photography style?

Simple…3 C’s…Crisp, Colorful and Clean.  I usually sharpen up the image and bump up the color in Post-Processing, but I don’t use textures or many actions in PS.

Q:  Tell us the story of this recent image.

I have an early childhood and elementary education background, so I pretty much know how to work with kiddos, well most kiddos. :)   The little guy in this image wanted nothing, I mean nothing, to do with me and my camera this day.  I chased him around the beach for a good amount of time.  Mom really wanted me to try to get all three of them in an image, but this little guy was as fast at getting up as I was at putting him down.  So as the two older children were running on the beach we decided to get him to run with them.  Easier said than done.  I wish I could post the “outtakes” of the mom and sitter trying to help on this.   Well, I gave it one last try, bumped up my Aperture a little to 3.3 and tested the exposure before I let them go.  As they were getting close to me running this was one of the frames as I held down the shutter.  Even though the little girl is a little out of focus, I am in love with the color and the motion of this image.  It also turned out to be ones of mom’s favorites.

Q:  What are some of the best resources you have used for learning?

1. Me Ra’s CONFIDENCE  Workshop!  No doubt, I would not be where I am today without attending her workshop.  More on that below!

2. Pinkletoes-Michelle Anderson
Without the PT4P subscription I would not have been able to handle the business portion of running a photography business.  Her downloads helped me get my initial paperwork done and keep me organized!

3.  Scott Kelby-Understanidng Exposure-A really good read that I send home with those that I mentor.

4. Clickin Moms Forum, Go4ProPhotos, and Flickr Discussion Groups were my earlier websites and learning forums.  I have now narrowed it down and am a member of CM Pro, the Bloom Forum and the B School.  I also just stumbled upon Elizabeth Halford’s site for learning.  A great one!

5.  MCP Actions Blog-Another great site for learning.

Q:  What is one of the best pieces of advice you have been given?
“Your images can be good, even great…but what keeps clients coming back is you.  You give 200% to each and every client.”  When I am shooting a family, a wedding, or a military homecoming…I am there, I mean really there. Nothing in the world matters to me at those moments, but making the wonderful people that stand on the other side of my camera comfortable enough to show me their true personalities.  I want my clients to think of me as “their friend” once the session is complete.

I want to share a story about really “caring” for your clients and going the extra mile.  The image below is a friend of mine here in Hawaii.  I didn’t know her really well before her session but now we are much closer since her session.  On her client questionnaire  that everyone fills out when they book me, she said, “We had a baby girl who was stillborn at full term with a fatal birth defect. We named her Hope Elizabeth and she is very much a part of our family and interwoven into our conversations. We celebrate her birthday each year as a BIG family day, etc. I would LOVE to do something maybe with HOPE written in the beach sand. “  Well my wheels started turning in my head about how I could make it even more special for her.  I decided to make this quick “HOPE” banner that I pulled out for them in front of my favorite Banyan tree.  She was left speechless.  That was a bonding moment for us all and that is what I am talking about when I speak about giving 200% to each and every client.

Q:  What is one piece of advice you could give a “newbie”?

If I could tell newbies one thing…I think it would be that starting a photography business doesn’t happen overnight.  You must be as prepared on the business side of it as you are on the photography/technique part of it.  It is very hard to catch up on the business side of it if you jump in too soon.   I also highly suggest that you are shooting in manual before you start your business.   Oops, I guess that was two.

Q:  What is the best piece of Marketing advice you can give at this time?

I think the most important piece of marketing that has really grown my business is word of mouth.  You have got to get your name out there.  Don’t be afraid to tell people that you are a photographer.  Practice in your mirror if you have to, but do it!  I also think it is very important to start networking with other photographers in your area…immediately!  Join a SMUGMUG Meet-up, Pursuit 31 Group or PUG (Pictage User Group).  I get a ton of referrals from local photogs that are either booked, an inquiry is not a good fit for them, or even moving.  Network Ladies!

Q:  How do I know Me Ra Koh?

Four years ago now, I was Googling everything about photography under the sun.  I just happened to come across her website.  I spent the next 5 hours reading the entire Archives of her blog.  After that I decided to put her CONFIDENCE Workshop on my Christmas list (I know, a little large on the gift), but I did and I knew my hubby knew how important it was to me, as he heard “Me Ra this and Me Ra that” for the past couple weeks.  So about 2 weeks before the holidays, I was messing around with my DSLR and had screwed up some setting.  I was walking down the stairs in our house, cussing under my breath, and the phone was ringing.  I got to the bottom of the stairs and Scott handed me the phone and said, “Tech support for fuzzy pictures is on the phone”.  Me Ra was on the other end of the line, telling me that my dear husband was surprising me with a trip to the Sonoma CONFIDENCE Wkshp in April and she couldn’t wait to meet me.  Blah, blah, blah, you can read more about this story on Me Ra’s blog.  Yes that is me in hot pink PJ’s!

Anyway, that was my first encounter with Me Ra.  I had no idea that attending her workshop in Sonoma, would forever change my life in so many ways.  Yes, I went home with the Confidence and tools to start my own photography business.  But I also gained some serious new BFF’s that weekend.  We still to this day hold each other accountable, hug when needed, listen to each other joys and tears and just plain love each other.

From there we kept in touch a couple of times, but when she announced that she needed a coordinator for the SOAR! Scholarship I thought that would be a perfect fit for me at the time.  It has been an amazing year for us all and I am so blessed to end this year’s cast of wonderful Ask and Learn Photographers.

It has been a complete joy serving this year as the SOAR! Coordinator.  I love this community and think it is a great place for support, whether it is about photography or just life as a woman and mom.  I wish you all success in your business ventures.  Please give me a ring if you think I can help you in any way!

Happy Monday ladies!  Last night we wrapped up our Dallas CONFIDENCE Workshop.  What a WONDERFUL group of ladies to end 2011.  Two rich days of seeing women’s live transformed, laughing so much our side hurt, and getting out of our comfort zone to reach new heigths in our creativity!  Thank you Dallas ladies!!!

And welcome to Day 2 of the Sacramento CONFIDENCE!  Check out TWENTY TWO inspirational photos for working with families of all ages! Starting with our beautiful Charisse, this year’s SOAR! Recipient!  So fun to have Charisse on the “other” side of the camera for a while!  Charisse, you were an awesome sport and incredible model!

Angela Cole, there are SO MANY things I love about this first photo–but most of all–I love how the daughter is STANDING!  It’s PERFECT!!!  Way to have the family all in unison because that makes the daughter’s personality shine even more.  You rocked this shot!

Ladies, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the background in the photo above and below the same garage or siding?  If so, that is wild!  I LOVE how different the family story is for each of these.  You would NEVER know it was the same place!

Stephanie Elie did a FANTASTIC job with this photo.  This little guy was on the move the whole time, and you had to be quick on your feet to capture him.  Not only do we have a great action shot of him, but mom and dad look SO AWESOME!  Stephanie, this was not an easy shot but you knocked it out of the park!  Great job!

Sarah Nguyen caught this precious image.  This little one also stole our hearts.  His little, chubby fingers…those folds around his wrists.  I love this photo Sarah because it was easy to become hooked on his blue eyes, but this is a photo that captures his sense of discovery, playfulness, and all around sweetness.  Really great job!

I love this candid moment that Paula Orologas captured.  The mom is looking so beautiful and the girl is adorable with those huge “catch lights”!

These next two photos from Myriam Acfalle and Lauren Laing are fun to have side by side because the energy is so different between a vertical and horizontal.  Have you ever looked through your images and noticed what you tend to shoot more of?  Do you naturally shoot more vertical images or more horizontal images?  It’s important to know so you can make sure to get a few of the other before a shoot is over.

Now this is an image you could set up a million times and probably never get this type of reaction again.  What a cutie!  Awesome catch…Maria Adams!

What a super candid moment with this family,  Marcy Johns!  The joy on mom’s face really draws us in to this image, and then him all turned around….goodness.  This is one they should put on their wall.

Is he just precious or what?!  Laura Chesniak caught this super cute guy with the best “smile with your eyes”!  And I adore dad’s face in the background.

Kerrie Little, what a sweet moment you caught between Charisse and her daughter!  Isn’t that what we all strive for in our images…genuine emotion?!

Ajira’s family is so photogenic!  Ajira is a past workshop attendee and active SOAR sista!  Ajira, you are a special lady!  We were so excited she wanted to join us as family models this weekend.  Jen Rich captured this tender family moment between them. Remember when you are shooting that you can “photo coach” the family to start with, but it will be those in-between moments you capture that will be priceless.  Do not stop shooting too soon:)

Cyndi Zuniga, this is another example of “setting the family up” and then just shooting away while talking to them.  You caught mom and dad looking at you, yet you also got this great interactive moment between brother and sister that you could never have asked for.  Great job!

Aviva Roller, you may give up that whole lawyer gig and think of a new career!  This photos is ADORABLE!!!  These two were on the go at all times, but what an adorable moment of the kids with mom and dad framing them.  I LOVE it!  Great job lady!  (And I tried that yoga place, girl…I’ve got a story to share with you!  Ha!)

April Durrett, you took on of the few images of dad with his little girl.  This is one of those occasions that cutting dad’s head off really works.  It brings all the focus to the little munchkin, yet still gives us dad’s facial expression. Really nice cropping!

Annie Piros, I am so glad you captured this little guy with his innocent laughter and smile.  The blurred back ground gives us a nice portrait look!

Behind the Scenes on Day 2…Family Day!

We had a great space to work with at the B&B.  An alley was off to the side of us which held all kinds of options and magic that you may not have noticed first off–but the ladies found!  (And ladies, remember how great it was to stand in front of a garage when Brian talked about storage and archiving?!  Really made the example clear, didn’t it!  :) LOL!

Just fifty feet down the alley was a whole different setting, look, feel, everything!

I’m so proud of all that you captured ladies!  This is only a small sampling of the dozens and dozens of photos the baby and family models were given.  I’ve already heard back from some of your models on how BLESSED they feel to have been with us, and how extremely HAPPY they are with your photos.  You should all be proud!

(And keep an eye out for that Photo Organization and Archiving/Remote Support “thingy” we were talking about after Lightroom.  Brian has been working on it ever since.  I think you ladies are going to LIKE IT!)

Love you all!

xo,

m
