Brian and I got the most wonderful gift in the mail.

The San Diego workshop ladies, sent us a package with page upon page of thank you’s and feedback from our time together this last May.

Wow, this was so unexpected. Brian and I were overwhelmed to read some of the things you wrote. Thank you so much for sharing from your heart and letting Brian and I know how much the workshop not only impacted your love for photography but your own inner wells of creativity, femininity, and healing. Brian and I were speechless as we read all your beautiful comments.

And on top of all this, the San Diego ladies sent us a beautiful necklace. Well, they sent me the necklace–not Brian. :) And I LOVE it!!

One of the mommy models in our workshop has her own jewelry business and made this herself. So beautiful. The necklace says “San Diego” through and through. This is a photo of her and her daughters. The amazing Carey of Barefoot Memories caught this beautiful shot.

Every time we teach a workshop, Brian and I feel so blessed to make new lifetime friends. We see lives change, healing ushered, and creativity infused. The weekends together are truly divine times. Thank you for affirming this in all that you wrote to us. Seeing your names took me back down memory lane!

(all these San Diego workshop photos are from Carey’s fantastic blog!)

All this talk makes me excited for the Chicago and Seattle workshops. Who will we meet? What challenges will these women face? What freedom will they find? What things will we laugh about and cry about? I can’t wait. Brian is especially excited about the crying part! :)

Last thing, if you haven’t been able to register for the Truth or Dare 1 day conference, the registration is running! I’m going to end the whole day with a special event for women only. It’s called “More than Emotion: The Undercurrents of Feminine Wisdom”. Click the title to read all the details around this special session that is so close to my heart.

The whole day is crazy cheap! $39 per person. AND everyone gets a free PDF copy of Fast Track Photographer by Dane Sanders. Insane, huh!! Come join us! It’s going to be crazy fun!

Also, if you are interested in more details on the Seattle December Workshop, click here. For the next couple weeks, we are offering the Early Bird Discount. See all the good stuff by clicking away!

I have exciting news!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this on the blog yet, but the Pictage Partner Conference is September 9th and 10th 2008. (but this isn’t even the half of it!)

If you are a Pictage member, you must come to their conference! The conferences are so much fun, and you walk away with such good information and new friendships. The networking that happens is worth every penny it costs to come. Brian and I are also teaching a special session called Photo Coaching.

We’re going to demonstrate how we Photo Coach our clients when shooting so they are able to relax in front of the camera. To read our summary, click here!

But it gets even better! I’m posting this blog on a Friday afternoon because Monday, September 8th, the day BEFORE Partnercon, is a GO!!

What’s Monday, September 8th?

The awesome Photography Mentor team has decided to do a one day seminar for $39!!! It’s the Truth or Dare Event! (Hear the Truth and Dare to Stand Out!)

This means you get to hear direct from Carlos Baez, Robert Evans, Sara France and Dane Sanders. AND…Pictage is going help sponsor all this PLUS, a special evening event that I get to lead for women!

The evening event is why I’m posting this on a Friday afternoon! This session is one of those things that I’ve had a desire to do for a few years, and I’ve put it out there and for one reason or another it just hasn’t worked out. But it’s going to work out and happen on Monday night, September 8th!!

I have had a vision to do a Women’s Evening Event where we set our cameras down and talk about what it means to be wise women. How this affects our business, our family, our dreams. I asked Pictage a few months back if I could do this at Pictage’s LA conference. Pictage loved the idea, and then we started talking with our friends at Photography Mentor, and then we all got together and the Women’s Evening Event is a GO!!

From 7pm-9pm, Monday, September 8th, (the night before Pictage’s Conference starts) we are going to come together as women, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters and friends.

Here is a brief summary on what this evening session is going to be about.

More than Emotion: The Undercurrents of Feminine Wisdom

This is an evening session set aside for women only. Together we are going to explore the inner workings of what makes us different than men and how this affects everything from our business, to those we love, and those we lead. Before her photography career, Me Ra Koh traveled nationwide speaking to thousands of women on subjects surrounding the beauty and strength of femininity. Join her for a window of time as we step outside of photography and speak to the power and grace of feminine wisdom. The format of this evening is three fold; Me Ra will share her heart on matters that define the undercurrents of feminine wisdom. She will then lead participants in a time of personal reflection. And then the evening will end with guided small group discussions. We invite you to a special evening of building relationships with others and yourself.

A couple years ago, I started out on a journey to know what it means to run my business in a feminine way. Without doubt, I have started finding so much more strength and success because I have learned to approach my business as a wise woman would. I make decisions and execute strategies that pull on all my feminine wisdom. On the outside, it may or may not look different. But the internal structure of my business, family and friendship is very different than how a man might run his business. Neither one is better than the other, but it feels right to do it the way a woman would since I am a woman. Right? :) I’m not talking about Women’s Rights and Feminine Power stereotypes. I’m talking about operating in grace, fluidness, sensitivity, and creativity–all the things that make up our design as women. I am so excited to set the cameras down and spend an evening on this subject.

Are there any women out there who will you join me? This evening is a test for some–a test to see if there really is a need out there for this type of event at photography conferences. By joining me on Monday night, September 8th, you help me show them that there certainly is!

We are going to dive deep into what makes us wise women. And let me tell you, it’s so much more than emotions! If you are a woman with a camera, set your camera down, breathe deep and come join us for this special evening! I am counting the days!

If you aren’t signed up for Pictage’s Conference yet, head on over there!

See you at Pictage Partner Conference L.A.

And then get over to Photography Mentor to sign up for the Truth or Dare event on Monday.

Space is limited, and you know Monday’s event is going to go fast when it only costs $39!

Photo Contests! and Workshops & Speaking22 Aug 2008 11:52 am

It’s been so exciting to watch people vote and comment on the Five Finalists for the Water Photo Contest! Aren’t they all AMAZING!

I’ve got a few great links you must check out! I just found them as I’ve been reading through your votes.

For one, I didn’t realize Ali, photographer of the Wet Dog, has a blog too! Oh my goodness, her baby photos are just breathtaking! Go check out her blog!

I also followed Kirsten’s blog, photographer of Dancing on Water, to a Flickr page with more Dancing on Water images. These images are so cool! I wish I was there shooting with you Kirsten. That event looked like a blast!

Then this morning I got an email from Banner in Charleston. Banner and I met through my blog, and I just love Banner’s zeal for her photography business. She sent me a link to an artist named Eric Zener who does paintings of swimmers. These paintings are incredible! I have to share them with you too. And check out Banner’s beautiful work while you’re at it! (Thanks for sharing the paintings with us Banner!)

Now for the December Workshop Announcement!

Your votes were so helpful and difficult at the same time! It was practically a tie between two options! So after much conversation, Brian and I came up with a plan.

Starting Monday morning, registration for the popular Beginner 2 Day Workshop on December 6th and 7th 2008 will go live!

This will be Early Bird Registration!! This means if you sign up before September 20th, the tuition is $749 instead of $999! So get ready, and come find the link on Monday morning to sign up!

Since there were so many people who voted for the Combo Deal, we are going to offer this workshop in 2009! We’re still thinking on whether we’ll do this in Seattle or somewhere else, or both! We will let you know in the near future. Stay tuned!

But back to the voting for the Five Finalists! They are all talented and deserve every vote and wonderful comment they get! Keep passing the word! It’s a wonderful gift to give them, and if we hit 400 VOTES by midnight on Tuesday we’re giving one lucky voter a copy of Adobe’s Lightroom!

Love you all and have a wonderful weekend!

p.s. Remember that new photography exercise I was going to post this week? Didn’t forget. It’s coming on Monday or Tuesday, and I think you’re going to have fun with it! xoxo

Workshops & Speaking19 Aug 2008 05:37 am

Brian and I got to brainstorming the other day around the idea of the upcoming December Workshop. (look out!!)

A number of you have been sending us emails with all kinds of workshop requests. Some of you have asked for a Beginner Workshop, like what we’ve done on our City Tour this year. Some of you have also emailed for an Advanced Workshop. And yes, some of you have requested a combo of both. Our readers are very clear on what they want! :) We love this about all of you!

Based on all your emails, we have come up with three different ideas. If you are thinking of attending our Dec. 6 and 7th 2008 workshop, which one of these combos would you prefer attending? Based on what the results are, we’ll release registration for the December 2008 workshop!

*Please note, we ask that you only vote if you are planning or thinking of attending the Seattle, December Workshop. This way it gives us a true idea of what to release. If you want to vote for your own city, please do on the poll below!

Here’s the poll to vote for the December workshop and below the poll are the descriptions of each. (This is a little warm up on voting so your all ready to vote for the winner of the Water Photo Contest tomorrow! :))

What Combo Workshop Do You Want in December 2008?
( polls)

Descriptions of the Options!

Option A: 2 Day Beginner Workshop!

We do our popular Refuse to Say Cheese, 2 day, Beginner Workshop. The women who attend this workshop vary in levels. We start with the basics and build our way up through post process and lighting. These workshops often sell out and leave people with a desire to attend an Advanced Workshop. The tuition for this workshop is $999, but if you register before Sept. 20th you can get the Early Bird Discount and pay only $749.

Option B: 2 Day Advanced Workshop!

The return of our 2 Day Advanced Workshop! We did this last October, it sold out with people coming from all over the country. We spent the first day on reviewing the Basics and then focusing on Advanced Lighting. posing and technique. We spent the second day talking about the Business side of running a photography part-time or full time business (i.e. marketing, packaging, pricing, etc.) The tuition for this workshop is also $999, but if you register before Sept. 20th you can get the Early Bird Discount and pay only $749.

Option C: The Combo Deal!

We COMBO the two workshops in 3 jam packed days! This is for all you who emailed and asked us to spend 1 day on the Beginner stuff and 2 days on the Advanced stuff. And that’s what we would do! This is the workshop for those of you who would like a refresher on the Basics but want to have a bit more focus on the Advanced Lighting and Business side. We would start Friday morning and end Sunday evening. Okay, Brian and I had fun coming up with the pricing for this. Technically, based on our tuition costs, the workshop would be $1499 for 3 full days. But if you sign up before Sept. 20th, you get the CRAZY Early Bird Discount of all three days for $999! Isn’t that cool!! I think that’s the BEST deal of all.

But you tell us! What do you want to have happen this December in Seattle! Your wish is what we will do!

But wait! Help us plan for 2009’s City Tour too! (And again, only vote if you plan on attending the workshop you are voting for. Thanks so much!)

I VOTE for this Workshop in 2009!

Happy Friday! What a week it’s been with this nasty cold!

I fly out this evening to San Francisco to do a photoshoot for Sophia’s Smile! I’m so excited! In fact, if you are in the Bay area you can look at the website link and join us!

And even better, I get to have a beautiful brunch with my Next Octave girlfriends on Sunday. I am in need of some great “girl time”! We haven’t gathered as a group since early May, and I can’t wait to catch up on how all our businesses, loves, and leadership roles are doing. Brian is going to brave the kids, Rosie and Prince Phillip by himself. I’m sure you’ll find them poolside at the Tennis Club if you need him. Make sure he doesn’t have more than one Margarita! :)

On to Housekeeping! First things first!

The Chicago Workshop is SOLD OUT!!!

And the waiting list is going!

If you are already signed up and wondering about hotel rates, our wonderful workshop hostess, Gretchen, is working away on this. She hopes to have some ideas to us by next week! Stay tuned!

And if you are signed up and wanting to join us for the amazing Add On Day with Bob and Dawn Davis, hold your horses! We are going to allow all registered attendees to sign up first and then if there is any room left, we’ll open it to the public. For registered attendees, look for an email in the next week about how to sign up to see Bob and Dawn!

One last workshop item. Start thinking about a woman you know who is Running On Empty. That’s right, we have the Running On Empty contest for the Chicago workshop coming up! We want to bless a woman out there who is in desperate need of a break from life, an encouraging word and creative inspiration. Be thinking because the nominations will go live in the next couple of weeks.

I lied, one more workshop item. We are still thinking about having a Seattle Workshop the first weekend of December (6th and 7th). I just need to see if our schedule can make it happen. We’ve got a couple crazy, big projects going right now (I mean CRAZY-BIG!). As soon as I have it figured out, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, feel free to keep sending me your emails if you’re interested. I’ve been collecting them into one big folder and plan to send a note out to all of you when we are official on the Seattle date.

If Chicago isn’t your city, where do you want us to consider coming in 2009? You can always email us at mera@merakoh.com and put the word in!

Next…The FORUM, the forum, the FREAKING FORUM!!!!! Can you hear me scream this? :)

The forum has been a journey all in itself! Brian emailed a half dozen of you that replied to wanting to be Beta Testers (thank you, thank you, thank you for volunteering!). I guess he got so many emails that he asked if I would jump on here and thank everyone. If you didn’t hear back from him, it’s because he has already moved forward. But he wanted me to make sure you knew it wasn’t a personal thing! As soon as our Beta Testers are doing trying out a few things, we’ll be that much closer to going LIVE!

Last…the Photo Contests! (yeah! We love the Photo Contests!)

We’ve got the Water Contest to finish up! I’m so excited to post our top Five Finalists next week for the Water Contest! I don’t think we ever said what the prize would be. How about a copy of Adobe’s Lightroom software! Keep an eye out this coming week for the Five Wonderful Finalists!

And a special word to all our voters!!

I had so much fun creating my own “Starbucks Gift Cards” (you know you can customize the image and text!) that I want to do the same thing for the Random Voter Awards on the Water Contest and Pet Contest. But it has to be $25 instead of $20. I know, bummer. Starbucks will only let you have $25. :) And if you don’t like Starbucks, we’ll give you another option or two.

The last day to submit photos for the Pet Photo Contest is the last day of August. The contest officially ends on Sunday, August 31st at midnight PST.

Have a wonderful weekend friends!

Photography Tips for Moms and Workshops & Speaking23 Jul 2008 05:06 am

If you didn’t make it to the Photography Session at BlogHer 08 this year, I wanted to make sure you got the Cliff Notes! Try some of these tips out and you’ll see your blog photos shine even brighter! We’ll start somewhat easy, get a little more technical and then end easy. :)

1. Define Emotion: When trying to decide if an image should be black and white vs color, ask yourself if b/w will help define the emotion. Sidenote: Brian and I shoot every thing in color and in RAW format. We don’t use the presets in the camera for b/w images. We make all those changes after the shoot in post process.

Example: I love this fun shot of dad and his boys. But when we see it in black and white, I feel like the emotion on dad’s face is much more defined.

2. Fill the Frame: Think about the Third’s Principle and Make Sure Your Background has Purpose

If you were to break your frame into thirds, is every third filled with something that accentuates the story of the photo? The story of the photo above is really about Blaze and his curiosity, where I decide to place Blaze (in what third of the picture frame) makes a big difference. I like his curiosity poking out from the bottom corner. This subject of framing, composition and the Third’s Principle is also covered in more depth on our DVD 1, Refuse to Say Cheese!

3. Less is More: See if you can capture a shot without any facial expressions, yet still have strong emotion. Brian is the master at this!

4. How Blurry Do You Want Your Background? The lower your aperture/fstop, the more blur in your background. The image below was shot at a 2.8 fstop. Check your lens to see how low your fstop will go. To enjoy the blur effect, you are going to want a lens that drops down to 2.8 or even lower.

Portrait Mode (the lady’s head icon) is essentially giving you a lower aperture automatically. But you can have fun and take control by switching to Aperture Priority Mode. This means you pick the degree of blur (by picking your fstop) and the camera decides the shutter speed for you. The subject of aperture, shutter speed and ISO are all covered in depth on DVD 2, Beyond the Green Box!

5. How Low Can You Go with Your ISO? The lower your ISO, the better your color saturation.

The image above was at a 100 ISO during “sweet light”. Sweet Light is that time of night when the sun has just set and the sky is the bluest it will ever be during the night (lasts about 15-20 minutes). Brian shot this using a tripod, low ISO, higher aperture for more detail instead of blur and a shutter speed that stayed open for 4-5 seconds. This example is a night shot, but we try to shoot at a 100 ISO whenever possible, day or night.

6. AI Servo is the Secret for Swinging! If you want shots of your kids on the swing or riding bikes, try your AI Servo setting because it will lock focus on your subject if they are moving toward you or away from you. For photo examples, go back to the Training Wheels post! These photos were all shot in AI Servo mode. Or here is a favorite wedding example.

7. No-nonsense Tips to Flash Lighting! The secret to using an external flash is where you point your flash head (yep, it moves. :)). As Brian would say, “Think of holding a super ball and wanting to hit your subject in the head with it. What wall should you throw your super ball against so that it bounces back and hits the subject in the face?” (Isn’t that great of Brian. That’s what he’s thinking when taking pictures of a bride! How can I hit her in the face with a super ball!) :)

Example #1: This is from the other night and the flash is pointing right at Pascaline and Blaze. See those nasty shadows around them and the black cave effect behind them? Yuck! Blaze looks like someone took charcoal from the fireplace and blew it on him.

Example #2: I took my flash head and instead of pointing it at them, I pointed it straight up at the ceiling. The effect is better, but I don’t usually like to bounce off the ceiling because of the shadows it can create under the eyes. You can see how it accentuates dark circles under her eyes, but it is way better than Example #1. Yet, we can get even better!

Example #3: Brian loves to aim his flash head off to the side with a slight tilt. He’s aiming that “super ball” where the wall meets the ceiling. Does that make sense? It brings back a nice side lighting that can look similar to lamp light or window light. Ohhhh, that is way better!

Example #4: This one is my favorite way to use a flash. I like to turn the flash head and point it straight behind me. The only downside is people will tell me all night at a wedding reception that my flash is backward. :) But the upside is that I get this wonderful, flattering light on the subject’s face. AND, no shadows friends!! What a difference between Example #1 and #4!

Recipe settings for using an external flash? We often have our ISO at 800, our Shutter Speed at 1/60 or 60th of a second and Aperture around 4.5-5.6 (depending on the shot). Try it out at home. External flash is WAY easier than you would ever think! You can totally do this!

8. Play, play, play with your Shutter Speed. If you need more available light then slow your shutter speed down. If you need less light speed it up. The key is to stop feeling intimidated by your camera and just play. Mistakes are necessary when getting better at photography. The subject of Shutter Speed and shooting in Manuel is talked about a lot more in DVD 2, Beyond the Green Box, with exercises for you to try too!

If I speed the Shutter Speed up on this image, then there is less light. If I slow the Shutter Speed down there is more light and you would probably see less and less of the outdoor furniture behind Pascaline.

9. Three Keys to Post Process for Me Ra and Brian…I keep it simple because I don’t have a lot of time to spend in Photoshop. I may apply actions, but at the very least I do these three things.

#1 Add Contrast

#2 Decide if image should be BW or stay in Color

#3 Add a soft vignette around the outer edges. The vignette setting is easy to use in Lightroom.

10. Pick ONE Tip at a Time. Every year Brian and I pick on thing to work on. One year it was working on improving our color images because most of us see in color so how can we make a color image stand out even more? One year, we focused on Off Camera Lighting.

Remember, one thing at a time. Otherwise you get overwhelmed and miss out on how much fun photography is.

Mistakes are necessary when getting better at photography–mistake away!!

Where to go and what to do if you want more photography exercises and tips?

We cover these subjects and much, much more in depth at our workshops. Chicago has a couple spaces left if you are in the area, and we may open one up for early December too! (are there still December takers? if so, email me at mera@merakoh.com)

Can’t make it to a workshop? You can check out the DVDs mentioned above. We get amazing feedback every week from people watching our DVDs and trying out the exercises! Sidenote: We realized late last night that our website host didn’t tell us it had updated things in our shopping cart. This means that since last Wed no one has been able to finalize a purchase. BROTHER! No wonder the sales were not happening, it seemed unusual but you know how you get busy with stuff and then leaving for San Fran, we totally forgot. Anyway, such is life. We poured ourselves a glass of wine and got to the bottom of the issue. All fixed now–for real! :)

Want a free option? You can check out all the Photography Tips for Moms that I’ve posted! There are over 102 posts in that category so have fun!! And don’t forget to send me some of your results!

Workshops & Speaking22 Jul 2008 08:32 am

Brian and I are back from the most wonderful weekend in San Francisco!

On Friday night, we met some of the women who are in my Next Octave coaching group (and their great husbands) for dinner. Brian got to meet these amazing women in person, and we all talked for hours. It was a perfect dinner! Thank you ladies!

Next came Saturday: Day Two of BlogHer 08! Hundreds of women from all over the country came to San Francisco for the annual BlogHer Conference. I was honored to join in the fun and teach a photography workshop to these amazing, beautiful blogging superstars!

I would say 98% of the sessions were panel discussions with 3-4 women bloggers up front speaking. But the BlogHer staff was kind enough to let me to do the photography session solo, and we were packed out with women sitting on the floor and standing outside the doorways! The enthusiasm they had for taking better photos was wonderful!

(I just love how Brian tilted the camera to capture this little baby’s eyes. :))

This picture is to fun not to share. I was giving out door prizes of Refuse to Say Cheese, Beyond the Green Box, the Portrait 101 Kit, and Adobe’s Lightroom. When I held up the Portrait 101 Kit to give away, the two women in the front went crazy over it. See what I mean, this was a super fun audience!

BlogHer had posted on their site months back the question, “What do you want to hear about from Me Ra Koh at BlogHer 08?” We posted four different topics I could speak on and asked them to vote. The response was so diverse that I decided to mix all four topics and created a talk called “The Top Ten Tips that Shape Our Images.” Assuming the levels of photography would be super diverse, I started out easy for the beginners in the room and then got more and more difficult for the more advanced people in the room.

A number of you have asked me to post the outline from the session. Great idea! Check back tomorrow because not only will I post the outline, but I’ll post some of the image examples too.

Aside from the fun of getting to speak at BlogHer, I also got to catch up with some of the wonderful ladies I met when I spoke at the Sony’s Mommy Blogging Event! It was great fun to see them again and catch up! Becoming more acquainted with the blogging world has been fascinating and the Sony Mommy Bloggers are nothing short of amazing!

And to top it off, Tracey Clark and I finally got to meet in person! Yeah!

Tracey is such a kindred spirit. She is the founder of Shutter Sisters, an author, a wonderful photographer, mama and beautiful wife. We had such fun talking that Brian and I almost missed our flight home. In fact, the flight ended up being delayed and that is the only reason we didn’t miss it! But our only regret is we didn’t get to hook up with Garrett and Rick! Next time you guys, we still need to experience Garrett’s cooking! :) (Great shots of Justin Timberlake! Way to go you guys!!!)

But I know what is on all your minds. Your waiting to hear what Batman has to do with any of this blogging craziness. Okay, I’ll get to the real meat of today’s post. :)

Brian and I bought tickets for Batman on Saturday night. The theater was in a mall downtown. We got there an hour early and decided to do some window browsing. After fifteen minutes we decide to get our seat “early”. Okay, whatever! The lady says we need to get in line by the windows. Sure. No problem. But wait, the line runs all along the windows on the main floor, goes up to the 2nd floor, 3rd floor and wraps around the whole 4th floor! People in the front of this mammoth line had been there since 7pm! Our showing was 10:30pm. The math kills me! They had been waiting in line for over three hours!! Serious.

Assuming we’d be sitting in the front row, the line actually continued for quite some time after us. I think our theater held 1000 people because somehow we ended up getting good seats! But word of caution, this movie is on the dark side. Not for kids in the least. And Joker is so convincing that he creeped me out. But Brian, oh boy, Brian was in heaven. Don’t forget, he is the actual Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) in disguise as Brian, Me Ra Koh’s husband. :)

p.s. Our product’s site, Refuse to Say Cheese, went down today. I know a lot of you from the conference were hoping to purchase the DVDs and 101 Kits on line. We should have the site back up soon! Thanks for understanding. (Don’t you just love the timing of sites going down? :))

My little wifey and our kiddies mama asked me to post where and when she’s planning on having dinner in Denver tonight.

If you want to get some food inside the Whole Foods Market deli, Me Ra will meet you at the outside tables and chairs depending on how long the photo shoot goes today. Below I posted the address, time and links for directions.

Where: Whole Foods Market 870 S Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80246-2014

When: June 22, at 4:30 or 5:00 PM (depending on how long the photo shoot is).

Whole Foods Market near 870 S Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80246-2014

Have a great dinner and ask her some REALLLLYYYY hard questions!!!! Thanks!!!
