Photography Tips for Moms22 Oct 2008 06:21 am

Someone in the comments yesterday said, “How is this (asking us what our questions are) going to help you with your feeling overwhelmed?” Great question! Answer is…

When we’ve been on the road a lot with shoots and speaking, I know that when I come home I need to reconnect myself to the things I value and love. I make my Purple Kale drink. :) I snuggle with the kids. I pretend like I know how to walk our dog. I write. I watch movies with Brian in front of the fire. I go to the gym. And I wonder how my blog readers are doing.

With being gone so much these last few months, I feel to distant from all of you. I want to know what your thinking about, how life is going, how your photography adventures are unfolding, what is stumping you, what is frustrating you, and especially, what glass ceilings you’ve broken through. These are the things I love to hear about when we connect on the blog. Your brave experiences are the reason behind my “why” for doing this blog.

So thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your questions yesterday, all your emails. I LOVED hearing where you are at, what your struggling through, what we can discuss. I love knowing we can start having conversations that may change things around. This is thrilling for me.

Keep your questions coming! We are going to do Photography Q&A Segments on the blog over the next few weeks and start tackling your questions. I’ve even made a category for just these posts. Ask anything. Don’t worry about sounding to beginner or silly. We all start somewhere, and I’m so excited you’ve started!

Check back this afternoon for the first question(s) we tackle together!

Talk soon! Me Ra

Personal Reflections21 Oct 2008 06:20 am

Okay, it’s official. I am officially overwhelmed. We have been on the road so much since mid July (sometimes every other week) shooting like crazy. And now that our last wedding is done, I’m looking at my studio, my desk, the papers, the emails, and yep, there is a lot to catch up on. In fact, we were originally flying out to NY for Photo Plus this week and plans changed at the last minute. Even though I’ll miss reconnecting with people, I am so needing this time at home to just be, pause, enjoy my own bed and not a hotel bed, play with the kids, walk the giant puppy. :)

I tend to always feel overwhelmed around mid to late October. I think it’s because I finally feel like I’m coming up for air. But I have to say, the good news is with the help of ShootDotEdit, Pictage and Albumesque, this is the first time this season I’m feeling super overwhelmed. Before these guys were helping me, I was feeling overwhelmed through the whole summer with post process work! So I guess it’s a good thing, right? (’It’s a good thing, Me Ra. Or, it’s a better thing then it was in years past.’)

But, let’s try something fun in the midst of this. Let’s try a Q & A! Here is your chance to ask me how to tackle a photo situation. It can be around anything; tough lighting, tough client, off camera lighting, blurry backgrounds, composition, you name it. What is something you’d like to improve on or ask about when it comes to taking a certain photo?

Either post a comment or if you’d rather stay more anonymous you can email your questions to me mera@merakoh.com, I’ll pick different ones and start posting answers to them over the next few weeks. It’ll be a fun dialog we can have while I get caught up on life!

And here is on more idea, for all of you aspiring photographers who feel like Halloween photos never work…email me your dilemmas. What is the shot you are trying to get that never looks right when you shoot it? I’ll post up a couple of the Halloween specific question and answers over the next week or two, and we’ll tackle them together!

Do you like this idea?

If so, ask away!

xoxo, Me Ra

Photo Contests! and Photography Tips for Moms20 Oct 2008 06:23 am

If you haven’t heard, our current photo contest theme is an “Inspirational Object“. This means your picture has to be an object that inspires you. It cannot be a picture of any living things; flowers, pets or people. The image must be a picture of a non breathing object that gives you life in some way.

I know this is not an easy task, but such a good photo exercise to try. Objects, or should we say Details, are important to being a Story Telling Photographer. Whether you are capturing the objects in one’s home that describes who they are, or the details at a wedding, you are telling their story.

We’ve had a handful of photo submissions for this contest. But I’ve noticed there aren’t as many as we usually have. I think it’s because the theme is a bit more challenging.

So I thought I would post some tips on how to photograph objects. See if this gets your creative juices flowing!

Here are Seven Photo Tips for Shooting an Object when trying to bring still life to life!

1. Get up as close as you can to the object so that you’re filling the frame. Have as little background as possible. And if you do have any background that is recognizable, make sure it strengths your object.

Pascaline and I had our own little date yesterday and went to a local ceramic painting studio. What a blast! On a side note, while we were painting she looked at me and said, “So how is it going being a mom?” You have to love it!

Little did I know, it was the perfect place for taking pictures of objects! In regards to this first tip, I could have shot the paintbrushes even tighter, but I kind of liked clipping the side of a paint bottle to make the paintbrushes that much more powerful.

2. Set the object (depending on size) on a light colored surface. For example, if you have a white or marble cutting board try that as a background.

Or go the opposite direction and use a piece of black velvet. Black velvet is a great backdrop material because velvet soaks up all the light and creates a rich, deep black background.

3. Where is your light? Set your cutting board or black velvet next to a window for natural light. Keep that flash off. And don’t forget to play with shadows too. Sometimes shadows can enhance the drama of your object. Notice the shadows in the fork above.

4. Go as low as you can in your Fstop/Aperture to get the most buttery, blurry background possible. Low Fstops would be 3.5, 2.8, 2.0, or even 1.4.

5. If you are not comfortable shooting in Manuel, put your camera in AV or A mode (Aperture Priority). This way you get to decide how low that aperture is and your camera decides how fast your shutter speed needs to open and close.

6. Since this object doesn’t smile back at us, we need to create as much movement and energy as possible. Sometimes a simple tilt to your camera will do this. Push the lines in your image to evoke emotion. Make the lines of your teacup smile back at you. :)

7. If you process your images in Lightroom, try your vignette feature (under Lens Correction) so the four corners are a bit darker then the rest of your image. To get to this feature, put one of your images in Develop mode and you’ll see the Vignettes feature on the right hand side toward the bottom. Experiment by moving your “Amount” into the negative numbers, and then try moving your “Midpoint” into the negative numbers too.

Vignetting highlights the subject of your image even more. The slight vignetting that I did on the image below helps give the illusion that the paint bottles go on and on as they fade into the distance. The vignetting also brings more focus to the center of the frame.

One more challenge that I hope doesn’t offend anyone. A lot of the submissions have been of Bibles or crosses. There isn’t any thing wrong with these two objects being your Inspirational Object. But if you’d allow me, I’d like to challenge you to submit a second photo of a second object. We usually ask that you submit one photo only, but if you’ve submitted a photo of the Bible or cross we are making an exception.

Why? I want you to challenge yourself to think of an object that is out of the box. An everyday thing you pass everyday, or maybe something hidden away. When you first thought of what your Inspirational Object would be, an idea popped into your mind. Now put that idea on the back burner and try to think of something else. Trust me on this, you’ll get much more out of this photo exercise if you push yourself to get out of the box on what the second object could be.

The deadline for the Inspiration Object Photo Contest is this Sunday, October 26th at midnight, PST.

Have fun with this exercise. When we were shooting in Cape Cod last weekend, Brian looked at me and said, “So much of getting better at photography is just trying new things and be willing to experiment.” He is so right.

Try something new.

Experiment with light, shadows and unusual objects.

And enjoy!

Give up a BIG congrats to Baxter, Lucy and their wonderful owner/camera lady, Beth Berry!!!

Beth, you did a fantastic job with capturing Baxter and Lucy in the yellow chair! I’m a big fan of how you got out of the box, pulled a bright, yellow chair into the lawn and shot away. And even though you say these two are mischievous, boy, they seriously have me fooled!

I hope you were blessed by all the wonderful comments people left in regards to your photo. Thank you for submitting! Now it’s time to claim your prize! Which do you prefer? Your own Adobe Lightroom software to speed up your post process (fasten your seatbelt b/c Lightroom is AWESOME)…In fact, I have to tell you that Michelle, winner of our LOVE photo contest, recently emailed and said;

I choose #5 because it is well composed, has great color (black and white is too easy), and has a high fun/originality factor.

Our Second Random Voter is Jane Button!
Jane, are you here? Jane posted her vote and said;

My vote is for #5 - I can relate to the whole “fill in the blank profession” by day, aspiring photographer by night. And I love the photo as well! I hope to be able to create photographs like that with my new puppy soon!

It is a honor to be able to host such great photography contests! Your photo entries, your emails, your votes, your comments are life changing for some of the readers. Thank you.
I’m also working on a special post for Monday. It’s all about Photography Tips When Shooting Objects. Our current photo contest theme is “Inspirational Objects”. Some of you have expressed this theme being a bit tougher than other themes we’ve done. So I’ve come up with a bunch of tips that will make this exercise/photo contest even more fun and helpful. I’ll finish the post and have the photography tips go live Monday morning.
FYI, the cut off date for submitting an image to the Inspirational Objects contest is Sunday, October 26th at midnight PST !
Send your images to contest@merakoh.com .
One more big congrats to Beth, Ryan and Jane!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I’m inspired by how New England celebrates the fall. In Chatham, they bring in trucks of pumpkins and the whole town comes out to help unload the pumpkins. Their bookstores are also filled with favorite ghost stories from old Inns and Lighthouses. I took a peak at one of the books and read about how a certain Inn owner was shutting his restaurant down for the night, blew out all the candles and locked up. Then he looked in the window and ALL the candles were relit! Spooky!

On Monday morning, we did a photoshoot in Boston for Stacy Debroff, CEO of Mom Central. We got the full tour of her private garden and the Maple trees were showing off all their fall splendor. I loved how Stacey had four or five candles lit on her kitchen counter all day. Each candle was a favorite fall scent and made you want to cozy up on her couch with a good book.

Brian and I also like to take walks with the kids and collect our favorite leaves. Then we sit by the fire as we string the leaves to hang in the windows.

Last week I took advantage of the last yummy peaches and made us peach cobbler one morning for breakfast. It’s kind of a Fall’ish thing to do right?! (Any excuse to have cobbler for breakfast works for our family. :)) But my favorite…my absolute favorite is pumpkin pie with a big dollop of whip cream!

Yep, it’s safe to say that Fall is my favorite season.

What are your Fall traditions? Fall recipes, candle scents, favorite books, decorating traditions of any and all kind! What do you do for Thanksgiving? What do you do for Halloween? Tell all!

Wedding Slideshows15 Oct 2008 05:55 am

Brian and I are often asked “Where is the most beautiful place you’ve ever shot a wedding?”

Well after this weekend, we have a new answer!

Cape Cod, Massachusetts!

Brian and I have never been to Boston or the Cape, so when it came time to shoot Christine and Patrick’s wedding, we decided to tack on a couple extra days and enjoy the area. Wow…Cape Cod took our breath away!

The shingled homes with colored shutters, the quaint town of Chatham with stores named after the Mayflower, the quiet sea, the cute restaurants…it was amazing! You may be thinking, ‘Why aren’t you showing us pictures of all THIS?’

The answer is kind of fun! Sony overnighted their new Alpha 900 SLR to us. This camera is unreal and will blow photographers away. Just for starters, the camera is 24.6 mega pixels and shoots lighting fast! The Alpha 900 has not been released to the market yet, and I think we may be the first wedding photographers to ever shoot a wedding with it. Shooting the Cape Cod wedding with the 900 was so exciting. But the deal is we had to promise Sony we would not show any 900 images until the end of October (when the Alpha 900 releases to the market), so you’ll have to bear with us. Promise, it’s worth the wait! :)

For now, here are a few of our favorite shots taken with the Sony A700. These images are just a taste of how wonderful this wedding was! Notice the subtle blue hues. The color of blue in Cape Cod’s light is so different than the blue hues in the Pacific Northwest or Southern CA. It’s a soft, washed blue that is ever so subtle but in the light surrounding you.

The sun was setting when we took these shots, and I decided not to brighten them up in Photoshop because the low light lends to how intimate this couple was–how deeply they connected at the slightest touch of the other.

I don’t know if it makes sense, but can you see the undertones of the soft blue in these images? It’s so subtle, and yet it changed every thing for me and Brian.

Here is Brian’s favorite “blue hued” example. This one was photoshopped a bit. Brian caught me having fun on the dance floor with the guests. You would have put your dancing shoes on too if you heard the band they had! And yes, I can still take great pictures while dancing. :)

Congrats Christine and Patrick! We hope you have a wonderful honeymoon! It was a complete gift to document your wedding.

Brian is just digging himself a bigger and bigger hole if you ask me! Some would say that Brian is good at impersonating other people. When we were doing our video for Pictage, Brian started taking over the camera. He did this whole spill on Photo Coaching vs Photojournalism and then CHALLENGED Denis Reggie to a debate. Not with Brian, but with me (of course!). :)

For those of you who don’t know Denis Reggie, let’s just say he is like the Godfather of the wedding industry. He basically coined the term, Wedding Photojournalism, thirty plus years ago. He has shot the last 30 Kennedy weddings, and starts at $65K for wedding coverage. Yep, he starts there. Plus, Denis often turns bookings away b/c he is fully booked up! He is a legend! Denis has also helped put us on the map in several ways. If you haven’t heard him speak or been to one of his workshops, it’s a must! Changed our business overnight! But this video, wow! Enjoy!

For the record Denis, Brian’s meds had most likely worn off by the time we got to this point in the interview. ;)

Rachel or Andrew, what do you think? Was Brian’s impersonation anywhere close?

I wish he would have done his Mike Colon impersonation too! That one is freaking hilarious! Mike, I will make him show you the next time we see each other!

Last poll for the week! Should Brian be in front of the camera or behind the camera?

(I can’t stop laughing! I can’t wait to hear what you all say!!

Yesterday’s comments and feedback in regards to the post, A Woman’s Power During Uncertain Financial Times, were amazing. Thank you for all the beautiful things you shared from your own experiences to quotes to songs lyrics to your own fears and vulnerabilities. What a gift you each gave.

Today is a much more serious topic. :)

This touches on an ongoing topic in our house: Why Brian thinks he could win the People magazine award for Sexiest Man Alive. Before I get myself in trouble as his wife, he is totally the SEXIEST MAN ALIVE! I mean if you don’t think so, just check out my baby here! And Brian’s theory on why the world would agree is interesting to say the least.

Check out the video! The end is my favorite!

Cast your vote below by answering the question: Do you think Brian could win Sexiest Man Alive if he only had more exposure? :)

I know the video was really about a new term we’ve come up with called Photo Coaching. This was the topic of our talk at Partnercon, plus the upcoming WPPI conference in 2009. Pictage has asked us to spend some time on the forums tonight to follow up with any questions you might have from the talk, or questions you have for Brian about being the sexiest many alive!

If your a Pictage member, Brian and I will be on the Pictage forum live today from 4pm-6pm PST to answer as many questions as possible. Hope to see you there!

P.S. Last I looked, we only need 119 more votes to hit 500 for the Pet Photo Contest! If you haven’t voted, get over to this post and post your vote as a comment! If we hit 500 votes by MIDNIGHT TONIGHT PST, we are going to give some copies of Adobe’s Lightroom Software away to RANDOM VOTERS!! Don’t miss out! Get over there and vote, and you may win Adobe software!!

Personal Reflections07 Oct 2008 06:34 am

I’ve had something on my heart these last few days. This is a Personal Reflection post, and I would love to hear your thoughts. It’s a long one, as most Personal Reflection posts are. :)

______________________________________________

Fear is in the air these days. It seems to loom over us like a socked in fog. The financial world is in turmoil, everywhere you go you hear of another nightmare that may unfold…gas prices rising, cost of food rising, election craziness…home values continuing to drop…friends facing foreclosure, bankruptcy. The list goes on and on.

Where do we get our peace during these times? We can pray, but what else can we do? How can a woman still have power when she feels so powerless? As one friend said this week, “I’m pregnant and can’t help bring in anymore money then what I’m already doing. I feel powerless!”

I was making scrambled eggs on Saturday morning. At the last minute, after I dished up the kids their eggs, I decided to add spinach leaves and crumbled feta. As I stood in the kitchen, cooking up the eggs, I remembered another morning I had made the same breakfast. But it was at least eight years ago. Before babies, before photography. And the breakfast wasn’t for me and Brian, it was for eight other women coming over.

At the time, I had been a part of a small women’s group that was connected to the church we were attending. This church was located in a wealthy area and thus, it had a lot of wealthy people attending. Brian and I…hmmm…let’s just say we were the other extreme of wealthy. We had nothing to our names. ZIPPO!

We were new to the church, so I decided to join a small group. These eight women would come together every third Saturday and take turns having breakfast at each other’s homes. I remember going to some of their homes, and I couldn’t help but notice the fact that

A) they owned a home and we were renting a dive for $350 a month and

B) how nice their homes were!

You would have thought I would stress about my upcoming turn to make breakfast at my home (the place my dad refereed to as the Crack House, since that’s what it looked like on the outside).

You would have thought I was dreading my Saturday morning.

But here’s the thing. I wasn’t. I knew where Brian and I were at in life because I knew where we had come from.

Brian and I had come through five years of incredible pain and trauma in our marriage. We had nothing financially. People often wondered how so much bad could happen to one couple, especially since we’d only been married four years. When we hit the fourth year of marriage, all our other friends were buying their first homes. But it wasn’t time for us. We were managing an apartment complex and praying for a place with cheap rent so we could stop managing. We just wanted a place that was quiet and affordable. A place to call our own. This little $350 Crack House was the place we found, and I loved it. No rent to collect, toilets to unplug. Just us.

I remember standing at the stove that morning eight years ago. Any minute now the eight women would be showing up for breakfast. I put out my best tablecloth. A bought a bunch of tulips at the grocery store. I set out my special teacups and saucers with silver spoons. I was enjoyed every detail; a basket full of teas, baking homemade blueberry muffins, a fresh fruit salad and then my scrambled eggs with feta and spinach. With candles lit, I welcomed the women into my home–my dwelling place. And because I knew this place was a gift to us, in the time of life we were surviving, I couldn’t help but smile wide as I hosted these women.

When I remembered this breakfast, I was reminded of a truth that has helped me through many uncertain times. The truth being that I have the power to create something from nothing. I can take an ugly house and make it my own beautiful space. How? because beauty comes from within me. I know…so simple, yet for me, so profound….and so easy to lose sight of. Beauty doesn’t come from what I own, what I look like or don’t look like. None of the above. It simply comes from within–from my own deep wells of passion and imagination.

I want Pascaline to hear this story when she is older. I’m sure she will feel the pressure at some point to buy a home or buy a better this or better that as her peers have. But beautiful houses don’t equal an inviting home. And I believe wholeheartedly, that no matter how dire the circumstances, how little money there is for groceries or gas money, that there is something a woman cannot lose. She cannot lose her ability to create beauty from nothing. She cannot lose her imagination that makes the powerless powerful.

A woman can take a run down shack and make it the most inviting home anyone has ever been to. She can enrich people with her laughter, with her fragrant smells that creep out of the kitchen and tickle your nose. She can light a few candles, offer you coffee or tea and you feel like your being waited on as if you were a king or queen. A woman’s home is her magical refuge. She can open her door and invite you to take a break from the storm, and no matter how much money she has or doesn’t have, she can make her home a healing place.

In times like this, when everything is uncertain, remind yourself of the power you have to create, to make magic, to comfort and feed the soul of someone who has forgotten their own abilities. In times like this, if we have the strength, we must open our door and entertain a desperate soul who has forgotten her own power, her own beauty. Forget about picking the toys up. Forget about having an empty sink.

Even today, I had a woman over who is struggling. Her struggle is very deep. Her fears are incredibly valid. The financial market could change their lifestyle dramatically. I had toys everywhere, homeschool papers all over the table, and dishes from Saturday still in the sink. But I didn’t care because I knew her desperation felt far more dirty and uncomfortable than how she’d feel with my dirty dishes.

I lit some candles and made some tea. We let the kids play. I listened, asked questions and listened some more. My prayer was that she’d remember how power-full she is, despite how powerless the current times have us feeling.

My heart’s cry is that she would reconnect with that part of her that can create beauty, magic and laughter from nothing. This is something the financial state can never take from a woman. This is a power we will always possess.

Have you lost site of this power lately? Do you know others who have? What can you do to regain it?

Do you know where you are at in life? Where have you come from? Sometimes I answer these two questions to help me remember that where I am is exactly where I’m supposed to be.
